Abstract

Abstrak. Penelitian ini adalah tentang akibat perang saudara terhadap kejiwaan masyarakat yang terlibat di dalamnya seperti yang tertuang dalam  novel  Of David and Eva: A Love Story karya Gertrudge Samuels. Hasil analisa menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat yang hidup di tengah-tengah perang selalu merasa khawatir akan nasib mereka. Mereka mengalami stress dengan situasi yang mereka hadapi karena tidak tahu kemana harus pergi dan takut dibunuh para teroris. Mereka kehilangan harapan untuk hidup dalam damai. Para wanita memiliki trauma untuk memiliki anak lelaki karena khawatir nantinya anak-anak tersebut menceburkan diri dalam peperangan. Kata kunci:civil war,psychological effect of war, trauma

Abstract

This article discusses Oka Rusmini’s short story entitled Ketika Perkawinan Harus Dimulai, by utilizing the theory of Feminist - Marxist criticism to identify the portrayal of female characters related to Karl Marx’s class conflict and alienation. The discussion aimed to reveal that woman subordination is the result of social relations, and that men’s efforts to achieve their demands for control of women’s labor and sexual faculties have been delivered in the literary work. The analysis showed that the main character in the story struggled in her life in holding on to her commitment to prove that women can live for herself without being controlled by others. Therefore, Ketika Perkawinan Harus Dimulai is a critique towards patriarchal ideology and oppression towards women.

Abstract

Abstract. This paper is the second part of two articles that report the study of women’s deviation in morality and sensuality in D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lovers (the first part was published in Parafrase, vol. 14, No. 01, February 2014). Two problems are discussed in this study: (1) the kinds of deviation of the women’s character in Lady Chatterley's Lovers by D. H. Lawrence, and (2) the reasons for the deviations in women’s role to happen. The method employed in this study is library research that attempts at tracing the sources of information which are relevant to the study. The theoretical framework of the studies are: literary theory of character, literary theory of morality and ethical framework, literary theory of sensuality, literary theory of conflict and literary theory of deviation. The result of the study shows some kinds of deviation on the female characters, including juvenile delinquency, cheating, adultery, marital and family maladjustment, role problem, discrimination against minority group, bootlicking, bullying, gossiping, and alcoholism. The reasons for the deviation to happen include the immature personality and conflict with the society due to their unreadiness with the massive revolution in England. Keywords: character analysis, women’s deviation, morality, sensuality

Abstract

Abstract. The Prosess of transfer and interference will always follow the second language acquisition. This happens especially at the beginning of acquisition process. Transfer and interference relate to the influence of the first or previous language to the second or target language. Transfer is divided into positive and negative transfer. Positive transfer will happen it there are similarities between the first and the second language. This first will support the process of the second language acquisition. On the other wny around if there are differences between the structure of the first language and the structure of the second one, the negative transfer will happen. This kind of transfer is called interference. Interference will interfere or not support the process of the second language acquisition. Key words: Tranfer, interference, the second language acquisition

Abstract

This article reports a study on the problem of non-equivalence in the Indonesian translation of English adverbs of manner at word level. The aim of this study is to examine the translation of English adverbs of manner for SL (English) into TL (Indonesian) with Mona Baker’s strategy of translation as the theoretical framework. The qualitative descriptive research design is adopted in the study. The data source is David Nicholls’ novel One Day (2009) and its Indonesian translation (2012). The study involved 118 data. Of these,  seventy-seven (77) data are showing equivalence, and forty-one (41) data non-equivalence. As expected, the equivalent data are translated into the word or phrase structure of ber-, se+Adj 2x+ nya, se+Adj+N, per-, dengan+Adj, suffix –nya in the TL text. The focus of analysis is in the non-equivalent data. Two strategies were found:  (1) translation by mission and (2) translation by a more neutral word. The reasons for the omission of the adverbs of manner include: the TL texts have already use other words with similar meaning, sufficient information without their mention, the context has made it clear. The reasons for the second strategy include avoidance of awkward meaning and building a more neutral sense.

Abstract

Abstract. This article discusses the weaknesses of student’s comprehension on theories that they were applying on their research. The result of the analysis were: 1) in applying genetic structuralism the students did not relate the structure of a literary work with the structure of the society on the issue; 2) they did not state clearly their stand points in applying feminist criticism; 3) in applying the political-ideology criticism, the students explained nothing on the author’s strategies to bring out his or her political-ideology; 4) in their applying theory of hegemony, the students were unclearly to choose the interested perspectives; 5) the students were not appropriately to choose the audience of which they addressed, and did not clearly state “the horazone of the reader’s expectation”, “open space”, ; 6) the students did not clearly discussed the text norms, reader’s knowledge and reading experiences, the tensions appearing between fiction and reality in a literary work in applying redear’s reception. Each theory has its own principle characteristics in approaching a literary work. Key words: mastering theories, applying theories, sociological approach, feminism, reader’s reception

Abstract

AbstraK. Motivasi secara alami dapat memicu seseorang untuk melakukan usaha-usaha terbaik mencapai tujuan hidupnya. Penelitian ini berfokus pada motif yang dimiliki oleh Robert dalam karya Dan Brown yang berjudul The Lost Symbol. Tujuan penelitian adalah mencari motivasi Robert untuk mencapai tujuannya dan usaha-usaha yang dilakukannya untuk mencapainya. Penelitian ini menggunakan ancangan kualitatif dan pendekatan intrinsik terhadap unsur karakter untuk menjelaskan tentang perasaan, tindakan dan perilaku. Metode penulisan dalam penelitian ini adalah descriptive confirmative. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa motif Robert adalah menyelamatkan sahabatnya Peter Solomon dari tindakan penculikan dengan penyanderaan.  Peter merupakan figur ayah bagi Robert sehingga ia tidak akan membiarkan Peter mati. Kedua, usaha Robert untuk mencapai tujuannya adalah dengan memecahkan seluruh lambang dan menguraikan sandi-sandi yang muncul dalam piramid, karena mengetahui bahwa Peter adalah anggota tingkat tinggi kelompok Fremasonry. Kelompok tersebut memiliki benda berharga dalam bentuk piramid dan hanya piramidlah yang dapat menuntun Robert menemukan lokasi portal kuno tersebut, yang merupakan benda penting  untuk membebaskan Peter dari si penculik. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Robert harus berusaha keras mencapai tujuannya bahkan tindakan ekstrim sekalipun. Dengan keahliannya sebagai profesor di bidang ilmu lambang, ia mengambil tanggung jawab untuk memecahkan seluruh lambang yang menuntun kepada pembebasan Peter. Setiap tujuan dalam kehidupan dapat dicapai jikalau didukung motivasi kuat untuk mencapainya. Kata Kunci: character analysis, motivation

Abstract

Abstract. Makalah ini membahas studi tentang penerjemahan klausa adjectiva bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia yang terdapat dalam karya Franz Kafka yang berjudul Metamorphosis. Studi berfokus pada penerjemahan unsur-unsur klausa adjektiva seperti penggunaan pronomina relatif dan struktur klausa yang mengikuti pronomina relatif. Studi kualitatif deskriptif ini melibatkan 61 klausa adjektiva. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa pronomina relatif who, which dan that pada umumnya diterjemahkan kepada yang dan bahwa. Analisis pada terjemahan struktur klausa adjektiva menunjukkan bahwa penerjemah melakukan sejumlah perubahan, baik sebagian maupun total, dengan penambahan maupun pengurangan kata. Sebagian perubahan mempengaruhi makna, namun secara umum, perubahan tersebut membantu memahami makna secara lebih baik, dan terjemahan pada umumnya sepadan dengan teks dalam bahasa sumber. Keywords: translation, adjective clause, relative pronouns

Abstract

Abstrak. Artikel ini mendiskusikan arti persahabatan dalam novel Lady karya Thomas Hardy dengan focus utama adalah persahabatan antara dua tokoh utama dalam novel ini, yaitu antara Woody dan Adelaide Makna persahabatan dalam artikel ini mengacu pada teori persahabatan yang dimunculkan oleh Aristoteles, yakni, persahabatan atas dasar yaitu utilitas, persahabatan kenikmatan, dan persahabatan berbudi luhur. Dari analisa dapat disimpulkan; pertama, tentang diskriminasi ras. Diskriminasi ras sebagai akibat dari prasangka terhadap hitam Amerika menciptakan cinta rahasia dalam kehidupan sehari-hari untuk hidup harmonis dengan masyarakat. Kedua, hubungan antara Adelaide dan Woody mengejawantahkan persahabatan  yang  sejati. Kata kunci: discrimination, friendship, friendship based on utility, friendship based on pleasure, friendship based on goodness
