Abstract

This study investigated the insufficient Arabic listening skills among Turkish theology faculties (Islamic studies colleges) students, shortcomings in existing Arabic language programs in developing these skills, and the lack of modern teaching approaches and strategies for their enhancement. Consequently, the study aimed to create the Arabic listening skills of non-native-speaking preparatory-year students at these faculties by designing, implementing, and assessing the effectiveness of a task-based instructional program using descriptive and experimental design methods. Employing a one-group pre-test/post-test model with a sample of 30 lower-beginning (A1) level students according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Instrument checklist of Arabic listening skills and an inventory of students' functional listening needs. This inventory was then converted into functional listening tasks, upon which the task-based instructional program was built. A Listening Skills Test was created and administered to the research group before and after the program delivery. The results indicated that the proposed task-based program was highly effective, significantly developing the students' overall listening scores and individual sub-skills. Based on these findings, the study recommends applying the task-based approach in teaching Arabic and developing its listening skills for non-native speakers. Furthermore, it recommends incorporating the proposed task-based program into preparatory-year curricula in theology colleges and providing specialized training for preparatory-year instructors on implementing the task-based approach.

Abstract

This study explores the use of Arabic poetry by the linguistic scholar al-Khaṭṭābī in his commentary on Sunan Abī Dāwūd, entitled Maʿālim al-Sunan, through an analytical examination of the poetic citations he employed to interpret rare Arabic expressions and explain the precise linguistic meanings of Prophetic hadiths. Al-Khaṭṭābī was distinguished by his combination of jurisprudence and hadith studies on the one hand, and linguistic and rhetorical analysis on the other, making him an early model of interdisciplinary integration between the Islamic sciences and the Arabic language. The importance of the topic lies in revealing the function of Arabic poetry in serving the hadith text as a scholarly tool that helps establish understanding and bring meanings closer, in addition to shedding light on an aspect that has rarely been studied: the systematic interaction between Arabic literature and hadith. The choice of this topic came in response to a gap in studies concerned with the use of poetry in hadith commentary, highlighting al-Khaṭṭābī’s role as a link between the religious and linguistic sciences. The research problem is framed in the question: How did Imām al-Khaṭṭābī employ Arabic poetry in the service of hadith commentary in Maʿālim al-Sunan? And to what extent did this usage contribute to interpreting expressions and clarifying legal and linguistic meanings? The study relied on the textual-analytical method to analyze the poetic citations, the descriptive method to present and explain them, and the inductive method to trace the patterns of their usage and extract the features of the process followed by al-Khaṭṭābī. The research aims to clarify the methodology adopted by al-Khaṭṭābī in incorporating poetic evidence, analyze the role of poetry in interpreting obscure terms, uncover the relationship between literary and jurisprudential knowledge, and highlight classical Arabic poetry as a tool for understanding the Sunnah. The study concluded that al-Khaṭṭābī employed Arabic poetry—which is considered the primary source of the Arabic language—with scholarly precision tied to context and meaning, contributing to the clarification of ambiguous meanings, the explanation of subtle lexical differences, and the connection of hadith meanings to their linguistic roots.

Abstract

Arabic is a cornerstone of Islamic da’wah, serving as the primary medium for understanding the sources of Islam, such as the Quran and Hadith. However, a gap in Arabic language competency among prospective non-native preachers raises concerns about how this deficiency impacts the effectiveness of their da’wah activities. This study aims to evaluate the Arabic language proficiency among prospective non-native preacher students and its relationship with the effectiveness of their da’wah efforts. A quantitative approach was employed using a questionnaire administered to 72 third-year students from the Dakwah and Leadership Studies program at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Data were analyzed using SPSS to assess Arabic proficiency levels and their correlation with da’wah effectiveness. The findings indicate that while Arabic proficiency levels are moderate, there is a significant and positive relationship between Arabic language competency and the effectiveness of da’wah. This study proposes proactive measures such as intensive training and integrating Arabic into da’wah activities to enhance the language competency of future preachers. The study also highlights avenues for further research into Arabic proficiency and its role in da’wah effectiveness.

Abstract

Ibn al-Khatib's artistic prose is characterized by a variety of stylistic procedures in the discourse, as he diversified the modes of reception between authority, peers, and the governed, and he benefited in his discourse procedures from his vast culture, as Ibn al-Khatib brought together the culture of Andalusia. The reasons for the prose andity of his rhetorical procedures, as they mediate between direct stylistics and suggestive patterns, through comprehensive procedures, which consume all his prose, and share stylistic pillars that are not devoid of any genius statement, distributed among various styles in different books totaling over sixty publications. The research investigated his methods cautiously and traced the stylistics of discourse according to this collective space of his rhetorical procedures, especially since they are consistent in their general threads. However, I have found, after reading his non-lost product, a comprehensive reading, that there is a special style, characterized by each prose trend, while maintaining the major standard procedures that make the prose attributable to him, so I turned to one of his types, that related to prohibitions and sermons, with a rooting of the standard procedures that are common in his prose.

Abstract

With the growing interest in teaching Arabic to non-native, Chinese-speaking children—particularly in contexts related to religious and cultural identity—there is a critical need to evaluate innovative educational programs that address linguistic and cultural challenges. This study examines the effectiveness of the "Read with Miley" program in developing Arabic reading skills for this demographic, focusing on teachers' perspectives. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combined a closed-ended questionnaire to gauge general perceptions with in-depth interviews to explore specific challenges and opportunities. The study sample consisted of five teachers who had fully and repeatedly implemented the program. Results indicated that the program successfully enhanced foundational skills, such as letter recognition and vowel reading, with strong approval for core materials, including the textbook. However, limitations were observed in using interactive digital tools, which hindered student engagement. Interviews revealed systemic and organizational challenges, highlighting the need for intensive teacher training on modern technologies and age-based class restructuring to optimize individualized interaction. Key recommendations include integrating AI-driven educational activities, fostering collaborations with digital design experts, and adopting flexible methodologies to accommodate learners’ linguistic and cultural diversity. These findings provide a practical framework for policymakers to refine Arabic language programs in non-Arabic-speaking environments.

Abstract

Various studies have analyzed word formation in Standard Arabic. However, few have described it in colloquial Arabic, and none have discussed it in Jazani Arabic. To address that gap, this descriptive qualitative study analyzed words in Jazani Arabic in light of word formation and morphology. Data were collected via observations of everyday speech. In addition to morphological integrations, the study discusses five word-formation processes: 1) borrowing, 2) clipping, 3) hypocorism, 4) backformation, and 5) derivation. Based on this data, the study presents a novel morphological analysis for Jazani Arabic words. Borrowing was the most common process. Clipping was generally rare with common nouns but was familiar with proper names. While derivation was a fundamental process, it was complementary to backformation. Morphological integrations occurred across all of these word-formation processes. Nouns borrowed into Jazani Arabic were integrated into the morphology with an Arabic definite article, and borrowed verbs were integrated with a Jazani Arabic future marker. Clipping was predominantly attested with nouns, with no instances of it attested with verbs. Hypocorism showed similar but not identical patterns to those in other varieties of Arabic, while backformation was peculiar to Jazani Arabic. The study indicates that Jazani Arabic has distinctive morphological features and patterns.

Abstract

This research reveals a rare phenomenon in the history of Arabic writing that appeared in some of the writings that have reached us from the first and second centuries AH, which is the phenomenon of what the eloquent Arab writes contradicting what is spoken grammatically, which came in the context of a series of contradictions between what is written and what is spoken in Arabic writing. The research relied on discussing this phenomenon on two types of available written materials by the eloquent Arabs whose words are used as evidence: the Qur’anic script and early Islamic inscriptions. Following the descriptive analytical method, starting with defining the concept of that violation, presenting examples of it, and stating the limits of its occurrence in the Qur’anic script and early inscriptions, and discussing what clarifies it, such as stating its causes, effects, and the benefit of knowing it. The most prominent findings of the research are that this phenomenon was known in that era, which is proven in the inscriptions. As for the Qur’anic script, it did not occur overtly, but rather through different reading styles in which the readings were multiple, or through the belief of those devise places in the scripting of the Qur’an on that. One of the most prominent reasons for this phenomenon is the desire to write the word fixedly and leave the consideration of grammatical rules to the discerning and eloquent reader. This phenomenon disappeared after the development of the writing method and the spread of standard spelling rules. Still, it represents a feature of a distinctive historical stage in Arabic writing.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of eschatology in Arabic literature, focusing on the "al-Wa'dzu" (warning) element in the Quran. Its primary goal is to analyse the rhetorical aspects of Islamic art within the KEMAS community. Previous research highlights the extensive use of rhetoric in interpreting Quranic eschatological verses. However, this approach remains underutilized in Islamic art, where the "al-Wa'dzu" aspect is not prominently emphasized for the target audience. Data will be collected through observation at the Islamic Festival organized by KEMAS Malaysia, following a qualitative methodology centered on observational data. The "Dakwah @ Media" program presents Islamic art characteristics to the audience, with key topics covering parenting, the life of Prophet Muhammad, and Islamic values. However, most presenters do not connect these topics to eschatological concepts, even when the content relates directly to the signs of eschatology in Islam.
