Abstract

This research delves into the feminist discourse on sexuality in Shinta Febrianty's poetry, specifically focusing on her collection, "Aku Bukan Masa Depan (2003)." Drawing on Michel Foucault's theory of Discourse and Power Relations, the study employs a qualitative approach that integrates content and discourse analysis. Through meticulous examination of Febrianty's poems, the research unpacks the intricate dynamics of power that suppress female sexuality within Indonesian literary traditions. Thematic analysis illuminates the multifaceted interplay of identity, resistance, and societal expectations embedded within Febrianty's verses. The study concludes by reflecting on the evolving landscape of Indonesian literature, particularly in light of the increasing prevalence of sexuality discourses in female-authored works. It critically questions the motives and sustainability of this trend, emphasizing the need for discerning steps to navigate the shifting cultural dynamics influenced by both local and global forces.

Abstract

This study explores the perception of Indonesian English language lecturers in implementing Student-Centred Learning (SCL) in Indonesian higher education. One-way teaching method still occurs and needs to be shifted to two-way interactive teaching method or active learning to develop student engagement in learning activities, and SCL is considered as one of the approaches to develop student engagement. The focus of this study is more on the perception of three English language lecturers towards SCL implementation. This is to consider that their roles are essential in delivering the materials as their responsibility is to facilitate and to drive the learning activity, especially in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesian higher education. This research adopted qualitative study by conducting in-depth semi-structured interviews as the method for a small number of English language lecturer participants, and grounded theory was used as the analytical method enabling the presentation of lecturer perception from their context. Findings revealed that the three lecturers had an adequate understanding of the concept of SCL, and they thought implementing SCL is useful and valuable to develop students’ engagement with learning activities and to improve lecturers’ teaching practice even though there are still some challenges that need to be considered. The findings also showed how the participants encountered the challenges and the personal strategies that they saw as effective to be applied. This study suggests it is worth reconsidering the possibilities of valuable English language lecturers’ perception towards SCL implementation in Indonesian higher education.

Abstract

This study is the reflection of part of speech classification by EFL students. This study intended to deduce the students’ familiarity of parts of speech in the EFL Context. The study was accomplished in Universitas Sulawesi Barat, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, English education department in the academic year 2023-2024. The sample was 97 students of the third semester in English Education department who will begin intermediate grammar class. The instruments used to collect data were tests that contained two types. The first test was the students chose the part of speech of 24 words while the second test was the students answered 14 multiple choices. The result of this study revealed that students‘familiarity about part of speech was still fair. This was evidenced by the data that has been analyzed that the percentage of students who categorized words into the correct part of speech only reached an average of 40%. Besides, the results of multiple choices showed that the most comprehended part of speech was pronoun. It was around 21.6% - 22.7% of the errors found in the students‘ answers and the least comprehended part  of speech was  adverb and preposition that reached the correct answer around 25.8 %– 29.9%. Thus, it was suggested that the students should learn more about parts of speech. The lecturer must pair the topics taught in class with part of speech so that students became familiar with it and can ultimately differentiate.

Abstract

The existence of virtual communication using the internet affects all sectors of society, including education and impact coaching. Virtual communication in the Supervisor Coaching 1-on-1 program conducted by Rumah Kepemimpinan facilitates each participant to enjoy greater flexibility in the process of self-development, where Supervisors dig deeper into the challenges, needs, aspirations of each participant, then discuss problems or obstacles that arise in order to support participants to become the best version of themselves. This research uses a qualitative conceptual model of Computer Mediated Communication with the aim to describe the interaction and engagement (active participation and openness) and the use of the teleconferencing platform (challenges, benefits, and constraints) with analysis leading to a higher level of abstraction; from manifest content to latent content. Data was collected from semi-structured interviews via Zoom Meeting teleconference to 4 participants and 3 Supervisors who had undergone 1-on-1 Supervisor Coaching for 14 months. The results showed that the interaction and active participation of participants with Supervisors in the use of the teleconference platform resulted in effective outcomes to help participants improve themselves, overcome challenges, and be more open in achieving goals. However, obstacles such as signal and internet networks are still a problem.

Abstract

Within the vast landscape of Nigerian literature, evolving into three principal literary genres, the critical study of poetry has been somewhat neglected, especially when contrasted with the substantial analysis devoted to drama and novels. This is partially attributed to the language used in poetry, its nature which is steep in semantic indirection and its method of pedagogy which often problematizes its appreciation. This study contributes to the study of poetry by exploring Nigerian poetry within the tenets of M.A.K. Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistic, and qualitative and descriptive design. The analysis focuses on a selected corpus of written Nigerian poetry in the English language, by Wole Soyinka, Christopher Okigbo, Tanure Ojaide, Odia Ofeimun, Psalms Chinaka, and Obari Gomba, which spans the oeuvres of three distinct generations and serve as exemplars of their respective generations. The study provides valuable insights into the significance of language, the evolution of Nigerian poetry, and its styles and functions. It is supported by tangible examples that showcase various elements, such as cohesion, deviation, and code-mixing. It offers a crucial understanding that the use of English in Nigerian poetry is not just a colonial legacy. It is a choice shaped by postcolonial reality. Its deployment is not incidental but a deliberate act of appropriation, protest, and a call for change. This is by the amplification of the voices of marginalized groups within Nigerian society such that language as a socio-semiotic system is deployed to tackle multifaceted issues that plague Nigerian society. The study submits that there is a nuanced tapestry of ideological and stylistic dialogue that connects and differentiates the first, second, and third generations of Nigerian poets. This intergenerational dialogue highlights a continuum of thematic and aesthetic concerns, with notable shifts reflecting the evolving socio-political landscape of Nigeria.

Abstract

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements intersecting with educational practices, the current inquiry focuses on the transformative potential of machine learning models, specifically ChatGPT, within higher education learning environments. Central to the discourse is the question: To what extent can ChatGPT function as a transformative tool in these educational spaces? While existing literature ventures into the capabilities of ChatGPT for simplistic tasks such as text generation, a comprehensive argumentative review that scrutinises its pedagogical applications remains conspicuously absent. This lacuna in academic scholarship necessitates the present study, which employs a multidisciplinary framework incorporating active learning theories, blended pedagogical models, and critical pedagogy. Through a meticulous dissection of empirical evidence, the investigation reveals ChatGPT's potential to enhance student engagement, enriching the curriculum and posing new ethical considerations. Significance emanates from the nuanced understanding and critical appraisal of ChatGPT's role, limitations, and ethical dilemmas in higher education, thereby contributing to a burgeoning field at the intersection of machine learning and pedagogy.

Abstract

Studying errors in English as a foreign language is crucial for both teachers and learners. This study aims to identify and analyze the types of errors in writing descriptive texts produced by students at SMA N 8 Manado, with a focus on determining the most prevalent types. This qualitative study employs the classification error theory based on Dulay et al. (1982), namely, the surface strategy taxonomy, omission, misordering, addition, and misformation. The students in SMA N 8 Manado, as the sample of this study, were asked to write a paragraph about their goals. The results of this study showed the percentage of errors made by students in writing descriptive text, which are, omission error (25,23%), error of misordering (7,47%), error of addition (10,28%), and error of misformation (57,94). This study also found other errors that are produced by some students that are not included in the classification of errors by Dulay et al (1982), they are errors in punctuation and capitalization.
