Abstract

The research provides an overview and an analytical study of the story of Joseph. The subject of the study is a book written by an obscure scholar of Andalusia, belonging to the tribe of Aws, nicknamed Sirāj al-Dīn, who hails from Murcia, one of the cities of Andalusia. The author titled his book: Zahr al-Kamām fī Qiṣat Yūsuf ʻAlayhi al-Salām. The book has literary, linguistic and missionary value, so the study selected it for analysis. The printed copy in our hands was based on a single handwritten copy, and the editor made a commendable effort in editing it. It was found that the book had many handwritten copies, which the study reviewed, and the necessity of re-editing the book by referring to and benefiting from it was called for. We also did not find a study highlighting the importance of this book. However, the story of Joseph in the past and present is vast, including books and literary works written in Arabic and other Islamic languages. The story of Joseph was reflected in the instinctive talent of Arab poets, who referred to it in their poems. The study focuses on three critical issues in the story: Educational lessons and strengthening our connection with Allah, lessons in management and economics, and social lessons. The study also focuses on the book itself and the author’s methodology in drafting it, whereby the book was divided into seventeen chapters, each of which began with verses from the Qurʼan according to a specific style to emphasize four basic themes to strengthen the meanings of Islam and faith among Muslims. He presented the story of Joseph and the lessons learned from it through these themes. The study adopts the analytical methodology in studying the book by focusing on two fundamental dimensions: the missionary dimension represented by the author through numerical divisions and the linguistic dimension through numerical divisions. The study presents its viewpoint on two prominent areas of the book: The poems mentioned in it, as well as the narrations stated in it, and the opinions of scholars regarding the permissibility of narrating traditions from the Israelites. The study concludes by presenting an appendix related to the effort achieved by the author concerning the poetic quotations included in the book, which numbers 1578 verses of poetry aimed at reinforcing the concepts that the author focused on in his book. The essential results of the study are mentioned in the appropriate sections.

Abstract

Students often use Google Translate to translate unknown “educational terms”. However, Google Translate is often inaccurate. This study aims to develop an android-based educational terms dictionary application (Mu’jam al-Musṭalahāt al-Tarbawiyah) as an independent learning resource for PTKIN students, to determine its quality, and to determine students’ responses to the dictionary. This study is a development research with a procedural model. The development procedure in this study refers to the development research procedure by Timpus Litjaknov with development steps, namely analysis of the product to be developed, initial product development, expert validation and revision, small-scale field trials and product revisions, large-scale field trials, and the final product. The data analysis techniques used are quantitative and qualitative data. The results of this research are: 1) The Android-based Mu'jam al-Musṭalahāt al-Tarbawiyah dictionary has been successfully developed as an independent learning resource for students of state Islamic universities with the name of a trilingual educational terms dictionary, 2) Based on the assessment of media experts, the Mu'jam al-Musalahāt al-Tarbawiyah dictionary has very good quality with an average score of 3.50 and based on the media expert's assessment it is 3.50, 3) student response to the application The Mu'jam al-Musṭalahāt al-Tarbawiyah dictionary in small-scale field trials obtained an average score of 3.02, while in large-scale field trials it obtained an average score of 3.30.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the development of an e-book for learning Arabic reading skills based on a genre-based approach and the feasibility/validity of the developed e-book product. The research method used is research and development with the ADDIE model, which consists of five development steps, namely: 1) analysis, 2) design, 3) development, 4) implementation, and 5) evaluation. Data collection instruments include interviews and questionnaires (validation sheet). The data analysis techniques used are qualitative and quantitative. This e-book contains a collection of Islamic stories with different text genres containing text, images, audio, and hyperlinks to increase students' reading interest, facilitate their understanding of the texts presented, and support students' reading skills training. The product validation results from material experts obtained a score of 89% in the very good category. Meanwhile, validation from media experts obtained a score of 96% in the very good category. Based on the validation results, the e-book product for learning Arabic reading skills based on a genre-based approach is valid and can be implemented with students.

Abstract

Communication is the primary function of any language in the world, including Arabic, which is expressed in the form of sentences. Early Arab scholars recognized the importance of the communicative aspect in the structure of Arabic grammar. However, later scholars focus on only one aspect of grammar: inflexion. In contrast, grammar is not limited to the conditions at the ends of words. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the communicative functions through grammatical structures in Arabic language textbooks for primary schools in Malaysia (KSSR) for 2017. This study relies on the descriptive method to achieve its main objectives, utilizing Roman Jakobson's theory of language functions as an analytical framework to uncover the communication process and its functions as realized in the language materials presented in the textbook. The study found that using simple grammatical structures is of utmost importance in enhancing communicative competence among students, which aligns with the curriculum's goal of enabling students to use Arabic communicatively with precision in various situations. The study also shows five communicative functions applied in the Arabic grammatical structures in these books: referential, expressive, conative, phatic, and metalinguistic functions. This study may provide new insights for developers of Arabic curricula, presenting Arabic grammatical sentences from a more comprehensive communicative perspective, theoretically and practically, to improve the quality of Arabic language education in primary schools in particular.

Abstract

This research seeks to address some of the most common verbal collocations that appear in the texts of Al Jazeera News Channel by studying linguistic and rhetorical analysis, exploring their composition and grammatical structure, and knowing the extent of their stability or transformation based on whether they are open or closed collocations, that is, knowing the extent to which they can accompany a limited or unlimited number of syllables. This study uses an analytical approach to the implications of news texts and their associations, describing them, and exploring their depth according to the grammatical basis of Al Jazeera News Channel. Data collection techniques use observation and interviews. There are idiomatic expressions that cannot be changed, which refer to sayings, proverbs, and verses of the Qur'an. They have complex rhetorical shifts, and it is impossible for a student who does not speak Arabic to understand the social and semantic meanings behind Arabic proverbs, sayings, stories, and history without the teacher's explanation or the presence of a dictionary that translates these stories into an intermediary language, which is not available in a large number of dictionaries that translate collocations. Because verbal collocations This is one of the most important requirements for understanding, learning, and practicing the language, because language lessons for each target group of students are related to knowledge of the semantic and social contexts behind various expressions and structures. A dictionary is needed to help understand and use collocations in the appropriate context, and explain the underlying cultural and metaphorical dimensions. Non-Arabic speakers find it difficult to explain or because of the complexity of their use and the inability of students to include the real context, so it must be taken into account when preparing various linguistic curricula and dictionaries.

Abstract

The research aims to reveal the structural pattern of the interrogative sentence in the Arabic language, its characteristics compatible with the origin of linguistic use, and the manifestations of its transformation into other patterns that contradict that origin and are grammatically permissible. Because the large number of permissible grammatical images leads to difficulty for learners in understanding them, he relied on the descriptive doctrine based on collecting the statements of grammarians in describing the structure of the interrogative sentence and restricting the grammatical rulings to how the sentence is constructed. He collected data from Arabic grammar books across different eras, describing interrogative forms with examples. The research clarified the components of the interrogative sentence, the way they are arranged in the sentence, and the associated grammatical provisions that impact the form of the spoken or written sentence, whether related to deletion or separation of the components of the sentence or otherwise. The research aims to provide grammatically acceptable images of the interrogative sentence in a concentrated form in one template for the language learner to benefit from while speaking or writing and to understand what he reads or hears.

Abstract

Translated Arabic novels provide insight into the social, cultural, and identity aspects of Arab nations, yet translating these works is complex due to cultural nuances and varying norms. This research explores the preliminary norms influencing the selection and translation of Arabic novels into English post-Arab Spring, using The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz (2013, translated 2016) and Season of Martyrdom by Jamal Naji (2015, translated 2016) as case studies. Applying Toury’s (2012) theory of translation norms, the study shows how social, educational, and political factors shape translation choices and impact cross-cultural communication. The study explores how sociopolitical contexts, market demands, and publishing trends shape which narratives are deemed suitable for translation and how these choices reflect broader global perceptions of the Arab world. The analysis employs Gideon Toury’s Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) framework, focusing on both preliminary norms—such as selection criteria and translation policies—and paratextual elements, including cover design, prefaces, and promotional material, which impact the reception and interpretation of the translated works. The findings reveal that the selected novels are framed to emphasize themes of resistance, identity, and reform, highlighting the complex interplay between literature, politics, and translation. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of translation in shaping the global literary representation of the Arab Spring.

Abstract

According to modern educational theories, organized intelligences are key to effective learning and practical second language instruction. Howard Gardner's "Theory of Multiple Intelligences" is one of the most prominent. The five-volume series "Al-Arabiyyah lil-'Aalam" is a significant resource for Arabic language instruction worldwide. This study evaluates the content of this series based on the comprehensive text analysis method, applying Gardner's theory. Based on a statistical sample of 985 instances, the findings indicate that the highest frequency (540 cases of intelligence) was found in the exercises section, identified as this series's primary unit of analysis. The results of the research suggest that the "Al-Arabiyyah lil-'Aalam" series, through a novel and creative approach, utilizes nine of Gardner's intelligences to enhance and improve the four language skills, making it a suitable and practical resource for teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speakers.

Abstract

Studies on political interviews abound in the linguistics, sociology, psychology, literary studies, cognitive science, and critical discourse analysis literature. Working within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis, this study identified and discussed discursive strategies employed by Abdullah Al-Mudaifer and Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS) in an interview on Saudi’s Vision 2030. The identified discursive strategy used by MBS indexed power, control, and ideology and included stroking and political pronouns, indexing agency, closeness, and group identity. Others were positive self-representation, the number game, address and reference, antithetic constructions, relational processes, admitting errors and promising change, and questioning the interviewer’s questions. Abdullah Al-Mudaifer produced texts of resistance and enacted status asymmetry. The interview participants’ communicational goals and ideologies were relevant in managing delicate speech acts.

Abstract

The rich linguistic texture of the Holy Qur’an presents unique difficulties in maintaining the integrity of meanings across languages, especially given the complex interplay of synonyms that often carry subtle distinctions. This study aims to elucidate the contextual meanings, analyse the polysemous nature of بأس (ba’s) (punishment), and investigate the semantic distinctions between the near-synonymous terms بأس (ba’s) and بطش batsha (assault) and their AI-generated and post-edited English translations of the Qur’an. Adopting the Relation by Contrast Approach to Synonyms (RC-S) by Murphy (2003), the study utilises a qualitative approach to identify the semantic layers of meanings of the selected Qur’anic synonyms. The analysis reveals that بأس (ba’s) is polysemous in the Qur’anic text, capturing diverse meanings like punishment, battle, and hardship, reflecting its complex usage in enhancing thematic and rhetorical aspects of verses, unlike its near-synonym بطش (batsha) which is more narrowly defined as "assault." While ChatGPT’s translations of بأس (ba’s) vary in accuracy, highlighting the AI’s challenge in capturing context-specific meanings, the translation of بطش (batsha) as "grasp" fails to convey the aggressive connotations of "assault," which necessitates significant refinements by human editors to align renderings more closely with the original’s military and theological contexts.
