Abstract

This paper focuses on an essential aspect of teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, drawing on applied linguistics, a field that seeks to deepen our understanding of second language acquisition. Many theories exist in this field, but their validity can only be tested through practical application. This study applies the Processability Theory to assess Arabic language learners' proficiency. The study sample includes twenty international students from the Islamic University of Medina: students of the College of Sharia (first year) and the College of Arabic Language (eighth year). The main goal is to highlight the relevance of Processability Theory in evaluating learners' levels. The study also provides statistical analysis regarding the student's progress in learning Arabic. According to Processability Theory, language learning progresses through five levels. The application in this study focuses on three of these levels: (1) the third level, represented by the correct use of the definite article (Al-); (2) the fourth level, focused on sentence structures with basic (VSO) and free word order (SVO); and (3) the fifth level, dealing with complex sentences. The findings reveal a significant difference between the groups regarding correctly using the definite article. First-year students made considerably more errors compared to eighth-year students. However, the gap between the two groups narrowed at the fourth and fifth levels. Their use of sentences under the fourth level was similar, and while their use of complex sentences (fifth level) was rare, it did not yield statistically significant results. Nonetheless, eighth-year students showed a slight numerical advantage in this area. Overall, this study demonstrates the importance of Processability Theory in assessing learners' proficiency and highlights the variation in language learning progression.

Abstract

21st-century skills are crucial for effectively transforming Arabic language learning in the digital age. This study aims to describe the changes in students' critical thinking abilities and Arabic language learning outcomes using Quizlet media. The research subjects were all Madrasah Diniyah Nurul Huda Dinoyo Malang- Indonesia students, focusing on the mubtada and khabar lesson material. The research method was a quantitative descriptive approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design. Data collection involved administering pretest and posttest questions with critical thinking indicators, including analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The indicators for Arabic language learning outcomes were basic vocabulary skills, grammar, and the ability to analyze grammatical errors. The results indicated that the average score for students' critical thinking ability in the pretest was 18.3 (low critical thinking). In contrast, in the posttest, it was 30.00 (moderate critical thinking). As for the Arabic language learning outcomes, the pretest score was 44.67 (below the minimum completion score), and the posttest score was 81.33 (above the minimum completion score). Quizlet media can enhance students' critical thinking skills and Arabic language learning outcomes.

Abstract

The letter fā is widely used in Arabic after the letter wāw and has many meanings. This letter has no exact equivalent in Turkish. It gains meaning according to the position in which it is used. Knowing the meanings of this letter, in general, will contribute to the correct understanding of sentences and texts. The letter fā can be called both a preposition and a conjunction since it is one of the ḥurūf al-maʿānī (meaning letters) and establishes a connection between words and sentences. This study mentions the places where the letter fā is used as a conjunction, such as linking words and sentences together as the letter of attribution, expressing causation, and linking conditional and punitive sentences together. In addition, the cases where this letter comes as zā’id /supplemental/extra and other uses of this letter are also included. When the letter fā is used in the ʿaṭf/attributive function, it expresses a familiar role between “maʻṭūf” and “maʻṭūf ʿalayh”, “tartīb/arrangement” and “taʿqīb/succession”. The letter fā can also indicate cause in addition to tartīb and taʿqīb. In this case, the part before fā becomes the cause of the part after it. In addition, in some cases, this letter can express mere cause without the function of attribution. These cases are as follows: When the letter fā comes after an imperative verb, a prohibition (النهي), a question (الاستفهام), a negation (النفي), a request (العرض), an encourage (التحضيض), a wish expression (التمني), and a hope (الترجِّي).

Abstract

Translation of Qur'anic legal verses, mainly from Surah Al-Mā'idah, poses significant challenges due to its complex legal, theological, and cultural context. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of AI compared to human translation of these verses, highlighting the challenges faced in translating these complex texts into English. Utilizing Rosa's (2010) Approach to Descriptive Translation Studies, this study identifies contextual norms and influences on translation decisions, providing a framework for comparing translation strategies used by AI and human translators. The study adopts a qualitative design, analyzing ten purposefully selected verses from Surah Al-Mā'idah, translated by AI (ChatGPT) and Abdullah Yusuf Ali. This comparative analysis illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of AI and human translation in capturing the detailed nuances of Qur'anic legal verses. Findings indicate that AI translations demonstrate speed and consistency but lack the depth needed to convey theological and legal subtleties accurately. Human translations, on the other hand, exhibit more significant variability. However, they are more adept at reflecting the complex contextual meanings inherent in the original text. These results are of great importance for translation studies, particularly in understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI in translating complex religious texts. The translation of the legal verses of the Qur'an, especially from Surah Al-Mā'idah, poses significant challenges due to its complex legal, theological, and cultural context. The implications of the current study extend to scholars, translators, and religious educators who aim to improve the quality and reliability of Qur'an translations for diverse audiences. This contribution is significant in bridging the gap between traditional translation methods and emerging digital technologies in translating religious texts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of Instagram to teach Arabic reading skills (maharah qira’ah), its influence on student learning motivation, and its impact on the learning process. This study uses a quantitative-qualitative approach (mixed method) to obtain comprehensive data. Data was obtained through observations, interviews, and questionnaires to class X Language MAN 2 Malang City, Indonesia, students for the 2023/2024 school year, totalling 34 students. Qualitative data analysis uses the Miles & Huberman model, which involves data collection, reduction, and conclusion. Meanwhile, quantitative data analysis uses the Francis Galton model, which consists of descriptive analysis. The study results show that the use of Instagram as a learning medium has a significant favourable influence on student learning motivation. Instagram features such as interactive visual reels make it easier for students to understand the Arabic reading skill material and increase their interest in actively learning. Students feel more interested because learning is delivered through digital platforms relevant to their interests, so the learning process is fun and effective. As a result, Instagram media has proven effective in increasing students' learning motivation because they are directly involved in learning Arabic reading skills. This study recommends integrating social media such as Instagram as one of the innovative strategies for learning Arabic in the digital era.
