Abstract

Pacific white shrimp (Litopennaeus vannamei) is a type of shrimp that is very easy to cultivate because it has several advantages, it is resistant to disease and has a high survival rate, and productivity can reach 13.6 tons/ha. Very high density because it can use feed and space more efficiently. This is what makes many farmers in Indonesia cultivate it. Despite the many advantages, there are still many obstacles faced by cultivators who experience failure and losses. The failure was caused by poor water quality during cuture and the emergence of disease attacks that caused slow growth decreased production and resulted in huge losses for farmers. To overcome these problems, it is necessary to improve the water quality of the cultivation media used. Water quality improvement was carried out by the application of probiotics for the vannamei nursery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the optimal dose/cell count on water quality and shrimp growth and evaluate the developmental level of pathogenic bacteria treated with Epipelic Diatoms (DE) and Probiotic. The method used was an experimental method using a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments tested were A (pure seawater), B (100% DE), C (100% PB), D (100% DE+100% PB). The seeds used were PL 6 vannamei shrimp with an average weight of 0.175 g and an average length of 5.5. The results showed that the combination of DE and PB had a significant effect (p<0.05) on water quality and the growth and survival of post-vannamei larvae.

Abstract

This study examined the length-weight relation and condition factor of Sarotherodon galilaeus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Nguru-Gashua wetlands, Northeast, Nigeria. A total of 375 specimens were purchased from local fishermen at the designated landing sites for six months. Results of morphometric characteristics showed that the body weight of male S. galilaeus ranged from 127-770 g (601.7±28.01) and females ranged from 272 – 704 g (711.3±38.12). Meristic features show that spinous anal fin rays were constant in both sexes while soft dorsal fin rays, pectoral fin rays, soft anal fin rays and spinous dorsal fin rays had the same range for both sexes. The sex ratio (1:2.18) observed in this study tends to favour male species but contrasts with the general assumption of a sex ratio of 1:1. Mean coefficient of determination was 0.89±0.07 and 0.87±0.07 for male and female S. galilaeus respectively indicating that length-weight relationship model is very reliable. This implies that the change in weight of the sampled fish was caused by 88.52% and 86.68% change in length of male and female S. galilaeus respectively.  It was further revealed that both sexes (b = 2.86±0.18 and 2.88±0.35) had negative allometric growth patterns. The wetland's environmental conditions were within a tolerable range for cichlids.

Abstract

Coral transplantation activities are carried out as conservation efforts to save coral reef ecosystems and the species that live and depend on these ecosystems. In its implementation, knowledge regarding effective and efficient transplantation methods is required. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of fragment size and water depth on the growth rate of transplanted Stylophora pistillata at Serangan Beach. By knowing this, coral transplantation activities can be carried out effectively. Field research was carried out from November to April 2022 using the Randomized Block Design method with two factors, namely depth variation (1 m, 3 m, and 5 m) and initial fragment sizes (3 cm, 5 cm and 7 cm). This study used 135 fragments of Stylophora pistillata. The analysis showed that the fragment sizes of 3 cm, 5 cm and 7 cm had significant differences in the rate of coral growth. However, based on the depth variation, only the depth of 1 m differed significantly from the other two depths. The best coral growth rate was observed in corals using an initial fragment size of 7 cm which was transplanted at a depth of 1 m with the highest average growth rates of 0.93 cm/month (height) and 0.79 cm/month (width). Based on the results, it was also known that the number of corals remaining at the end of the study was 265 fragments so the value of survival rate from transplantation activities was 97.78%. Maintaining environmental water conditions and carrying out maintenance and cleaning corals from algae and sedimentation needs to be carried out intensively to maintain the survival rate on Serangan Beach.

Abstract

Litopenaeus vannamei is one of the largest commodities having a major impact on the global economy. Shrimp larvae have drastic changes in morphology and physiology which require extra maintenance. Feed management in early rearing using a blind feeding system which plankton as the main food. The relation between plankton and C/N needs to be investigated to optimize the growth of natural feed. The aims of the study were to analyze plankton community structure; the relationship between plankton to C/N and the environmental parameters; and determine the shrimp preferences of plankton. Data were collected at 3 points in 3 different ponds (PA, PB, PC) on day 8 and day 15 using a stratified sampling method with criteria (intensive system and blind feeding phase). Plankton density and C/N relationship were analyzed using Linear Regression, plankton and environmental parameters using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). Shrimp food preferences were analyzed descriptively in percentage. The results showed that diatoms and dinoflagellates dominated phytoplankton, and rotifers dominate zooplankton. C/N showed a positive correlation to protozoa, but a negative correlation to pennate diatoms and copepods. The most influential environmental factors for both phytoplankton and zooplankton density were temperature, C-organic, salinity, pH, alkalinity, and dissolved oxygen.

Abstract

Cantang grouper is a hybrid grouper which is one of the main grouper species cultivated in Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate the growth and health status of cantang grouper in floating net cages supplemented with clove powder. This study used a completely randomized design with three treatments, each with three replications. Two levels of clove powder dose used were 10 and 15 g kg-1 and one treatment without clove powder dose (control). Feed treatment using the repelletting method. Parameters observed were growth, survival rate, levels of malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase enzyme, blood parameters, phagocity activity, total bacterial count (TBC) and total vibrio count (TVC). The results showed that the treatment of clove powder supplementation in cantang grouper feed for 30 days was able to increase the growth, survival rate, activity of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), and differential leukocyte (lymphocyte). The application of clove powder in the feed did not significantly affect the total erythrocytes, leukocytes, hematocrit, phagocytic activity, total bacterial count (TBC) and total vibrio count (TVC) of hybrid grouper in floating net cages. The conclusion of this study, administration of clove powder at a dose of 15 g kg-1 feed was able to significantly increased growth, differential leukocyte (lymphocyte), and survival rate of cantang grouper in floating net cages.

Abstract

Fishing ports play an important role in facilitating fishing business activities and supporting fish resource management. The completion of facilities at fishing ports will aid in the continuation of fishing business operations. As a Fishing Port, the Muara Angke Nusantara Fishing Port must provide good services and respond to the needs of the Muara Angke fishery community, particularly for supporting industry in Jakarta. Therefore, the facilities of Muara Angke Nusantara Fishing Port must be evaluated (NFP). The study aimed to analyze the facilities at Muara Angke Nusantara Fishing Port to improve their performance by analyzing the conditions of the fishing port facilities, the level of utilization of the facilities, and the strategy for developing fishing ports with SWOT analysis so that they can contribute to supporting activities and the fishing industry in Jakarta. This research was carried out at the Muara Angke Fishing Port in July 2022. The study used a descriptive method. A purposive sampling method was used to collect data from 50 fishery business actors at the Muara Angke Fishing Port. The facility score was 2.5, indicating that the facilities at the Nusantara Fishery Port were good, but the level of utilization was low due to the length of the pier, the area of the pond, the depth of the harbor pool, and the utilization rate of the fish auction. The SWOT analysis indicated that the X; Y results were 0.12 and 0.54 which were located in quadrant I or the S-O (Strength-Opportunity) strategy. As a result, to increase the facility utilization rate score, the Muara Angke Archipelago Fishery Port (PPN) must improve services and attract investors.

Abstract

In this study, we used data on the length and weight of fish to determine the length-weight relationship and condition factors of eight commercial fish targeted by traditional Papuan fishers in Youtefa Bay, Papua Province, Indonesia. The fish species were Lutjanus fulvus, Gerres oyena, Parupeneus barberinus, Siganus spinus, Siganus canaliculatus, Pelates quadrilineatus. Mugil cephalus, and Hemiramphus far. A total of 245 fish specimens were collected from Papuan fishermen from January to March 2020. The total body length and weight ranged from 15.2 to 32.1 cm (average 20.26±3.73 cm) and 42.72 to 371.86 gr (average 124.10±52.45 gr), respectively. The b value ranged from 2.692 to 3.079, with the coefficient of determination (R2) ranging from 0.902 to 0.995. The growth patterns of the eight fish species were allometric (b≠3; t-test<t-tab), where L. fulvus (2.824), P. barberinus (2.914), S. canaliculatus (2.989), P. quadrilineatus (2.958), M. cephalus (2.910), and H. far (2.692) have negative allometric growth (b<3). In contrast, G. oyena (3.060) and S. spinus (3.079) have positive allometric growth (b>3). The relative condition factor and Fulton condition factor values ranged from 0.874 to 1.201 (average 0.999±0.321) and 0.204 to 2.726 (average 1.612±0.515). M. cephalus had a higher relative condition factor, while L. fulvus had a higher Fulton condition factor compared to other fish species.

Abstract

Gelatin can be used as an emulsifier, thickener, and humectant in body lotions. Body lotion must contain natural ingredients that can prevent skin damage such as liquid smoke, which is a natural ingredient that can be used as an antioxidant and antibacterial. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of gelatin on the features of body lotion and the effect of adding liquid immediately as an antioxidant and antibacterial. The treatments used were gelatin with different concentrations (0%, 1%, 3%, and 5%) in the opening study and liquid smoke concentrations of 0%, 0.3%, 0.5%, and 0.7% in the main study with three repetition times. Parameters observed were viscosity, hedonic, pH, antioxidant activity, and TPC. The analysis revealed that all test parameters had a significant effect (P<0.05). The addition of gelatin with a concentration of 3% was the best treatment, with a viscosity value of 2847± 89,37 cP (according to SNI 16-4399-1996) and a hedonic value of 5.73<µ<5.91 (preferred by the panelists). While the best treatment for adding liquid smoke as an antioxidant and antibacterial was 0,7% liquid smoke with an antioxidant activity value of 34.87±0.325%, a TPC value of 2.46±0.071 log colonies/g, a pH value of 7.12± 0.025 and did not cause skin irritation.

Abstract

Floating cage fish farming is an aquaculture activity that is mostly carried out on the coast of Pekalongan. The purpose of this study was to estimate the carrying capacity of Pekalongan coastal waters as a floating net cage aquaculture activity zone. The research method used is descriptive qualitative and quantitative descriptive by calculating the indicators of Trophic Status Index (TSI), phosphorus, feed conversion ratio, and the carrying capacity level of the waters. The results showed that chlorophyll-a values ranged from 6.44-8.24 ê­’g/L, total phosphorus 12.44-14.80 ê­’g/L, feed conversion ratio 1.10-1.25, TSI (Trophic Status Index) values 48.2-54.6, harvested biomass 120-157 kg/ floating net cages (KJA). The carrying capacity of the waters for KJA cultivation is 145.43 tons of fish/year, and the number of existing KJA for cultivation is 110 KJA. The conclusion from the results of this study is that the carrying capacity on Pekalongan coastal waters when used as a floating net cage aquaculture activity zone is estimated to be able to accommodate approximately 145.43 tons of fish/year or the equivalent of 121 KJA. Currently, there are 110 KJA plots in the Jeruksari coastal waters, which means that the maximum carrying capacity of the waters that can be used for KJA cultivation is 11 KJA.

Abstract

Fishing ports are crucial to the sustainable management of fisheries resources and enterprises that depend on the fishery. The objective of this study was to analyze the levels of facilities availability and service quality of fishing ports in the islands through a case study of Tanjungpandan Islands Fishing Port in Belitung Island. This study was conducted by combining survey methods, observation, as well as in-depth interviews with the port users and managers.  Due to Covid-19 pandemic, field research was conducted in two periods: from September to October 2020 and from January to February 2022. Respondents were selected by applying the snowball sampling method and resulted in 70 selected respondents, consisting of fishermen, skippers, traders, factory managers or fish processing units, and port managers. Structured questionnaires were used for data collection.  It proceeded into descriptive-qualitative analysis and combined with SERVQUAL and IPA (Importance Performance Analysis) methods. The study demonstrated that six port facilities failed to meet the Nusantara (inter-island) fishing port standards as outlined in the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries' Regulation No. 8, year 2012. Eight port services that were considered important indicated low performance to support the island’s fish supply chain. The total score of basic, functional, and supporting facilities was 60.46% (within 0 – 100% scale) and considered as relative “good”. Therefore, given that the port is the main hub of marine fisheries activities on Belitung island, it is crucial to increase the accessibility, quality, and services of fishing port facilities in order to support the fish supply chain in the islands.
