Abstract

Contrastive analysis in this article is applied on translation involving three different languages, i.e. Indonesian and Javanese (Eastern languages) and English (Western language). Analysis on the data results in the fact that Western has more complete realization of experienced entity, as proved in the complete pronoun for all (first, second, third and also human or non-human). The Eastern doesn’t realize the perceived existence in a complete pronoun. Bahasa is lack of third person for non-human, and Javanese has no practical third person either for human or non-human, as found in the translation data. Eastern is concerned more on the realization of different social and interpersonal relation between speaker, interlocutor and the third person mentioned in the interaction. Thus, Eastern is rich with variation in addressing another among of which is formulated in the H and S for “I”, “you” and “he”.

Abstract

YouTube, a popular video site in the Internet, publishes children stories which can be used for the teaching of English. Many children stories published in YouTube are based on famous fairy tales like “Goldilock and the Tree Bears,” “The Three Little Pigs,” and “The Frog Prince.” Many other children stories, especially those from the Sub-continent, are based on the less famous tales. Examples of these stories include “The Four Friends,” “The Wise Son,” and “Whispering Palms.” Although these children stories are not well-known, with their clear English pronunciation and English subtitles they offer useful resources for the teaching of English. This paper presents the results of content analysis of a sample of 10 children stories from the latter category, that is children stories from the Sub-continent. The analysis was focussed on the themes and moral values. The results of analysis show that the children stories contain everyday life and animal life themes which are close to children life. The children stories also contain moral values which promote the importance of friendship, respect to other people, and love of natural environment. With examples of themes and moral values as such, the children stories from the Sub-continent are relevant with the mission in the development of character. Thus, when used in the English classroom, the video-based children stories from the Subcontinuent published in YouTube not only provide useful materials for the teaching of English, but they also contribute to the development of students’ good character.

Abstract

Abstract

Thailand has undergone continuing changes which affect all areas of education, including ESP education. To cope with all the changes including AEC in 2015, the ESP curriculum needs to be redesigned. This study was therefore to explore the perceptions and attitudes towards the redesigned English Business Communication. This study was based on triangulation. The instruments included an interview and a questionnaire. The subjects were 5 key informants whose main areas of expertise were ESP education, 70 graduates and students of English for Business Communication and 10 entrepreneurs. The informants were interviewed to elicit data for SWOT analysis while the graduates, the students and the entrepreneurs were surveyed through a questionnaire to elicit the data on the curriculum based on competency-based and holistic language learning. The SWOT analysis indicated that the redesigned curriculum should direct towards competence regarding to a combination of contents, skills and professional attitudes needed for effective communication and performance, a preparation for increased competition and changes, a response to internationalization, a shift from generalization to adaptive specialization, and sustainable quality orientation. The survey revealed that the respondents agreed that the curriculum could help prepare for AEC. The implication indicated that the ESP curriculum for changes should direct towards competency and the findings of this study will help facilitate further understanding and implementation of ESP in higher education. Future study should inquire the efficiency of this innovation. Keywords: ESP education, AEC of 2015, curriculum, competition, communication.

Abstract

Materials are generally used to provide a stimulus to writing ordiscussion, as a starting point for language input and analysis, and asideas for organizing lesson activities. In EFL context, materials playparticular important roles because they may be the only contact thatlearners have with English and offer the only opportunities for them to study target texts. One of the important roles of instructionalmaterials is to provide the foundation for learners’ understandings ofwriting and language use. They are often used to present a focus forlanguage, such as to scaffold learners’ evolving control of differenttexts. Materials that assist learners toward producing clear andaccurate sentences and cohesive texts are obviously very importantwhen learning to write. This paper aims at discussing thedevelopment of language scaffolding materials in the writing activitywhich is based on the genre-based approach. “Scaffolding” in this case is the activity to provide any kind of support for students while they are establishing their understanding of a text and their linguistic competence to create the text. The materials provide input, tasks, and instruction that can be used to encourage and as well as to challenge students. The discussion will be focused on developing materials on four main steps of scaffolding for students of English Department. They are language familiarization, model analysis and manipulation, controlled composition, and guided composition.

Abstract

While literature-based instruction has been highly praised for its pedagogical benefits, it on fronts entrenched learning hindrances, both linguistic and cultural in EFL settings. Whether the literature instruction in practice is motivating or demotivating is an issue worthy of concern. In this article the writer surveys attitudes to the integration of language and literature teaching, noting the reservations that have been expressed about it in the past, and which still continue to linger in some quarters..This paper interrogates the role of literature in the language classroom, communicative approaches and emphasis on practical functions of English language. During the 1980`s there was a comeback of interest in literature and language teaching. Linguistics and other contributors suggested that literature should be involved in classes of English for non-native learners but in another pedagogical approach…”the teaching of literature is an arid business unless there is a response, and even negative responses can create an interesting classroom situation”(Long, 1987). The revival of literature is characterized as “literature wearing different clothing.” What kind of literature to use? Texts should be chosen according to students' needs, interests, cultural background, and language level. Selected books must be relevant to the life experiences, emotions, or dreams of learners. This paper suggests choosing a work that is not much above the student's reading proficiency." Interest, appeal, and relevance are all more important." Keywords: language, literature, pedagogical approaches, non-native learners.

Abstract

When one has to teach a language, he should possess a vlew of whatlanguages. One possibility is to view language as a skill. Thereforelanguage learning is comparable to other types of cognitive skillacquisition. ln this case, there is a need for us to understand theconcept of declarative and procedural knowledge. This is similar tothat of knowledge about and knowledge how or knowledge and control(Bialystok, in Johnson, 1994), competence and performance, and usageand use. The first of those terms refers to factual knowledge of alanguage such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation etc., and thelatter to the actual use of the knowledge in real act of communicationsuch as in speaking, reading, listening and writing. The problem ishow these two knowledge can be developed. This paper is inspired byKeith Johnson whose Teaching Declarative and Procedural knowledgesuggest that the strategy to develop the knowledge correspond to whatis commonly called learning and acquisition.

Abstract

Insufficient knowledge of English is one of the major problems that Thai students face in translating from Thai into English and the kinds of knowledge individual students lack are different. To deal with this, instructors need tools that can solve the problems each student is facing. Computer-assisted language learning (CALL), which encourages independent learning, was introduced as a tool to facilitate individual students’ English language learning of all types, including translation. The main purpose of this study was, therefore, to investigate how CALL could improve the Thai students’ translation skill. News headlines convey the gist of the news and have distinctive syntactic properties, newspaper headlines were therefore chosen for this study. The findings reveal that, first; the types of errors that Thai students made in translation were wrong use/translation, omission, and redundant use. In terms of linguistics, they made grammatical, discourse, and lexical errors. Second, noticing in cooperation with CALL can reduce those errors significantly. Third, the students showed their highly positive attitude toward using CALL to improve their translation skills. Fourth, the learner-centered, independent learning method was effective for solving individual students’ problems in translation. Finally, the use of CALL not only enhances the students’ translation skill but also encourages independent language learning effectively.
