Abstract

Gender equality implementation in education aspect in Indonesia is still far from the ideal criteria. One of the reasons is affected by the patriarchal culture that constructs society’s perspective. The Indonesian government has conducted many studies on gender to promote gender equity and inclusion in Indonesia. As a result, the Minister of Education issued regulation No.84/2008 concerning guidelines for the implementation of gender in education. However, access to education, quality education, and the level of participation of women still lack (Lestariyana, et al., 2020; Lestyoningsih, 2020; Mustofa, et al., 2021; Natasha, 2013; Suwarno, et al., 2021; Tyarakanita, et al., 2021). Thus, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive literature review to illustrate the implementation of gender equality in schools to promote awareness. Through qualitative descriptive study, a variety of publications and journal articles were analyzed. The literature review was divided into three sections, involving the portrayal of gender equality in Indonesia, gender bias in education, and implementation of gender equality in school. The study concludes some aspects that should be implemented to create a gender-responsive school environment and raise the awareness of the students, including the development of curriculum, learning methods, teacher development, and continuous assessment. Developing all these aspects periodically means breaking down the “traditional” cultural concept of gender, which certain genders sometimes excluded. Development needs to be done to ensure the school promotes and facilitates gender equality.

Abstract

The Bugis language, belonging to the Austronesian family, serves as a crucial element of cultural identity and heritage for the Bugis ethnic group in Indonesia, particularly in Sinjai City. However, like many indigenous languages, Bugis faces challenges in preservation due to socio-cultural factors. This research delves into preservation efforts and sociolinguistic dynamics surrounding the Bugis language since 2000, aiming to provide insights for stakeholders. Drawing on qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observations, this study aims to explore the motivations driving preservation efforts, investigate the role of education, examine socio-cultural factors influencing language use, and assess the effectiveness of existing preservation strategies. Findings reveal that cultural identity maintenance, intergenerational transmission, and the desire to safeguard linguistic diversity are primary motivations. Education emerges as pivotal, though hindered by the dominance of Bahasa Indonesia and limited institutional support. Socio-cultural factors like urbanization, migration, media influence, and linguistic stigma further challenge preservation. Strengths of current strategies include community engagement and cultural affirmation, while limitations include lack of support and linguistic stigma. Recommendations for augmenting preservation efforts include advocating for policy reforms, community empowerment, digital resources, and promoting multilingualism. Ultimately, preserving the Bugis language entails a holistic approach that honors cultural diversity and empowers the Bugis community.

Abstract

The current paper is dedicated to examining the traditional and Islamic dowry (sompa plus panai and mahr) in modern Bugis society. Nowadays, it is interesting to discuss the dowry as perceived by modern Bugis society as an expensive obligation. It is also relevant to investigate the dowry and how it is negotiated in Bugis society. For the researchers to find the answers, reading the classical Islamic text of Pau-Paunna Sitti Rabiyatul Awaliya was applied in the research as well as observing the Bugis society. Finally, the researchers found that the dowry (Sompa) in Bugis tradition has been regarded as an expensive payment and therefore needs to be negotiated accordingly. It is found in the classical text entitled Pau-Paunna Sitti Rabiyatul Awaliya (PPSRA) that Sitti gave her sompa free and changed the sompa to mahr in the form of mastery of knowledge. However, most of the Bugis women could not understand the implied message, so they still adhered to the sompa plus panai’ tradition. The implication of the study is to provide a reference by dowry fighters so that Bugis women are brave to move from sompa tradition to mahr without panai’.

Abstract

In literature, characters often reflect real-life individuals, sometimes resembling people known to the author. Likewise, literary settings may mirror real-world environments, creating a sense of familiarity and authenticity within the narrative. The inclusion of authentic elements, particularly genuine human characters, in literary compositions renders them subjects for psychological examination. Such works serve as psychological reflections of the author while also exerting psychological influence on the reader. For instance, the novel "Hujan" recounts the life journey of a young girl named Lail. In accordance with the title of the novel, every important moment that occurs in Lail always has an atmosphere or connection to rain. Lail as the main character in this novel has a fairly ordinary character with a personality type like that of young girls in general. This research aims to describe the structure of the novel "Hujan" by Tere Liye and describe the archetype of the character Lail based on Jung's analytical psychology theory using qualitative descriptive research methods. The data collection techniques used in this research are reading, listening and note-taking techniques. This research produces the structure of the novel "Hujan" by Tere Liye in the form of intrinsic elements of the novel in the form of; 1) theme; 2) plot; 3) characterization; 4) background; and 5) point of view. Apart from that, this research also produces elements of the archetype of the character Lail in the novel "Hujan" by Tere Liye in the form of persona, shadow, animus, and self.

The study's results indicate that cultural acculturation significantly influences the communication behavior of the Bugis community in Boroko Utara Village, with a coefficient of 0.626 or 62.6%. This is attributed to the Bugis community's long-term adaptation. For instance, the Bugis community has embraced the customs and traditions of the Boroko Utara Village community. Additionally, factors such as rapid speech delivery, adaptability, self-confidence, and historical relationships have contributed to the Bugis community's integration into the Boroko Utara Village community. The greater similarity between Bugis and Boroko Utara Village cultures, which constitute their new environment, facilitates and accelerates cultural acculturation, consequently affecting changes in their communication behavior.

The theory of solipsism is used to understand the experience of the novel writer Namaku Hiroko in understanding culture, including the concepts and perspectives of Japanese culture as depicted in the work of N.H. Dini. Qualitative research methods with a phenomenological approach are used in this research to describe everything related to Japanese culture based on a critical student discussion. This study found that the principle of solipsism exists in Japanese culture as outlined by NH. Dini in Namaku Hiroko.
