Abstract

In the world of globalisation advancement, the role of the English language is greatly accentuated in the Malaysian education system. The capability to speak English is a prevailing tool in getting all offered fields a success. Despite the formal learning of English over years at school, Malaysian learners are still unable to achieve a desirable competency level of English proficiency. The current situation of the Malaysian ESL school learners imposed a great obstacle which affects them tremendously by being incompetent in communicating English. Very limited research has been done to address the speaking problems among Sabah’s community college ESL learners. Ideally, the usage of authentic materials should help learners to speak. This study attempts to reduce this gap by embarking on the intervention to use authentic materials for teachers to teach speaking skills. This study is going to apply a mixed-method approach and quasi-experimental design. Experimental group students will be receiving an authentic materials module for 14-weeks, while control group students will be receiving traditional method teaching. A pre-test and post-test will be conducted to identify that there’s no significant difference in the mean score between the two groups of participants before and after the intervention. It is hoped that the results of this study would contribute to improving the speaking skill among Community College students.

Abstract

Reading is one of the basic skills in English. Reading is a receptive skill which allows students to acquire a wide range of literacy (Tuhumury & Nikijuluw, 2020). Thus, we need to pay more attention on how to have successful teaching reading especially for young learners. Teaching reading by utilizing phonics instruction has been proven to improve student’s reading skill. This present study is aimed at exploring the application of phonics instruction for teaching reading to young learners in order to get a better understanding of the effectiveness of utilizing phonics for reading to young learners. Three videos of teaching by teacher Jady were chosen to be the data source of this study. The findings showed that there were several stages that were used by teacher Jady in order to have successful phonics instruction to teaching reading to young learners. The stages are introducing letter sounds, teaching blending two sounds which consist of Consonant-Vowel and teaching blending three sounds which consist of Consonant-Vowel-Consonant.

Abstract

Teaching speaking for English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) students in an English-for-Specific-Purposes (ESP) classroom is a demanding process. Despite the efforts of the Vietnamese government and educators, many Vietnamese EFL students perceive speaking as one of the most challenging language skills, and their speaking abilities in real-life situations are insufficient to fulfill society's increasing demands. As a result, it is the role of language teachers to identify students’ difficulties in speaking English and help them enhance their language speaking skills. This paper aims to explore the English speaking problems faced by ESP Vietnamese learners at the University of Foreign Language Studies, University of Danang (UFLS-UD), Vietnam . A questionnaire was employed to collect data from first-year undergraduate students in the ESP Department at UFLS-UD. Besides, the study also proposed a scaffolding model named "Diagnosing, Modeling and Sharing, Guiding, Applying" (DMGA) as a practical suggestion for EFL teachers for speaking training. It is hoped that the findings of the study will benefit both Vietnamese education policy makers, teachers as well as students in terms of teaching and learning speaking skills in ESP settings within an EFL context.

Abstract

The technological revolution, globalization, and the increasing exposure to different cultural communication, English language teaching (ELT) have led to several reforms in the Chinese higher education system. Meanwhile, English for specific purposes (ESP) has also gained an extraordinary attention resulting in comprehensive developments of ELT in China. However, business English (BE), which is one of the disciplines of ESP, is considered challenging for Chinese EFL learners in higher education. Additionally, mastering a fluent English-speaking skill is extremely difficult for those learners compared with the other language skills (i.e., listening, reading, and writing). Accordingly, a growing need emerges for a curriculum development to improve the Chinese ESP learners’ speaking proficiency particularly in business-related areas. Therefore, this paper aims at bridging the gap between theory and practice by proposing a conceptual framework that integrates the approach of content-based instruction (CBI) and Thornbury’s 3As model (awareness, appropriation, and autonomy) into developing a localized teaching module to enhance the speaking proficiency among Chinese EFL learners of BE major in higher education. Adopting an explanatory mixed-method research design, this study will employ a quasi-experimental design with a purposive sampling where students from two classes of BE major from a private university in China will be involved in the study. A CB3As Speaking Teaching Module for a 14-week intervention will be implemented for the experimental group, while a traditional method will be used with the control group. Pre-test and post-test will be conducted to identify whether there is any significant difference in the mean score of the pre-test and post-test given to the two groups before and after the intervention. It is hoped that the results of this study would contribute to improving the speaking skill among Chinese EFL learners.

Abstract

Traditional arts and culture, as a part of national identity, can be both purpose and means of teaching and learning English, especially for visual art students in higher education. This study captures how traditional arts are brought into English classrooms at Indonesian Institute of Arts Surakarta. Data are collected through observation, interview, and group discussion, and are analyzed qualitatively, by the techniques of data organizing, coding, interpreting, displaying and concluding. The findings show that Indonesian traditional arts are included in the topics of materials, classroom tasks, and assignments of English teaching and learning. However, the implementation is adjusted following each major or study program. Generally, the forms of arts are related to traditional culture products, either artifacts or non-artifact, such as Batik (including the making process and the ornaments), Keris, and Cultural Activities. Such incorporation of art and language leads to the communicative atmosphere of art creation and appreciation.

Abstract

This study aimed to expose English language teaching practices and policies in Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative approach in the form of document analysis. Analyses were conducted on books, research papers, national policies, and curricular documents. From the inaugural curriculum in 1947 to the present curriculum in 2013, the Indonesian government has provided financing for English language teaching. In contrast, the 2013 curriculum gives less time to the teaching of the English language than earlier editions. From the perspective of training all Indonesians to become global citizens, language proficiency is required. Therefore, both teachers and students must have language competency. However, English language teaching as the main lesson at primary school levels is no longer compatible with current Indonesian educational policy. Hence, English is supposed to be taught in all school level with the goal of fostering global citizens with language proficiency, since being a global citizen in the age of globalization is inevitable.

Abstract

Education has become a part of human life. It is given to individuals differently depending on where the educational activities take place. In order to maintain the consistency of education in certain areas, there is a need for a curriculum that defines the materials and learning standards that must be taught and achieved in educational institutions based on the customs of each area around the world. One method of curriculum implementation is through textbooks. They are tools in which curriculum materials and standards are implemented to support teaching and learning activities. Textbooks always have problems with the content related to the implemented curriculum. There is a need for evaluation to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of textbooks. This study examines the existing implemented curriculum with the textbook contents. Two textbooks, "Bahasa Inggris" based on Indonesian Curriculum 2013 and "Developing English Competences" based on Indonesian KTSP 2006 curriculum, are used for assessment and evaluation. Qualitative method called document analysis is used by implementing McGrath's theory to evaluate textbooks. The results are the difference and validity between the textbooks contents and both the 2013 and 2006 KTSP curriculum. Both are considered suitable, but with some difficulties in certain degrees in teaching and learning activities.

Abstract

The development of technology has brought significant impacts on education. This creates much potential for the teaching and learning of English as a second language. With the great capability of the internet, educators can design powerful materials for efficient and effective learning. Mobile-assisted Language Learning (MALL) has become one of the popular research areas on technology in education in recent years for its advantages of flexibility of time and place. However, much only focus on a single application or platform implementation for the learning. This proposed study intends to integrate multiple internet-based platforms to support ESL learning. It aims to develop attractive and interactive learning materials that utilize Mobile-assisted Language Learning. This research uses the ADDIE method in developing the materials. To evaluate the materials, Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) will be adopted to investigate the participants"™ perceptions of their experience of using the MALL materials. The participants of the study will be 7th-grade students of SMPN 4 Satap Sejangkung. These materials are planned to be a product that can make use of the advantages of mobile devices, in this case, flexibility and usability.
