Abstract

High energy consumption has an impact on the crisis caused by the decline in fossil energy reserves, so that Indonesia must have other energy alternatives in the form of biofuels, namely bioethanol. Knowing the effect of fermentation time on ethanol content, pH value, and brix content obtained from sugarcane juice is the purpose of this study. Using completely randomized design (CRD) with fermentation time factor. Research shows that fermentation time has an effect on ethanol content and acidity (pH), but has no effect on sugar content (brix). The best treatment was obtained at 6 days of fermentation with ethanol content of 7.67%, acidity (pH) 4.87%, and sugar content (brix) 6.33%. the ratio of high and low amount of ethanol produced is influenced by sugar consumption and yeast growth during the fermentation process.

Abstract

This research aim to identify the characteristics catchment area of jatiroke and present in the form of spatial data. The descriptive method was employed in this study. The results showed of Jatiroke catchment area was 5695,80 ha. Schmidt-Ferguson and Oldeman's classification of climate puts the climatic characteristics of the Jatiroke catchment area in the same group as type C and type C3. The Jatiroke catchment area has an elongated and narrow shape (like a bird feather), which impacts the amount of water that enters the river. The Jatiroke catchment area has an elongated and narrow drainage pattern and is shaped like a bird's feather based on the characteristics of the watershed. Land cover in the Jatiroke catchment area is dominated by forest mixed covering an area of 1615 ha with a percentage of 28%. Andosol and Kambisol soil types are found in the Jatiroke catchment area. Kambisol soil type dominates with an area of 3245.57 ha with a percentage of 57% of the total area. The slope of the Jatiroke catchment area is dominated by moderately steep and steep slope classes with an area of 3905.4 ha and 3278.2 ha, respectively, with an area presentation of 27.75% and 23.29%.

Abstract

Synbiotic yogurt is a yogurt that contains probiotics and prebiotics and is one type of functional food. This study aims to determine the effect of the addition of L. casei and ambon banana flour on the chemical characteristics of synbiotic yogurt.  The study was conducted using a randomized group design with two treatments, namely the type of starter and the concentration of ambon banana flour. Starters used: 1) Steptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus; 2) Steptococcus thermophillus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and Lactobacillus casei. The concentration of added banana flour is as follows: 0; 2,5; 5,0; 7,5; and 10%. The observed variables include pH, total titrated acid, and reduction sugar.  The results showed that the addition of L. casei to yogurt culture increased pH, total titrated acid, and reduction sugar. Where, the increase in the concentration of ambon banana flour decreases the pH and sugar reduction but increases the total titrated acid yogurt.

Abstract

The Reban Batu irrigation area located in West Sumbawa Regency has experienced a decline in the performance of its irrigation system. Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts to improve the performance of the irrigation system by carrying out maintenance and rehabilitation, which is based on the results of the irrigation performance index assessment. The purpose of this study is to determine the irrigation system performance index in the Reban Batu irrigation area and the variables that affect irrigation performance. As for the irrigation system performance assessment, it can be based on the decree of PUPR No. 12/PRT/M/2015 and the MASSCOTE Method. The irrigation system performance assessment was carried out by direct surveys of the location and interviews with Water User Association (WUA) Farmers as beneficiaries and operational and maintenance (OM) officers as managers, resulting in a performance index based on the decree of PUPR 68.26% which was included in the category of underperforming and requiring attention. Meanwhile, based on the MASSCOTE method, the score is 2.69 or the level of service is in the poor category. Based on path analysis, the indicator variables of Irrigation Service (X1), WUA (X2), Human Resources of OM Officers  (X3), and the Modernization of OM (X4)together have a significant effect on the irrigation performance variable (Y) of 0.931 or 93.1%.

Abstract

Concerns about the side effects of synthetic antioxidants consumption have intrigued many researchers to find potential natural antioxidant resources. Most natural antioxidants can be found in plants in the form of phenolic compounds, especially simple phenolics and flavonoids. The aim of this research is to measure antioxidant activity, total phenol and total flavonoid content in katuk leaf extract (Breynia androgyna (L.). The stages of this research are including extraction using several types of solvents, identification of metabolites using thin layer chromatography (TLC), antioxidant activity assay using DPPH, determination of total phenolic content using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, and determination of total flavonoid content using Chang's method. The results showed that the IC50 values of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extract of katuk leaves from Bandung were 107.52; 67.61; and 39.04 g/mL respectively, whilst for katuk leaves from Sukabumi were 102.39; 67.26; and 27.07 g/mL. Moreover, total phenolic content of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts of katuk leaves from Bandung were 12.68; 14.40; and 15.99 mg GAE/g sample respectively, meanwhile for katuk leaves from Sukabumi were 13.14; 14.10; and 16.06 mg GAE/g sample. Furthermore, total flavonoid content for n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extract of katuk leaves from Bandung was 6.23; 8.65; and 10.73 mg QE/g sample respectively, while for katuk leaves from Sukabumi it was 6.20; 8.55; and 10.81 mg QE/g sample. In conclusion, the ethanol extract showed the highest antioxidant activity with very strong intensity. Furthermore, simplicia from Sukabumi had higher antioxidant activity than simplicia from Bandung.

Abstract

Antioxidants are compounds that can counteract free radicals. The macroalgae Euchema cottonii belongs to a type of seaweed from the Rhodophyta which is thought to have antioxidant activity. In this study, the antioxidant activity was tested using the CUPRAC method using spectrophotometry at 450 nm and the determination of total phenolic compounds in the extract and macroalgae fraction Eucheuma cottonii using the Folin Ciocalteu method. The extraction method was carried out using the maceration method with 70% ethanol and fractionation using ECC with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water (20% v/v). The results of TLC monitoring of Eucheuma cottonii showed the presence of flavonoid compounds, phenols, alkaloids, steroids, and triterpenoids. The results of the antioxidant activity test showed that the EC50 for the ethanol extract and the n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water fractions were 89.11; 143.40; 100.02 and 90.22 g/ml respectively with EC50 vitamin C as a comparison of 6,86 g/ml. The results of the determination of the total phenolate content of the ethanol extract and the fractions of n- hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water were 2.77; 1.96; 2.76; and 3.09 mg/GAE per 100 mg extract. The ethanol extract had a strong antioxidant activity with an EC50  89.11 g/ml and the highest total phenol content was in the methanol-water fraction of 3.09 mg/GAE per 100 mg extract. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of the macroalga Eucheuma cottonii has the potential as an alternative source of antioxidants.

Abstract

Robusta coffee is a drink that is like by all peoples and has become part of lifestyle. Coffee can be combined with other ingredients to increase its benefits and one of them is moringa. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the addition of moringa powder on the quality of robusta coffee. The method that used is this study was complete randomized design (CRD). The treatment of this study was the formulation of coffee and moringa powder with 6 treatments, namely KK0 (100% ground coffee: 0% moringa powder), KK1 (ground coffee 90% : moringa powder 10%), KK2 (ground coffee 80% : moringa powder 20%), KK3 (ground coffee 70% : moringa powder 30%), KK4 (ground coffee 60% : moringa powder 40%) and KK5 (ground coffee 50% : moringa powder 50%). The parameters tested are chemical analysis (moisture content, antioxidant activity and pH) and organoleptic (taste, flavour and color). The results showed that the lowest water content was obtained in the KK0 treatment (3.33%), the highest antioxidant content in the KK5 treatment (87.42%) and the highest pH in the KK0 treatment (6.57). The results for the orgnoleptic test found that the flavour has a value of 2.25 - 3.30 (dislike - neutral) and the taste has a value of 1.95-3.35 (dislike - neutral), while the color has a value of 3.10 - 3.50 (neutral - likes).

Abstract

Energy requirements are increasing with the increased of human activities that use either fossil fuel or biofuel. Biomass can be utilised as an alternative energy source in the form of briquettes. This study aims to increase the utilization of bagasse through the manufacture of briquettes using glutinous rice flour as the adhesive. Research variables include moisture content, ash content, destruction index, burning time and calorific value. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with variations in the concentration of glutinous rice flour 20%, 30%, and 40%. The results showed that the water content ranged from 5.85% - 7.65%. Ash content ranged from 6.44 to 8.14%. The destruction index was 0.24 – 0.65%. the burning time was between 124.67 -155 minutes, and the calorific value produced from bagasse briquettes was 7069.8 – 9759.3 cal/gram. The calorific value tend to decreased as the concentration of the adhesive was increased

Abstract

This study aims to determine the growth response of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) to liquid organic fertilizer noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia L.) grown in lebak swamps. In this study, a randomized block design (RBD) method was used which consisted of 6 treatments and 4 replications. The concentration of noni fruit extract used was P0 = 0 ml, P1 = 6 ml, P2 = 8 ml, P3 = 10 ml, P4 = 12 ml, P5 = 14 ml. Observations were made on plant height, number of branches, flowering time, fruit number and fruit length. The results of the analysis of variance showed that the response of plants to the influence of noni fruit liquid fertilizer was very good for the age of flowering, number of fruits, fruit length. From the results of the study it can be concluded that the administration of noni fruit liquid organic fertilizer has a very significant effect on the age of flowering and the number of fruits and has a significant effect on the length of eggplant fruit. In the P5 treatment with a concentration of 14 ml gave the best effect, it can be used as an effective dose for growing eggplant plants.

Abstract

The respiration process cannot be separated from horticultural products after harvest. So we need a method to determine the rate of respiration (CO2 production), one of which is the Arrhenius model. The purpose of this study was to predict the CO2 production rate of Barangan bananas using the Arrhenius model. CO2 production of Barangan bananas with different harvesting ages (10 and 11) weeks was measured using the Continuous Gas Analyzer IRA-107 Shimadzu where the banana samples were placed in a respiration chamber, refrigerator for low temperature storage. The measured respiration rate data was then estimated using the Arrhenius model. When the storage temperature increases, the rate of CO2 production will increase. At the harvest age of 11 and 10 weeks the higher the storage temperature, the CO2 production rate will increase. The relationship between CO2 production rate and storage temperature can be solved using the Arrhenius model. The results of the prediction of the Arrhenius model found a coefficient of determination of 0.91-0.94. The k values of 10 weeks of harvest (0.1, 0.24, 0.36) and k of 11 weeks of harvest (0.19, 0.31, 0.49) were calculated using the equation obtained using the Arrhenius model. Value of Ea harvested 33.76 kJ/mol at 10 weeks and 45.83 kJ/mol at 11 weeks. The respiration rate produced at 10 and 11 weeks was different, where the CO2 production rate at 11 weeks at harvest was 77.98 ml/kg.hour with predicted results of 75.76 mm/kg.hour and at 10 weeks at harvest 65.80 ml/kg.hour with a predicted result of 68.21 ml/kg.hour. The results of the Arheniuss model can be used to estimate the CO2 production rate of Barangan bananas during storage
