Abstract

Quantum chemical calculations using semi-empirical, ab initio, density functional theory (DFT) and Møller plesset (MP2) methods were performed on 4H-Cyclopenta[2,1-b,3;4-b’]dithiopene S-oxide derivatives (i.e. bridged dithiophene S-oxides, BTOs). The geometries, stabilities, electronic and thermodynamic properties of the compounds were studied. The thermodynamic parameters calculated at PM3 were in good agreement with those calculated at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. The band gap energies calculated at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level for the BTOs were lower than the un-substituted trithiophene but higher than 4H-Cyclopenta[2,1-b,3;4-b’]dithiopene. The absorption λmax calculated using TD-DFT was shifted to longer wavelength by successive replacement of methylene hydrogens of BTO by chlorine and fluorine atoms.

Abstract

ɑ-Mangostin (1), β-mangostin (2) and gartanin (3) have been isolated from the trunk latex of Garcinia mangostana Linn. and investigated for their antimicrobial activities against Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Micrococcus luteus, Salmonella typhosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus mutans and Vibrio cholerae. The significant antibacterial activity showed by α-mangostin (1) against Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis. Staphylococcus epidermidis and Vibrio cholerae, but all compounds showed no activity to inhibit the growth of Micrococcus luteus and Streptococcus mutans.

Abstract

The modification of cellulose with 2-mercaptobenzhotiazole (MBT) through grafting and impregnating methods has been done. Modified cellulose used as adsorbent for Cu(II) ion in aqueous solution. The aims of research were modification cellulose with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane and 2-mercaptobenzhotiazole (MBT), characterization of the modified cellulose with FTIR, SEM and XRD and adsorption study between cellulose-MBT adsorbent with Cu(II) ion in aqueous solution. The adsorbent of cellulose-MBT was synthesized by reflux process. Adsorption study between cellulose-MBT adsorbent with Cu(II) ion was investigated based on influence of pH solution, interaction time and initial concentration of Cu(II) ion. The result showed that activated cellulose can be modified with MBT to become cellulose-MBT adsorbent. The functional group of –C=N appeared at wavenumber 1658 cm-1 attributed to functional group of -C=N- is Schiff base of MBT. Presence functional group of S-H at cellulose-MBT adsorbent was not detected. The surface morphology of cellulose-MBT adsorbent after being interacted with Cu(II) ion was different before being interacted with Cu(II) ion. The diffractogram of cellulose-MBT adsorbent has similarity with cellulose-MBT adsorbent-Cu(II) ion. The optimum adsorption of Cu(II) ion was observed at pH 7.0 and 150 min of interaction time. Percentage of Cu(II) ion was absorbed by cellulose-MBT adsorbent tended to be constant after Cu(II) ion concentration 100 ppm.

Abstract

Starch is a renewable natural polymer that can be decomposed easily in the environment and can be modified to various applications such as biomedical, agricultural and pharmaceutical applications. Copolymerization of gelatinized starch–CM-chitosan and acrylic acid (AAc) in aqueous medium using γ-irradiation was carried out. The preparation conditions, such as irradiation dose and AAc concentration were investigated. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that by increasing of irradiation dose the gel fraction increases till the dose of 15 kGy. Above the stating dose the gel fraction decreases. The Equilibrium Degree of Swelling (EDS) value slightly increases with increasing irradiation dose and after dose of 15 kGy is decreasing. The swelling of starch–CM-chitosan–AAc hydro gels reduced as the gel content increases. The results indicated that the optimum condition for obtaining hydro gels with desirable properties was irradiated at dose of 15 kGy. The results indicated that SEM revealed that the higher the dose, the lower the copolymer pore size. The starch–CM-chitosan–AAc copolymers have thermal stability higher than that for starch individually.

Abstract

Aluminium chloride immobilized on mesoporous aluminosilicate was investigated as catalysts in the condensation of isatin with indole. AlCl3/mesoporous aluminosilicate (AlCl3/AM) catalysts were prepared by impregnation of 1, 5, 10 and 15 wt% AlCl3 on the surface of mesoporous aluminosilicate. A maximum conversion of isatin was achieved using 15% AlCl3/AM catalyst whereas the highest selectivity of 68.97% towards trisindoline was obtained using pure AM. The activity of the catalysts was depended on their acid site number and surface area. The number of Brønsted acid and the surface area affected to the conversion of isatin while the total acidity and the number of Lewis acid influenced the selectivity.

Abstract

The current investigation reports an effective adsorption of both anionic species and cationic dyes on Mg/Al hydrotalcite-like compounds (Mg/Al HTlc) synthetic from brine water, as novel, inexpensive available alternative to the commercial hydrotalcite. The feasibility of the Mg/Al HTlc, for the adsorptive removal of both anionic (Eosin Yellow-EY and Methyl Orange-MO) and cationic (Methylene blue-MB) dyes from aqueous solution was evaluated in a batch process. Dyes adsorption process was thoroughly studied from both kinetic and equilibrium points of view for all adsorbents. The adsorption kinetics was tested for the pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic models at different experimental conditions. The dyes adsorption follows the pseudo-second order kinetics model, with correlation coefficients close to unity when experimental data were fitted in the model. The experimental isotherm data were analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results from Langmuir isotherm indicated that the capacity of Mg/Al HTlc for the adsorption of anionic dyes was higher than that for cationic dyes.

Abstract

Guaiacol, a phenolic compound is known as an anticancer. Dimerization of guaiacol has been done by biotransformation using peroxidase enzyme as biocatalyst. This enzyme was isolated from Indonesian plant, kailan (Brassica oleraceae var. alboglabra). Analysis of dimerization product was carried out by TLC, IR, LC-MS, and NMR. Whilst analysis of in-vitro cytotoxic activity was carried out by MTT method against breast cancer T47D and MCF7 cells. The result showed that the dimerization reaction gave O-para dehydroguaiacol. The in-vitro cytotoxic activity analysis showed that O-para dehydroguaiacol compound has potency as anti-breast cancer.

Abstract

In this study, we cloned and sequenced cDNA encoding the chicken p46 polypeptide, RbAp46. The cDNA encoding a protein consists of 424 amino acids is a member of the WD protein family, with seven WD repeat motifs, and exhibits 90.3% identity to RbAp48, and 94.3% identity to the human RbAp46. The RbAp46 fusion protein were synthesized by in vitro translation system and in Escherichia coli under induction by 50 µM IPTG and single step purified with glutathione-Agarose beads, showed that GST-tagged protein of approximately 72 kDa. The in vitro experiment established that RbAp46 interacts with chicken histones, chHDAC-1, and chHAT-1. The in vitro immunoprecipitation experiment, involving truncated mutants of RbAp46, revealed not only that two regions comprising amino acids 33-179 and 375-404 are necessary for its binding to H2B, but also that two regions comprising amino acids 1-32 and 405-424 are necessary for its binding to H4. Furthermore, the GST pulldown affinity assay, involving truncated mutants of RbAp46, revealed that a region comprising amino acids 359-404 binds to chHAT-1 in vitro. Taken together, these results indicate not only that RbAp46 should participate differentially in a number of DNA-utilizing processes through interactions of its distinct regions with histones and chHAT-1, but also that the proper propeller structure of RbAp46 is not necessary for its interaction with chHAT-1.

Abstract

PCR-RFLP technique to detect porcine contamination in chicken nugget has been developed and validated in this research. Various concentrations of pork were fortified during preparation of the nugget. DNA was then isolated from the nugget followed by PCR employed primers which targeted a 359 bp cytB gene fragment of mitochondrial DNA. For RFLP, the PCR product was digested by means of BamHI and BseDI enzymes. Cutting DNA fragments from nugget containing pork using BseDI enzyme produced DNA fragment with size 228 and 131 bp, while cutting with BamHI enzyme produce DNA fragments with sizes 244 and 115 bp. All of these fragments were not present in RFLP analysis of pork-free nugget. The method shows good specificity and precision and could detect porcine contamination in the nugget up to 5%. The method has been applied to test commercial nugget. Four brand of Halal-labeled commercial nugget as well as four brand of non labeled one gave negative porcine contamination.

Abstract

An interesting natural product chemistry aspect of Fragraea fragrans is that their fruits are richness with ursolic acid and its isomer oleanolic acid (3.05% of dried powder). As our continuous work on these inseparable structural isomeric triterpenes, this paper reports that 51.0% of inseparable 3-oxo-ursolic[3-oxo-oleanolic] acids and 48.6% of inseparable 3-acethyl-ursolic [3-acethyl-oleanolic] acids have already been made from those triterpenes as starting materials of the oxidized and acetylated compounds and evaluated their activity against P388 leukemia cells. The activity of 3-oxo-ursolic [3-oxo-oleanolic] acids with IC50 = 18.6 µg/mL exhibited three-fold more potent against P388 leukemia cell proliferations compared to ursolic [oleanolic] acids with IC50 = 53.5 µg/mL; while the 3-acethyl-ursolic [3-acethyl-oleanolic] acids with IC50 = 37.9 µg/mL showed two-fold more potent then their parent triterpenes (IC50 = 53.5 µg/mL) in the inhibition of P388 leukemia cell growth.
