Abstract

Islam considers the reason has a noble position in religion. Reason is man's tool of achieving knowledge, sometimes even the reason becomes the source of knowledge, both religious or general science. In the development of the world of Islamic thought, the issue of reason and its relationship with religion is still a relevant issue to be discussed up to now. The problems between reason and religion are the first, in Islam, there are some people or groups who are excessive in using one of them, and the second, in the West people are more inclined to do a dichotomy between knowledge that comes from reason and knowledge that comes from religion, even refused one of them. In this case, Taha Abdurrahman with his theory of reason and its relationship in religion tries to put the reason in its proper place and function, because according to Taha reason reaches perfection in his actions when the mind interacts with religious teachings because the reason and religion has characteristics at-ta'wan wa at-ta'dhud bainahima. By using a descriptive-analytical approach, this journal intends to discuss and research reason and its relation with religion according to Taha Abdurrahman.

Abstract

This article discusses Imam Al-Ghazali’s views on political ethics and governance. This type of research is literature using analytical methods. The primary source used by researchers is one of Imam Al-Ghazali’s works, namely “Al-Tibbr al-Masbūk fī Naṣīḥah al-Mulk” and several other relevant works. This article answers the problem when in the 16th century, there was a separation between ethics and politics in the West which was pioneered by an Italian statesman named Niccolo Machiavelli which resulted in that the mindset of the government was based on its acceptance of the political system of its time. This discussion becomes important as a response to debates and dialectics about the importance of ethics in politics. This study concludes that Al-Ghazali proposed that the government system be made up of a board of directors in carrying out every government program in order to create productivity and effectiveness in running the government. The Diwan should have three institutions in the country: the deliberative council, the judiciary and the ministerial body. In addition, ethics needs to be included in the political system, this is a critique of scholars who reject ethical participation in politics. Al-Ghazali advised the rulers about the importance of ethics in politics and government. It is formulated in seven principles namely fairness, competence, humility, honesty, responsiveness, sincerity, and gentleness.

Abstract

This article examines a branch of philosophy that answers practical questions about human action concerning their values, principles and norms that determine whether an action is appropriate or not, good or not, beneficial or not for oneself, namely ethics. The problem is that in many classical literatures, this branch of ethics always discusses happiness or eudaimonism; that is, the extent to which one’s understanding of happiness, pleasure, and enjoyment is achieved. The question is what is the relationship between happiness and ethics, and why is it an important issue? The research originating from the textual study of two manuscript texts, namely Akmaluddīn an-Nakhjuwānī's work entitled “Syarḥ al-Isyārāt” on Ibn Sīnā's work entitled “Al-Isyārāt wa al-Tanbīhāt,” will address this issue by analyzing the content within the texts. The results of this study reveal that the ethicalphilosophy presented is deeply influenced by Islamic nuances, although the Peripatetic traditionis also strongly present in its perspective. It can be said that the described concept of ethics is highly eschatological. As an implication, an-Nakhjuwānī's ethical philosophy also reveals the spiritual side of Ibn Sīnā, who is generally known as a highly rational philosopher. This research also uncovers that an-Nakhjuwānī's ethical discourse displays more religious terms compared to Ibn Sīnā.
