Abstract

Selecting the proper textbook to be used during the teaching-learning process is a quite complicated process. The selection process is taken not only by teachers but also by other possible people, for instance the government or the curriculum committee of the education institution. Therefore, whoever finalize the decision on choosing the textbook, then its selection process must acquire the fit or the balance correlation between the textbooks and these three factors: the students, the teachers, and the curriculum. In this paper, the author will focus on describing the important correlation between these three factors with the textbook during the textbook selection process. Shortly, this descriptive qualitative analysis summary article may also help the teachers or the educators, especially, to give full attention to these factors to select the perfect textbooks to be used as the sources during the teaching-learning processes. In addition, it is also hoped that the students will be eased and have a better understanding of the lesson material and the source of information when the teachers succeed in selecting the textbooks by keeping these three factors in mind.Selecting the proper textbook to be used during the teaching-learning process is a quite complicated process. Abstract

The Covid-19 Pandemic affects all sectors in every side of the world. The education side is also becoming one of the most affected areas due to this situation. Indonesia"™s government made a regulation for conducting distance learning almost in the past two years. By creating this regulation, they also made a module for the teachers and students with the aim of facilitating the education field so it could achieve the materials planned in the general syllabus of Indonesia"™s curriculum even though they have to do distance learning. The cultural content is usually found in the English module or textbooks. Culture as one of the national identities should be taught to the students as young as they are. There are three categories of cultural content as follows: source culture, target culture, and international target culture. The descriptive qualitative method will be used in this study since it is aimed to classify and evaluate the cultural content found in the English module used by the 9th grade students in Indonesia and discuss the most appropriate culture that should be taught to junior high school students when it comes to the education in the digital age. The findings of this study show that most cultural categories occurred is from the target culture that is the US and UK culture followed by the source culture. Then, the most cultural elements found in the English module are in a form of product, person, and practice in a line. There is no perspective element found in this study. Since the aim of learning by using this module is for mastering the target language (English), it is acceptable when the target culture is easier to find compared to the source or international target culture. The need of module evaluation here hopefully can help the teachers to select the appropriate sources for the teaching and learning materials in the English classroom, especially in junior high school.

Abstract

This study investigates the problem of student English reading in the Senior High School of SMAS AMKUR Sungai Pinyuh in terms of types of material, reading tasks, and cognitive level of reading tasks. The participant of this study consists of 23 students of grade X Social Studies. The researchers used descriptive qualitative research to develop the material in teaching reading, especially for English subjects. Not only for the texts, vocabulary, and the information but also to build students"™ critical thinking in reading comprehension. The book used as the instrument is Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X Edisi Revisi 2017 published by Pusat Kurikulum dan Perbukuan, Balitbang, Kemendikbud. The findings based on the teacher"™s observation from the students showed that some texts are too long and most of the time the readers do not suitable to the local contexts, the text used unfamiliar words to the students, and the books do not provide the list of vocabularies, used direct information to the answers of the questions after reading the text. Based on the research findings, the recommendation to improve students' reading comprehension is that the teacher needs to be more selective to know that the material is suitable for the students.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to use Bloom's revised taxonomy to analyze the context of the grammar activities in Wider World 2 Student"™s Book. To achieve the research goal, a content analysis was performed. The researcher analyzed the textbook based on Bloom's revised taxonomy. According to the data, the textbook has dominant grammar activities, particularly on the cognitive process of "understand" and "remember" with 47% and 32% out of 189 grammar activities. Moreover, the data shows that the grammar activities in the textbook have an uneven distribution of higher and lower cognitive processes. There is a vast lower thinking skills percentage since most grammar activities focus on the "understand" aspect. While the second dominant aspect is "remember" which includes lower thinking skills. Therefore, Wider World 2 Students"™ Book highlights Bloom"™s revised taxonomy"™s lower cognitive thinking process, represented by the "understand" and "remember" thinking processes.
