Abstract

Abstract

It is widely agreed that the main aim of translation education is to develop students’ translation competence, therefore most researches in translation education contexts focus on identifying the components of transla-tion competence and appropriate curriculum models that integrate these components with suitable teaching strategies. Since translation competence consists of many sub-competences, developing these sub-competences therefore should be the main consideration in translation education. This article is aimed at discussing translation competence in general and how this competence should be de-veloped in a translation class context. Understanding these sort of things is important in formulating the best approach in translation teaching and learning in order to avoid the possible overlap between ‘translation teaching’ and ‘language teaching’, due to the fact that in some cases what the students get in translation class is not ‘how to be a good translator’ but ‘how to be a good language learner’. Further, understanding the nature of students’ translation competence and how this should be developed can give an important conceptual framework in formulating a better translation curriculum which considers all aspects the students need to build their translation competence. Keywords: students, translation, competence, teaching.

Abstract

This research is a case study which employs qualitative method to analyze signs and symbols showed through characterization in the Thumbelina animation movie produced by Warner Bros. and Tiny and Her Necklace visual novel, SPARRING product. Both of them are adapted from Anderson’s Thumbelina. In analyzing those signs and symbols, this research applies Pickering and Hoeper characterization method, specifically method of telling and showing. It also uses Pierce’s semiotics theory of triangle meaning to elaborate the analysis. In semiotics perspective, characterization relates with the use of signs or symbols to describe the characters based on character traits. There are similarities and differences in characterization and signs presented in both movie and visual novel. The similarity is the novel and visual novel designate and symbolize the main character, Thumbelina, as a girl who is powerless and innocent. Meanwhile the man character is described as strong and brave character. The differences of both the adaptation works are concerning with the plot of the story, characterization and sign or symbol presented, and moral value delivered to the audience. The movie is adapted faithfully and the visual novel is adapted loosely from the original short story.  The movie tends to use showing method. On the other hand, the visual novel is likely to use telling method. DOWNLOAD ABSTRACT

Abstract

Some researchers reported that the EFL learners’ ability in understanding and using tense, aspects, and voice of English at the English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang was not academically satisfied yet. Most EFL learners of English Education department were not in “expected” ability in understanding and using appropriate grammatical constructions both in writing and speaking. This condition may give negative ef-fects to the success of EFL learning in Indonesia. It seems that learners’ and teachers’ grammatical con-sciousness on EFL should be academically and practically raised in such a way that they may have basic and better competency standards. One of stylistic clause constructions in English which is called medio-passive has not yet a well-known construction for many teachers and learners of English in Indonesia. This paper briefly discusses how authentic materials may psychologically and academically raise the grammatical con-sciousness on the medio-passive constructions as part competency standards in EFL. Keywords: medio-passive, grammatical consciousness, authentic materials, competency standards

Abstract

This article attempts at exploring the identity formation through children’s fashion, in particular adjusted to famous characters on cartoon movies. By ‘children’ means that they are also subjects to whose identity fashion presumably contributes to shape, which is continuous and has the future. By using some theories about fashion and identity from traditional, modern, and postmodern, supported by the awareness of media’s role on constituting consumerism culture amongst children, the fashion’s role in constructing children’s identity is in details scrutinized. As a result, children’s identity formation through fashion is mostly due to their liking on certain characters on cartoon movies. This liking is influenced by media’s role on constituting their consumerism towards the movie and fashion adoration. However, the influence of media power can not represent completely the ‘truer’ identity since it has history as well as future, which will always revolve in such a never-ending cycle. If it is not a direct contribution, it aids to support the ‘idealized’ identity construction, which is worthily appropriate to postmodern societies.

Abstract

The study is aimed to find out the midwifery students’ need for the materials that they can use to learn English that is appropriate with their field as midwifery students, to describe the design of At-Work Conversation based materials for midwifery Students, and to find out the effectiveness of the materials to increase the students’ ability in making conversation in working situation or in improving the students’ communication skill. This is a Research and Development study (R and D). The researcher used theories of ESP material design Proposed by Hutchinson and Waters and John Munby in conducting the research. The procedure of the research consists of 3 steps namely exploring, designing product, and implementation and evaluation stages. In step one, the researcher conducted need analysis and investigating the existing product for the English teaching in Midwifery program of STIKES Muhammadiyah Gombong. In step 2, the researcher designed syllabus and the first draft of the materials based on the need analysis. In step 3, the researcher tried out the materials, and asked evaluation for the first draft of the materials and revised the first draft based on the evaluation results and wrote the final draft of the materials. Before the application of the materials, the researcher conducted the pre and post test to find out the effectiveness of the designed materials to improve the students’ communication skill. Based on the need analysis the researcher found that the midwifery theme based English materials were needed in line with the competence based curriculum applied in the Midwifery Program. The researcher designed the materials based on the communicative competences for midwifery students in 9 (nine) units namely I am a Midwife, Admission in a Private Midwife Clinic, Checking Vital Signs, Antenatal Care (ANC), Assisting Labor/ Childbearing, Dealing with Post partum women, Newborn Care, Family Planning and reproductive health Counseling and Providing Child health care. Each unit consists of four basic elements (sub titles). The effectiveness on the product can be shown from the improvement scores on the post test. The dependent sample T-Test statistic result shows value Sig (2-Tailed) 0.000 or less than 0.05 which means that score improvements of the pre and post test are significant. The results of the optional questioners given to the experts and students indicate positive mean and mode scores which mean that they mostly agreed with the statements on the questioners and agreed with the designed materials. It can be concluded that the materials made by the researcher are suitable for the midwifery students.   Keywords: Designing English Material, Midwifery English, R and D
