Abstract

This study discusses how the representation of executed Indonesian migrant workers in the case of their executions in Saudi Arabia from 2015 to 2018 in The Jakarta Post news articles. This study is analyzed by using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) which specifically uses the Social Actor Representation (SAR) theory from van Leeuwen (2008). In analyzing the data, this study is also supported by the theory of levels of analysis from Richardson (2007) to analyze the text producers’ lexical choice and the theory of transitivity from Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) to analyze the role allocation. This study shows that The Jakarta Post represents the executed Indonesian migrant workers negatively. It can be seen from the text producers’ ways to include the executed Indonesian migrant workers in the representation. Moreover, The Jakarta Post also uses the words ‘kill’, ‘knife to death’, ‘stab’ etc. to describe the executed Indonesian migrant workers.

Abstract

Nowadays, digital technologies play significant roles in daily life. In educational context, these technologies help learners to gain more knowledge. However, the learners mainly use mobile devices for non-academic purposes, like play game or open the social media applications rather than use the learning applications. In fact, mobile device is an effective media that can make the learners motivated and more interested in learning English. The further research needs to investigate students’ perception on the usage of mobile applications especially in creative writing skill. The participants of the research are 30 senior high school students consisting of 12 males and 18 females. The data is collected by using close-ended questionnaire. This research classified as case study research using randomized sampling. Descriptive data analysis was conducted. The results indicate that mobile applications generally give some advantages in learning English. The perceived benefits of mobile learning comprised opportunities to have ubiquitous learning, have so many exercises, analyze the specific mistakes the learner has made, and also explain the principles behind the correct answer. The learners should maximize the usage of mobile applications positively. The findings have several significant implications for educators, particularly for the use of mobile applications in academic purposes and the strategies to implement mobile learning.

Abstract

The volume provides a comprehensive and multidimensional discussion of multilingualism from a broader framework i.e. sociolinguistic perspective, to a more individual i.e. psycholinguistic perspective, and eventually to a more detailed point of view i.e. neurolinguistics perspective. The chapters in the volume is categorized thematically into four separate parts which make it easier for readers to navigate through the general idea of the volume. The recent and relevant issues in the volume makes it a valuable reading for practitioners and especially researchers wanting to reflect on the practices of multilingualism and use it as a reference for future studies. This volume is also an essential resource for graduate students interested in the field. Nevertheless, another volume following the current one is something to look forward to in order to fill the gaps in terms of updates on the practices of multilingualism especially in the countries or regions not included in this volume. At the moment, on the whole, this volume is a rich and comprehensive resource especially for those interested in the topic of multilingualism.

Abstract

It is widely known the focus of learning of English in Indonesia has always been centred on to how to gain the native speakers’ proficiency and learners’ successfulness in learning English is measured by how their speech production match those of the native speakers’. As international communication is no longer about the native speakers’ competence but the learners’ ability in switching and adjusting their Englishes to different speakers for different purposes, this may now be problematic and irrelevant. Using document analysis method, this paper examines the focus of teaching English in Indonesia during the past and recent curriculums. The finding shows that the curriculums focus on the fossilised forms rather than the communicative strategies and that they are not relevant to evaluate the international intelligibility as contrasted with their emphasis on gaining global participation. The paper therefore suggests the improvement in the curriculum and proposes to incorporate the communicative strategies in the evaluation.

Abstract

The issue of the women’s role in the public sphere has been widely carried out in literary research. However, research on women's participation specifically on economic issues by looking at its theoretical and empirical aspects is still something that is very rarely carried out in literary research. The purpose of this study is to explore in more detail about women's participation in the economy. By using the lens of women's thinking and their participation in the economic field in the concept of women economic participation from Jacqui True, this research focuses on this issue. The method used is analyzing the content of the story that has been done by collecting data by collecting words, sentences, paragraphs related to women's participation in the economy. Furthermore, the data that have been found are analyzed using descriptive analysis methods. The descriptive method of analysis was carried out in several stages. The first stage is data collection which is done by collecting the aspects of women's participation in the economy in general in the data table. From the data table, it is classified according to the economic participation patterns found. The next stage is data analysis by dialogue data from the novel with the theory of women's participation in the economy. The results of this study indicate that women are able to get out of the crisis with their own efforts and hard work. Women also have an important role in the economic sector because they are able to create their own business opportunities so that they can improve their life.

Abstract

The discussion in line with students’ beliefs about language learning is still popular nowadays since it is believed that the student’s beliefs may influence the language learning process, such as motivation, learning style, and strategies, etc. which later ultimately affected the success of language learning. This study was conducted to investigate how students of the English program at IAIN Madura (State Islamic Institute of Madura), Indonesia, express their beliefs about English language learning. This study was implemented in terms of survey study in which the data was primarily gathered by administering the questionnaire entitled Beliefs About Language learning Inventory (BALLI) of Horwitz’s (1987). The questionnaires were administered to students of English teaching and learning program through Google form. About 144 undergraduate students in the first year have participated in this study.  The finding revealed the students’ beliefs in terms of percentage of agreements in all area of BALLI, namely language aptitude, the strategy of learning and communication, the nature of learning language, motivation and expectation in learning, and the difficulty faced by students

Abstract

The present study aims to analyze multiple-choice questions obtained from a trial testing conducted in a state junior high school in Indonesia. The study seeks to reveal the level of difficulty, discriminating power and distractor efficiency of the selected test items by employing item analysis. The result of the study discovers that levels of difficulty on the question items are varied. Some question tended to be easy and moderately difficult while the others are difficult to answer. It also uncovers that, in regard to discriminating power, some questions are well constructed while the others are ambiguously worded that can potentially cause the questions to fail to evaluate the students’ ability. The analysis on distractor efficiency presents information how the chosen multiple-choice questions were frequently constructed with less effective distractors that caused more high achieving students to choose wrong answers.
