Abstract

As the demand for Arabic proficiency grows in an increasingly interconnected world, fostering autonomous learning becomes essential for students. This study investigates the level of autonomous learning among Arabic language learners in a tertiary context. A quantitative survey is employed using Murase’s (2015) Measuring Instrument for Language Learner Autonomy (MILLA) with a 5-point Likert scale. One hundred forty-four diploma students majoring in Islamic Studies at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin (UniSIRAJ), Malaysia, attempted the questionnaire and was analyzed using SPSS. The results indicate a high level of autonomous learning among the participants, with sociocultural, technical, political-critical, and psychological factors significantly contributing to this autonomy. This study highlights the importance of fostering an environment that encourages autonomous learning and contributes to more effective and engaging Arabic language education. The implications of these findings suggest actionable strategies for educators and institutions to enhance autonomous learning, thereby improving language outcomes for tertiary-level students.

Abstract

The revolution of Arabic syntax learning is imperative in light of generational shifts and technological advancement. This study aims to critically examine the radical transformations in Arabic syntax learning models for Generation Z, focusing on the effectiveness of applied methods. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines qualitative data collected through in-depth interviews and classroom observations with quantitative data obtained via surveys and learning outcome analyses across two different timeframes. The findings reveal a significant contrast in the approach and the effectiveness of Arabic syntax instruction. Traditional learning was dominated by lecture-based and memorization methods, which, while fostering conceptual understanding, proved less effective in enhancing practical application. In contrast, for Generation Z, technology-based approaches such as interactive digital applications and gamification have increased student engagement by up to 45% compared to traditional methods. Additionally, integrating social media as a platform for syntax discussion has strengthened students' communicative competence in modern Arabic contexts. Nevertheless, the revolution in Arabic syntax learning demands a synergy between digital technology and student-centered pedagogical approaches. These findings make a significant contribution to the development of adaptive learning models aligned with the unique characteristics of Generation Z, laying the groundwork for improving Arabic language instruction in the future

Abstract

This study applies theories of cognitive semantics to uncover psychological insights from the Quran. It focuses on conceptual metaphor theory, mental schemas, mental spaces, and embodied cognition. The research aims to understand the relationship between language and cognition in religious texts, emphasizing psychological aspects related to emotional regulation, achieving spiritual balance, and enhancing psychological resilience. A descriptive analytical approach is employed to apply these theories to Quranic texts. For example, metaphors such as "light and darkness" are analyzed as symbols of guidance and misguidance, while the "straight path" schema reflects a comprehensive spiritual journey toward ethical goals. The study also examines how conceptual blending connects abstract meanings with sensory experiences and explores the role of embodied cognition in understanding the Quran as a profound linguistic and cognitive experience. The findings highlight that applying cognitive semantic theories offers innovative tools for interpreting the Quran from a modern cognitive perspective, fostering stronger integration between Islamic studies and cognitive sciences. The study underscores the need for developing interdisciplinary frameworks to analyze religious texts and interpret their psychological and spiritual teachings within their linguistic and cultural contexts.

Abstract

Learning activities to improve students' critical thinking skills are common. One of the activities that can enhance critical thinking skills is the munazharah ilmiah activity at the Ar Raayah Islamic boarding school. This study aims to find the management pattern of the munazharah ilmiah extracurricular activity and its implications for students' critical thinking, istima', and kalam skills at the Ar Raayah Islamic boarding school. This study uses a qualitative case study approach at the Ar Raayah Islamic boarding school. Data collection was carried out using interviews, observation, and documentation methods. The informants in this study were 16 students of STIBA Ar Raayah , extracurricular activity trainers, and teachers at the Ar Raayah Islamic boarding school. Data analysis consisted of reading/memoing, describing, and classifying. The study results showed that munazharah ilmiah, as an extracurricular activity, was held for students interested in participating in the Arabic debate competition. The discussion topics came from the handbook and were based on hot issues in social life. This activity was managed by the PBA Student Association (HIMA). This activity's trainers are students with experience in Arabic debate competitions. The rules in this activity follow the Qatar debate regulations and the debaters must use Arabic correctly and adequately. Munazharah ilmiah process that requires arguments trains students to think critically. The students' istima' ability is trained when listening to the opponent's argument. Likewise, the ability to write is trained when expressing arguments and rebuttals clearly and firmly in a short time. The management process of this munazharah ilmiah activity can be adopted by other Islamic boarding schools that want to train their students in critical thinking, istima', and kalam.

Abstract

This paper explores the difficulties in learning Arabic based on the students' backgrounds, along with various solutions that can maximize the effectiveness of Arabic Language Education for students. This research conveys a descriptive approach with a field study. It is a simple quantitative and qualitative descriptive study, providing a narrative description of the situation. Data was collected through interviews with 25 Arabic Program (PBA) students, PBA lecturers, and The Arabic Language Student Association (HMP PBA) activists. The data analysis model used in this research follows the model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The result shows that each student in the PBA study program faces difficulties in Arabic language skills and components according to their educational background. Students from modern pesantren backgrounds do not experience many language difficulties. The most significant difficulty for students is kalam skills. The factors influencing language difficulties include interest, educational background, teaching and methodological aspects, environment, student activities, and psychological and economic factors. The efforts made by the study program to strengthen students' language skills are still limited, consisting mainly of additional activities such as kalam and qiraah practice. HMP Bahasa Arab also organizes language communities, such as language workshops (daurah lughah) and competitions related to Arabic language proficiency. However, these activities are only attended by some students who are already relatively proficient in the language.

Abstract

This research attempts to reveal the criteria for selecting and organizing grammatical content in the Umm Al-Qura University series for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, considering it a model worthy of study as it is the most recent series prepared by a group of professors and experts from the Institute of Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers at Umm Al-Qura University. Hence, the research gains its importance in shedding light on one aspect of language teaching: the grammatical aspect in this important educational series that has enriched the field of language teaching by benefiting from previous efforts and what has been new in teaching foreign languages. The research problem is summarized in the multiplicity and diversity of visions in organizing grammatical content in theory and application, as well as the need for modern systems in language teaching to crystallize an educational curriculum that considers the significant development in societies. The research is based on the descriptive analytical approach to the contents and objectives of the grammatical content in the series, which amounts to eight books allocated to students in the Language Qualification Diploma Program. The research included an introduction and several axes related to the foundations for selecting and organizing grammatical content. The research revealed that the series considers the criteria for selecting and organizing content according to modern linguistic and educational visions. It considered the distinction between academic and scientific grammar and the logical sequence, such as moving from the general to the specific, from the simple to the complex, and from the easy to the difficult. It also considers the gradation level, continuity, sequence, and integration. Its communicative activities also took into account the inclusion of grammatical content and the enhancement of its skills

Abstract

The types of sentences and verbs are among the essential linguistic elements that contribute to building meaning within literary texts, especially in classic Arabic poetry, which relies on the precision of expression and strength of connotation. This research aims to study the rhetorical implications and interpretations of sentences and verbs in the poetry of Ali ibn al-Jahm by analyzing his use of verbs and their role in embodying meanings and poetic purposes based on the theory of statistical stylistics. The research relies on the rhetorical descriptive-analytical method, where sentences are classified according to their types (nominal and verbal), and verbs are classified according to their types in terms of tense (past and present), affirmation (affirmative and negative), and structure (known and unknown), and analyzing their impact on depicting the emotions and ideas expressed by the poet. The research also discusses the relationship between the choice of verbs and the general context of the poem, with a focus on rhetorical techniques using the statistical stylistic approach that enhances poetic connotation. The results reveal that Ali ibn al-Jahm used verbs with artistic precision that reflect his psychological states and profound intellectual stances, making his poetry a rich model for studying the interaction between linguistic structure and literary meaning. This is evident in the frequency of nominal sentences in his poetry—indicative of permanence—less common than verbal sentences—indicative of movement and the renewal of events. We also found a predominance of past tense verbs over present tense verbs in many of his poems and a predominance of the active voice over the passive voice. All these phenomena indicate his love and longing for the past days with the Caliph al-Mutawakkil during his lifetime in the Abbasid Empire.
