Abstract

Student Worksheet (LKS) is a learning media as a means to train the students to think, act and having an attitude like a young scientist. The purpose of the particular study was to produce a character-based LKS of Science with inquiry model and analyzing the development of the LKS on students’ achievement and character. This research was a developmental research. The research sample was the students of class IXa as the experimental class and students of class IXd as the control class. The sampling technique used purposive sampling. Research procedures were; introduction, design, and development. Data collection techniques were the questionnaire, test, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used the percentage, t-test, and gain test. The results of the analysis concluded that the character-based Students Worksheets with inquiry model was very feasible to be used as a learning guide for a science subject. There is a significant difference in learning achievement between students in the experimental class and students in the control class.

Abstract

The study was conducted to develop science module based on project-based learning that is feasible to be implemented in science learning and has potency to build critical thinking skills of junior high school students. The study was Research and Development (RnD), modified from Borg and Gall steps covering only research and information collecting, planning, preliminary form of product development, expert judgment, product revision, and final product. The subjects were 2 expert lecturers (content expert and media expert) and 2 science teachers of SMP N 1 Wonosari. The types of data were quantitative and qualitative. Data were collected by means of SSP validation sheets and disaster preparedness identification sheets. The techniques of data analysis were descriptive analysis of qualitative and quantitative to 5 grading scale. The result of the study shows that science module is feasible to be implemented in science learning and has potency to build critical thinking skills of junior high school students.

Abstract

Junior high school students find it difficult to understand the materials and the concepts in science learning because the teaching method that is too monotonous. It is the lecturing method where students are less involved in learning activities, and this has led to the decline in students’ learning outcomes in science learning. The use of media and learning models play an important role. The popular media in learning are modern media, in this case PhET application. This application can give the impression of a direct experiment among students without ignoring technological developments where IT is needed by students. This study aims to identify students' conceptions on concepts. The type of this research was a library research. This study used the VAK learning model (Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic). In the VAK learning model, the teacher can combine three teaching-learning styles. 1) The teacher will prioritize the demonstration or the media by showing the teaching tools directly to the students and describing them on the board. 2) In learning by listening, the teacher must be able to explain clearly and in detail so that the students can understand the material presented. 3) In learning practice, after the students listen and learn through physical activity and direct involvement, they must conduct a direct experiment to gain deeper understanding of the materials. In this library research, the researchers searched for some references related to the research.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the concept mastery of students on optics through the development of a virtual laboratory. This research and development consisted of three stages, namely the preliminary study, the design of the virtual laboratory, and the virtual laboratory testing/implementation. The validity of the virtual laboratory is based on the results of the expert validation on the aspects of suitability of the contents and construction. The study used mixed-methods with exploratory sequential design in the form of Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The samples were taken using purposive sampling technique. This study involved 25 students of class VIII 1 as the experimental group and 25 students of class VIII 3 as the control group at Pugung Junior High School 1. The data were collected using observation, questionnaires and tests, and interviews. Then the data were analyzed using independent sample t-test and homogeneity test to see the learning effectiveness of the two sample groups. The results show that the practicality of learning using the developed virtual laboratory has been very successful and received good responses from the students. The effectiveness of the virtual laboratory can be seen from the N-gain of 0.44 (moderate level). Therefore, virtual laboratories can be used as teaching tools that are able to contribute positively to increase students’ learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of teaching using the inductive and deductive strategies on the improvement of learning achievement and motivation students. This study was a quasi-experimental study, involved all students of class IX of SMPN 2 Sentolo, Kulonprogo in the academic year of 2010/2011. Sample was established using the purposive sampling technique, two science classes each of 32 students were taught using the inductive and deductive strategy. The data were gathered  using a pretest and posttest. The students’ achievement was measured using a multiple choice test and their motivation were measured using a questionnaire and observation sheets. The results show that: (1) there is a difference of science instruction through deductive and inductive strategies on improving learning achievement, which is supported by Independent Samples Test in the t-test column for Equality of Means, score value of sig. (2 tailed) is 0,026; (2) there is no differences of deductive and inductive strategies on improving students’ motivation, which is supported by t-test column for Equality of Means, score value of sig. (2 tailed) is 0,153; (3) there is a significant correlation of motivation on learning science and science achievement, which is shown by the value of coefficient of correlation 0,736.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of Modified Free Inquiry approach on student’s process skill, and student science attitudes. This Quasi-Experimental study used pretest-posttest with nonequivalent control group design with grade XI student’s of MAN Maguwoharjo Yogyakarta in the second semester of academic year 2012/2013 as a population, and used 2 classes of XI Science Programs as a sample group. This approach is implemented on biology learning through human sense system matters. Learning in this study lasted for 6 times meetings for each group of samples, and the data were obtained by data collection instruments in the forms of a written multiple choice test for science process skill, observation sheets for scientific process skills and science attitudes, and a questionnaire for science attitudes which was administered before and after learning. The data were processed with IBM SPSS 20 software for windows, and hypothesis testing was done through multivariate analysis. The results of the study show a significant value of 0.000, which mean there are significant effect of Modified Free Inquiry approach on: (1) Student’s science process skill, and (2) science attitudes, if it’s compared with Guided Inquiry approach.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop problems-based computer-assisted instruction in biology learning on waste material and its effectiveness on the ability of learners to solve the problem. This research was adapted from the model of development that includes ADDIE analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate. Test subjects in this study were the students of grade X at SMA Negeri 1 Magelang. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and test of problem-solving skills. The results showed that computer-assisted instruction effectively used to practice problem-solving. This was seen in the mode and the mean on experimental class higher than the control class. It was also seen at Anacova test followed by t-test at the 0.05 significance level result that media used in the experimental class were able to show better achievement than traditional learning in control class.

Abstract

The research aimed to1) find out the expedience of physics Subject-Specific Pedagogy (SSP) based on the problem solving, and 2) improve the science process skills and problem-solving ability of grade X students of SMA N 7 Yogyakarta in electricity subject using the physics SSP based on the problem-solving. The particular research was a research and development using the 4-D development model consisting of 1) define, 2) design, 3) development, and 4) dissemination. The developed SSP was tested in a limited and extensive field trial. The sample of the limited field trial was 15 students, while in the extensive field trial consisted of 30 students in the control class and 29 students in the experimental class. The statistical analysis used multivariate analysis. The results were 1) The developed SSP, in terms of the syllabus, Lesson Plan, and worksheet, was in the excellent category, while the science process skills instrument test, problem-solving instrument test, and the textbook were in a good category, 2) The implementation of SSP for physics learning based on a problem solving had significant effect on improving the students science process skills and problem solving ability. The result of the multivariate test showed a significantly different effect between students that learn using the physics SSP based on the problem solving and students learn using the physics SSP based on the conventional model.
