Abstract

This study investigated the development, characteristics, and effectiveness of a 4C-based Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) assessment in enhancing sixth-grade students’ critical thinking abilities in mathematics learning at elementary schools in Kudus. Specifically, the objectives were: (1) to formulate a 4C-based HOTS assessment design aimed at improving students’ critical thinking skills; (2) to describe the defining characteristics of the developed 4C-based HOTS assessment; and (3) to analyze its effectiveness in improving students’ critical thinking abilities. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach by adapting the Borg and Gall development model, which consists of ten systematic stages. The field trial involved 73 sixth-grade students, comprising 37 students from SD 1 and SD 2 Gribig as the experimental group and 36 students from SD 1 and SD 3 Klumpit as the control group. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, tests, and interviews. To determine effectiveness, data were analyzed using gain score analysis and t-tests at a significance level of 0.05. The results indicated that the developed HOTS assessment based on the 4C framework possessed seven main characteristics: (1) measuring higher-order thinking skills, (2) promoting divergent thinking, (3) utilizing multiple representations, (4) incorporating contextual and problem-based situations, (5) applying varied questioning techniques, (6) assessing communication skills, and (7) evaluating collaboration skills. Statistical analysis demonstrated that the 4C-based HOTS assessment was effective in improving students’ critical thinking abilities and learning outcomes. This was evidenced by an increase in the average critical thinking score of the experimental group to 80.59, categorized as moderate, and an increase in the average learning outcome score to 89.05, also within the moderate category. In conclusion, the implementation of a 4C-based HOTS assessment significantly enhanced sixth-grade students’ critical thinking abilities in mathematics learning at elementary schools in Kudus, thereby supporting the integration of 21st-century skills within assessment practices.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the significant effect of Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students at SMK Dar El Hikmah Pekanbaru. This research was pre-experimental with one group pre-test post-test design. The population of this research was the second year students of SMK Dar El Hikmah Pekanbaru. All of the population were taken as the samples selected by using total sampling technique. This research administered a reading test consisting of 40 multiple-choice items in the pre-test and post-test. The mean score in pre-test was 60.15, while the mean score in post-test was 74.97. To determine the difference between pre-test and post-test, this research used t-test formula. After analyzing the data, it was found that the t-test score was 8.782, meaning that it was higher than t-table (2.034). From the result of data analysis, it was concluded that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) of this research was accepted. Thus, Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy significantly improved the reading comprehension of the second year students at SMK Dar El Hikmah Pekanbaru. Based on these findings, it was recommended that Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy was effective on improving the students’ reading comprehension, particularly in narrative text.

Abstract

This study aimed to implement models and learning tools based on an integrated JAS (Natural Surrounding Exploration) approach in the plant taxonomy course, particularly on plant determination material. This research was conducted by utilizing a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The research was carried out from September to November 2019 in the odd semester of the 2019/2020 academic year. The samples were chosen using a purposive sampling technique. The samples consisted of 43 students from the Biology Education Study Program at Universitas Flores who took the plant taxonomy course. The research was conducted at Kelimutu National Park. Based on the results, the use of a taxonomic learning model based on natural surrounding exploration was considered quite interesting and encouraged meaningful teaching and learning activities. In addition, based on the results of interviews with biology students, this method provided several advantages, including (1) being able to increase students’ understanding of plant identification, (2) serving as an attractive medium to trigger learning motivation because it was related to the real context around it, and (3) instilling a caring attitude and love for the surrounding natural wealth and local culture.
