Students, particularly in senior high school often state that they like instructors who employ active learning strategies to get students engaged with the class topic. Sometimes, large teaching classes are difficult to get students to participate in classroom activities and assess whether they are truly learning or not. It is why providing a game is an appropriate way to create a fun and interactive engagement for students to learn and comprehend the information. “The value of games as a vehicle for teaching concepts while inspiring students is now well accepted at almost all levels of education” Becker  (2001). Kahoot is known as a technology-based instructional tool, it is a popular eLearning tool that easily can be used to add vitality, student engagement, and meta-cognitive supports with limited instructor or student training required. This study aims to analyze the use of Kahoot in engaging students’ active response in learning English. This is a classroom action research. Descriptive analysis is conducted to gain the students action and response during teaching and learning processes proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart in Hopkins (2008). The subjects of this study are twelve grade students of SMAN 1 Serawai, Kabupaten Sintang.

Abstract

AbstractTo face the global era, students in the twenty-first century must master the English language confidently and critically. One of the techniques for improving students' English language abilities is digital literacy. This research will look at how digital literacy is implemented to improve students' ability to master the English language and what challenges learners face when participating in these activities for elementary school students. It is an analysis based on the cultural characteristics of the western and eastern countries. The research methodology was content analysis. The writer gathered information by reading articles about the use of digital literacy in learning English. The findings verified some facts, such as the notion that using digital literacy in the classroom increases primary pupils' motivation for learning English. It also encourages students to learn new languages. Second, some children continue to have difficulty with digital literacy. Not to mention, some schools do not provide enough tools for students to apply digital literacy, which has an impact on classroom teaching and learning. However, further research on providing appropriate digital literacy based on kids' age or level of learning is required. Keywords: Eastern and Western countries, digital literacy, English language learning, young learner

Abstract

Literature review related to reading comprehension among English as Foreign Language (EFL) Chinese learners shows that the EFL undergraduates have serious issues in critical reading and lack training on critical reading. Limited research has been carried out as to training this high-level reading ability among Chinese EFL learners. Mastering critical reading ability of analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating the text is necessary to achieve deep comprehension among EFL undergraduates who aspire to learn and be proficient in other languages. Relevant literature suggests that production-oriented activities can provide more opportunities for learners to participate in reading. Due to the lack of relevant research on how to incorporate production-oriented task more effectively into critical reading activities, this empirical study aims to develop a Production-Oriented Critical Reading Model (POCReM) to improve the critical reading ability (CRA) among EFL non-English major Chinese undergraduates (sophomores) at a public university in China. Using an explanatory mixed method design, the study will survey the critical reading difficulties among non-English major sophomores before the start of the 12-week POCReM treatment. A pre-test and post-test will be conducted to examine whether there are any statistically significant differences in the participants’ performance results before and after the treatment. A semi-structured interview will also be carried out to elicit the participants’ perceptions towards the POCReM intervention. Both qualitative and quantitative data will be examined and analyzed accordingly.

Abstract

Producing effective and quality academic writing such as argumentative writing requires more than the regular writing ability, but rather analytical writing which would increase argumentation skills, and analytical thinking and promote higher cognitive skills. This study is conducted in response to a problem that exists within the Malaysian education setting where students have difficulties in presenting and expanding ideas of viewpoints convincingly, lack of knowledge of the subject matter, and insufficient linguistic competence. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the effect of analytic text-based writing strategies on the students’ argumentative performance by proposing a conceptual framework that integrates the approach of text-based instruction and the writing model by Hyland (2003) that emphasizes the genre approach of teaching writing. This study will employ a mixed-method research approach and a quasi-experimental research design with a purposive sampling where two groups of Form-Six students will be involved in the study. The experimental group will be assigned to carry out a 12-week intervention program and the control group with regular classroom practices. Pre-test and post-test will be conducted on both groups before and after the intervention. These features of analytic text-based writing which largely focuses on reading and writing skills would be expected to bring a great improvement in the writing performance among Malaysian ESL learners in Sabah.
