Abstract

Japanese Jargon which is also known as a wakamono kotoba term is a dynamic language style which will change over time and become a culture in youth daily life in communicating with others. There are many words that are formed from wakamono kotoba. Therefore to make it easier the usage of each word from wakamono kotoba, the words are divided into groups. This study aimed to know the types of wakamono kotoba in Kimi No Todoke comic volume 24. This study used descriptive qualitative method with linguistic approach. The analysis were done by elaborating and analysing types of wakamono kotoba that have been grouped in a descriptive form according to the related theory. The result of the study showed that: from 40 wakamono kotoba that have been found in a data source can be categorized into 7 types, they are: 1) in a form of abbreviation from 2 or more vocabularies; 2) clipping the word; 3) have no change in form both have change in meaning from the original meaning; 4) use the word from katakana ‘go’; 5) use the abbreviated word from katakana ‘go’; 6) combined Japanese language with the word from katakana ‘go’; and 7) there is sound change. Abstract

This research aims to obtain an outline of the translation techniques used in the translation of deixis. The focus of it is on the techniques of deixis translation that used by translators. The qualitative approach used in this research with content analysis method. There are 284 data on the deixis translation which shows the use of translation techniques as a major problem in this. The result of this is found nine types of the translation techniques, namely the technique of generalization, amplification, borrowing, literal translation, linguistic amplification, particularisation, reduction, modulation, and transposition. The type of translation with literal translation techniques occupies the most widely used of the translator. That is, in the deiksis translation, translators use more word-by-word translation, becouse deixis occupies more units of words or phrases in a sentence. Abstract

A text of drama is importance and an integral part of any drama perfomarnces. However, it seems that it has obtained lack of appreciation and has been separated from a performance. It is needed only when it will be performed. This article tries to explore the ideas of deconstruction in Akhudia’s Grafito. Deconstructive method proposed three steps in its reading a text, that is verbal stage, textual, and meaning stages. On the verbal stage, the reading of the text is inteded to uncover the paradox and contradiction critically. On the textual stage, the reading is focused on finding the meaning of the whole text. The meaning stage will trace the linguitic meaning of the text. In Grafito, one can read Akhudiat shows a rebellion and an opposition toward the social construction such as religous institution. The characters are given various characteristics, such as being capable to create setting, properties, being shadows, or inside voices which suggest unconvensional dimention propose a paticular artistic value. Abstract

Habitus is a concept from Pierre Bourdie (1977), which is agent’s structural base in conducting practices or actions This study is focused on habitus and the construction structure in David, the main character in Dave Pelzer’s A Child Called It and The Lost Boy. Habitus is shown in David’s actions and attitude when dealing with people around him. The method used in this research is descriptive method, which aims to objectively describe the subject which is the subject of science by collecting basic descriptive information needed to understand the nature of the subject. The study reveals that David’s habitus includes low self esteem, inferior feeling, continuous suspicious and difficulties to trust others, rude utterances and theft; which are the results of internalization of his alcoholic and rude mom’s parenting style. David’s mother treated him cruelly; which ranges from physical abuse (hit, stabbed with a knife, and burned), psychological abuse (threat and forced to say bad things about himself), and neglect (left starving, hurt, and isolated). Abstract

This study uses psychoanalysis concept, namely neurotic anxiety by the main character in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, a novel by Roald Dahl. This study finds the character’s personality, Willy Wonka in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’s novel becomes neurotic anxiety who influenced of the three systems of personality, there are Id, Ego, and Superego from his traumatic experienced. This happens because his life principle which it has to be followed defence mechanism to overcome the conflict he experienced. Unfortunately, he thinks that the process of the competition is the best way to reduce his anxiety for a while. This study is expected to contribute to the understanding of the human mind and significance object between literature and the psychological condition. Abstract

The study discusses the strategies used by ludruk groups as the survival strategies of Ludruk as a traditional form of art in Surabaya during the New Order. In Surabaya, there are at least three popular Ludruk groups: the groups of Ludruk RRI Surabaya, Cak Kartolo, and Irama Budaya. The success of Ludruk RRI Surabaya can be seen from their continuity and their success at socializing the government programs; the success of Kartolo is marked by 95 tapes which are well received; while the success of Irama Budaya is proven with the great number of audience (around 500) in 1998-2003. The analysis method applied is Pierre Bourdieu’s genetic structuralism method. Based on the study, it is found that the strategies used by the ludruk groups in Surabaya are playing the role as the government’s art media, optimalizing dagelan (comedy), and giving space for the minority while maintaining convension. Abstract

There are two tendencies in comparative literary study. First, in comparative literary study, both of literatures from two countries are compared for certain points (theme, stylistic, setting, characterization, etc). Second, comparative literary study raises literary critical appreciation from other discipline perspectives (psychology, sociology, philosophy, religion, anthropology, politic). In this article, both tendencies are applied at once. The focus of this paper is about the theme in novels Harimau Harimau Muchtar Lubis and Moby Dick Herman Melville. It uses existentialism philosophical approach and criticism literature. The finding of the research, if we compare them, the existentialism theme in Harimau Harimau and Moby Dick has similarities that human being has freedom to determine her/his choice in her/his life for the future. Yet, what choice that she/he takes, it has a risk that she/he must face with responsibility as a human being. The pursuits of the responsibility caused anxiety, frightened, suffering as what the characters face in these novels. Abstract

In Japanese language, the term goroawase is known as a word play that uses numbers. The use of goroawase in Japanese varies greatly. In this article we can see 7 (seven) types of goroawase that are used in Japanese media, (1) as word play, (2) as an abbreviation, (3) as superstition, (4) as the arrangement of celebration day's names, (5) as a way to memorize telephone numbers, (6) as a way of memorize historic years and dates, and (7) as a way of memorize scientific numbers. Abstract

Defamiliarization is a device of art to make things unfamiliar by a process of making strange (estrangement) to increase the difficulty and length the perceptions. The Little Prince, a novella by Antoine De Saint Exupery presents the defamiliarized characters which appear strange and unfamiliar. To recognize them, the character’s familiarity should be identified by the schemata study before came into defamilarization. Experiencing the artfulness of object will give the reader chance to discover any kind of perceived meaning without inhibition for their judgments. This study uses qualitative method in terms of close reading technique in scrutinizing Antoine de Saint Exupery’s The Little Prince. The discussion is conducted through its characters. Although those device are common objects, they appeared strange to open the reader’s mind into any possible assumptions, meaning, and interpretation.
