Abstract

At present, the ability to write scientifically becomes an important skill mastered by students. Students need to have good writing skills using reasoning and logic that focuses on what must be believed or done based on mechanisms, such as doing conceptual analysis and arguments for problem solving and decision making. The concept of semantic mapping is an effective strategy to improve student writing skills. This study explores the effectiveness of the concept of semantic mapping in the development of students' writing skills in essay writing. This study was classified into a quasi-experimental design. In this study the population is students of Universal Batam University who are registered in the 2018-2019 academic year. The instrument of this research is a writing test. Data were analyzed with several analyzes, namely normality testing, homogeneity testing, and hypothesis testing. In testing the research hypothesis, the researcher used the t-test for the related sample and the Wilcoxon test. Based on the analysis it was found that the average score of students in the pre test was 7.89 and the average score of the students in the post test was 12. T-score count is t = 3.83 and a significant standard of 0.05. While t table is only 2,306. Because t count is greater than t table (tobserved> t table), so the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted. So, based on these results, it was concluded that there was a statistical difference between the pre-test at the 0.05 level. This means that learning argumentative writing based on the theory of semantic mapping has a significant influence on students' argumentative writing skills.

Abstract

Translation was a very important role in the development of science and technology in Indonesia. It was due to the large number of printed and electronic sources written in foreign languages such as English, German, Spanish, and others. In translating a document, according to Catford's theory there were several shifts. This shift occurred because there was no truly similar language in this world. There was no language that was truly the same on this earth, so translating from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL) could not be exactly the same because the two languages were very different both in structure and cultural background. This study tried to determine the translation shift in the translated sports article from the Kompas Online Daily in December 2018. Data was analyzed through Catford's translation theory, namely structure shift, shift class, shift unit, and intra-system shift from Indonesian (as source language) into English (as the target language). The problem discussed in this study was the translation shift used in translating sports articles in Kompas Online Daily published in December 2018. This study used descriptive qualitative methods. Data was taken from articles translated through the Google translating machine. The method of data collection was done by meant of documentation, while the method of data analysis was done by categorization.

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the forms of hybridity as a result of the existence of postcolonial cultural contact with the construction of a colonial form. Researchers revealed the hybridity represented by the characters Parvez and Ali in My Son the Fanatic Short Story by Hanief Kureshi. This study used the Postcolonialism approach in the hybridity concept of Homi K Bhabha. According to. Bhabha (1994) Hybridity is a cross between two different cultures in a tangent interaction. In this case, hybridity is not only seen as a fusion of culture but also cultural products placed in social and historical space under postcolonialism which are part of the imposition of colonial power relations. The qualitative descriptive method was used in this study because of its essence in descriptive text analysis in predetermined literary works. The results of this study indicated that there are two forms of hybridity representation in this study. First, the character of mimicry in the sense of ambiguity and contradictory character as a discourse of cultural devotion due to the colonial construction that was formed. Mimicry is represented by the character Parvez in the story. Second, the ambivalence represented by his son named Ali. Ali was aware of the colonial discriminatory against culture so he resisted the construction but on the other hand, he did not know what identity he should hold.

Abstract

Ecolinguistics is an interdisciplinary study that looks at the link between ecology and linguistics. This study involves other studies, including sociology, anthropology, psychology, and political science. Socio-ecological aspects also greatly affect the maintenance, balance, and environmental inheritance of future generations. These local ecological wisdoms need to be included in a healthy and green environmental discourse (green speak). Knowledge about natural entities for millennial generation has begun to decrease due to the influence of digital technology which is very large. This can also lead to environmental damage and can also damage language by not understanding the cultural functions of the ecolexicon. The amount of Eco lexicon shifting ‘water’ causes millennial generation to no longer know the use of these words in Toba Batak culture. Changes in the lifestyle of the Toba Batak millennial generation have changed considerably and pay less attention to the natural cultural functions. The method used in this study is observation, interviews and qualitative descriptive. This study describes the fact that many natural ecolexics are not recognized anymore and even almost extinct in the Batak Toba community (rootlessness), some of which are mabakbak (flowing tears), bibis (flowing from a container fullness, lungkis (flowing smoothly) and then elaborated in the discussion.
