Abstract

Up to this present time, self access language learning (SALL) has become an interesting topic for study. Many scholars have devoted their attention to the study on this topic that many of their papers are published in Studies in Self Access Learning journal. Though many studies have discussed this topic, the websites that can be integrated into SALL as a strategic way to ficilitate the autonomous learning remains underresearched. This paper is based on a research looking at the integration of websites into SALL from the perspective of SALL materials in an online SALL centre. It looks at which English language skills are offered as SALL materials and which websites provide SALL materials. The data concerning these two themes were collected from the online visit to to Self Access Centre and INdependent Learning (SACIL) set up at the University of Waikato. SALL materials in SACIL include general language skills, grammar, reading, listening, speaking and pronunciation, writing, punctuation, vocabulary and spelling, IELTS, and study skills and exam preparation which are linked to a large number of websites. With these website-based SALL materials, the learners over the world can finally practice their skill autonomously.Key words: website, self access laguage learning, autonomous learning.

Abstract

This paper aims  to study about the query of femaleness in Indonesian  folktales from  the feminism approach. It  is taken into account due to  women’s subordination that allegedly implies the negation of femaleness. In  particular,  the perpetual story of  Malin Kundang  represents that  owing to  her weakness, a woman is  a subordinate creature.  It happens when Malin  Kundang denies the appearance of her mother after a series of successes he  makes.  Another popular story,  Sangkuriang, even depicts that due to her  beauty, a woman is an  object of sex.  It is  seen when Sangkuriang  proposes Dayang Sumbi  to be his wife because of his inability of recognising her as  his mother after some year banishment. The subordination eventually drives  the two  women to struggle against it  in order to  defend their dignity.  The  mother of Malin Kundang spells him to be a stone and Dayang Sumbi  overtly refuses Sangkuriang’s proposal.  Their  struggles  are of course  valued of the morality for wider public, too.  Despite this, the tales remain a  query of women’s existence, particularly that of femaleness. The truth that a  woman is  biologically and socially  the mother of man is denied in order to  sustain men’s superiority.  By biologically it means that a woman is the  undenied creature for her gifted power of  childbirthing. It  then socially gives her  more power to sustain the generations and the social  relationships.  Furthermore,  it is pivotal to  investigate  the feminist critical  ideas about the essence of femaleness in the Indonesian folktales.

Abstract

It has a long history of teaching English literature and language in this sub-continent. The European colonial rulers introduced this teaching with the motive of serving their own purpose, but paradoxically this teaching has benefited the people of this soil as well in many ways. From the very beginning, the English department of any college or university has been treated as one of the most prestigious departments that have produced the best citizens of this soil. But recently the teaching scenario of these departments in Bangladesh is being severely affected owing to different kinds of changes that have occurred in the social and academic arenas of the country. It is now the demand of the present time that the English departments of the universities of our country should take proper steps to address those problems properly and bring back its reputation. The present study attempts to find out the problems that are affecting the teaching and learning process of these departments and thereby damaging the glory and reputation of them, and also to provide some suggestions to cope with those problems.

Abstract

Teaching is to create environment for students to learn. However, there are times when students become reluctant to learn. One reason is the given learning tasks are irrational. A good example in the ELT context is a common reading comprehension class in which the teacher gets the students to produce oral or written answers to a series of ‘wh’ questions that follow a reading passage. It is too demanding. This paper aims to propose EFL learning tasks that adopt (or adapt) option-based techniques in an attempt to facilitate students’ learning. The paper begins with the rationale behind the adoption of each technique. Then, it discusses things to consider when preparing the tasks. A selected sample of such techniques for ELT will be presented in the last part of the paper. Keywords : Option-base tasks, ELT, techniques

Abstract

Why do we want to be teachers? It is a question that is commonly asked by a lot of peo-ple. William Ayers tries to look back on his moti-vation for being a teacher and attempts to answer the question. The challenges of being a teacher are revisited by looking at the misconceptions in teaching as well as providing the sensible argu-ments to explain the misunderstanding. To Teach: The Journey of A Teacher also challenges the teach-ers’ beliefs in viewing their students and in teach-ing practices in their classrooms. In addition, teachers are encouraged to be more proactive to embrace the policies rather than passively accept the mandated curriculum and other regulations enacted by the policy makers, administrators etc. This book presents a large number of classroom practices that are conducted in unconventional ways.
