Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of Islamic education according to Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and t to examine its relationship with reason and the Al-Qur’an. This research employs a literature research method by collecting data through the process of text analysis from various literary sources. The results of the research show that the concept of Islamic education offered by al-Attas is ta'dib. Ta'dib can be understood as an effort to influence and instill (inculcate) manners in humans which is carried out through the educational process. This concept focuses on instilling manners in students so that they are able to become good and civilized human beings. In order to be a good and civilized human being, a person must be able to differentiate between good and bad. In this context, al-Attas explained that the reason and the values of the Al-Qur'an are two important things so that humans can differentiate between what is ḥaqq and bāthil. Al-Attas revealed that reason and the Al-Qur’an are two things that complement each other.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the concept of moral development according to Ibn Miskawaih with behavior modification in Western psychology. This topic is intriguing due to the similarities and differences between the two that can be scientifically explained. The research uses a qualitative method with a library research approach. The findings indicates that Ibn Miskawaih's moral development or ethics is based on the Al-Qur’an and philosophy, focusing on the soul’s drive to engage in good behavior without considering specific benefits, in order to achieve life perfection and happiness. According to him, the ethical hierarchy consists of al-khaiyr (goodness), al-sa‘ādah (happiness), and al-faḍīlah (virtue). In Ibn Miskawaih’s view, character formation is a potential for noble morality that can be achieved through the principle of the middle path (al-wasaṭ), influenced by internal factors such as the soul and external factors such as the environment. Meanwhile, behavior modification in Western psychology is based on theories by Western scholars that emphasize observable behavior resulting from stimulus-response and aim to shape planned behavior through learning and reinforcement processes. The comparison between the two reveals differences in basic thinking, characteristics, factors influencing behavior change, and goals. However, there are similarities in the strategies used to shape character, namely through training, habituation, reinforcement, and modeling roles within the environment.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze and integrate the concepts of faith (iman) and morality (akhlak) in the thought of Said Nursi, as well as to explore his ideas in depth through a direct study of his works. The main objective is to understand the role of faith as the foundation of morality and how morality serves as a tangible manifestation of faith. This study uses a qualitative research method with a literature review approach. The primary source examined is Kulliyāt Rasāil al-Nūr, Said Nursi's masterpiece, along with other supporting literature. The results indicate that, according to Nursi, faith is not merely a belief, but also has a concrete impact on an individual's moral behavior. Good morality reflects true faith, while maintaining a noble character further strengthens one's faith. Furthermore, from an Islamic perspective, morality is not only a social norm but also an act of worship that brings the individual closer to Allah. This study also reveals that, in Nursi's view, excessive materialism and worldly indulgence can weaken faith and corrupt morality. Conversely, good morals bring inner peace and happiness as a result of strong faith. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that faith and morality are two interrelated aspects that cannot be separated in the formation of individuals and the creation of a harmonious society. The integration of the two serves as a critical foundation to face the challenges of modern life.

Abstract

This article explores the Sufi thought of Ahmad Khatib al-Sambasi, an influential 19th-century Nusantara Sufi, and the characteristics of his Tarekat Qadiriyah wa Naqshabandiyah (TQN). Using a qualitative approach and library research methodology, the study analyzes al-Sambasi's works, particularly Fatḥ al-‘Ārifīn, alongside secondary literature on TQN and Sufism. The research employs documentation for data collection and content analysis for interpretation. Findings reveal that al-Sambasi developed a comprehensive spiritual system grounded in tauḥīd and ma‘rifah, featuring systematic dzikr methods and spiritual practices. His teachings successfully integrate Syarī‘ah and Ḥaqīqah, emphasizing a balance between exoteric and esoteric dimensions. The TQN's distinctive features include a hierarchical structure, specific rituals like bai‘at and talqīn dzikr, and strict ethical guidelines for followers. Al-Sambasi's significant contribution lies in adapting classical Sufism to the Nusantara context, fostering widespread acceptance in the region. The study concludes that al-Sambasi's thought offers a balanced and comprehensive spirituality model, relevant both in his time and in contemporary Islamic spirituality.

Abstract

There are different approaches to Islamic Studies, one of which is the psychological approach. This approach focuses on the psychological aspects that influence the study of Islamic Studies. In its development, the psychological approach has received various criticisms, both normative and empirical, from both classical and contemporary perspectives. This research aims to explore and develop the psychological approach in Islamic Studies more comprehensively, both theoretically and practically. The research method used is library research by analyzing various literatures. Primary sources in this research include classical and modern books and articles related to psychological approach in Islamic studies. Meanwhile, other books and articles relevant to this research are used as secondary sources. The results of this study show that there is a strong connection between theory and practice in the psychological approach in Islamic studies. However, there are also aspects that are not fully aligned between the theoretical framework and its application, both in the normative and empirical areas. The psychological approach in Islamic studies has a close relationship between theory and practice, although there are fundamental differences in understanding human psychological dynamics. Theoretically, the Islamic psychological approach is different from general psychology, while empirically, its application still faces challenges in understanding human psychological dynamics. However, this approach still offers advantages in the integration of knowledge, contextual understanding, and more comprehensive data-based analysis.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze and compare the perspectives of Thomas F. Wall and Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas on the concept of natural law, highlighting their differing philosophical traditions. Wall, in “Critical Thinking”, presents a secular understanding of natural law, arguing that it is a human construct originating solely from human reasoning, independent of any divine authority. In contrast, al-Attas, in “Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam”, asserts that natural law, or sunnatullah, is divinely ordained, reflecting God's will in governing the universe while involving human participation. This study employs a philosophical approach grounded in the Islamic worldview to examine and contrast their interpretations, utilizing content analysis to systematically interpret the key arguments in their respective works. The findings reveal a fundamental divergence between the two perspectives: Wall perceives natural law as an innate principle recognized by human reason as the highest moral and ethical authority, whereas al-Attas views it as a manifestation of divine order that governs creation. This contrast underscores the broader epistemological differences between the Western secular and Islamic metaphysical worldviews in understanding the foundation and authority of natural law.
