Abstract

The propagation of Islamic faith, or da’wah, in Indonesian archipelago had gone through a lengthy historical process. Various methods and approaches were taken to consolidate its place among the Indonesian people who were long-time believers of animism, dynamism,Hinduism, and Buddhism among others. One of such methods is the Sufi-based da’wah, which played a vital role in dissemination of Islamic faith through acculturation of its valuesinto the older beliefs. The purpose of this research is to study the Indonesian sufi community’s da’wah endeavor and the religio-cultural challenges they had faced. With the descriptive analytic and historical methods approaches, this research identifies and analyzes the works of prominent Indonesian sufi scholars which had contributed to the widespread acceptance of Islamic faith and its values. The conclusion of this research has found that there is indeed a significant influence coming from Indonesian sufi scholars toward the propagation of Islamic faith and its values, along with its consolidation and preservation therein. Thus, the result can be regarded as an effort to better understand the role of tasawuf in propagating the Islamic faith in Indonesia. Hopefully the result of this research shall deepen the understanding of the role of tasawuf in encouraging the dissemination of Islamic faith in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal and analyze the works and thoughts of Snouck Hurgronje's orientalism in Indonesia. Hurgronje was the most influential orientalist in formulating the Dutch Colonialism policy in Indonesia. Unlike most orientalists who only studied Islam through literature studies, Hurgroje also penetrated directly into the Muslim community and mingled with them, he even managed to infiltrate Muslim intellectuals by pretending to convert to Islam. This research is a qualitative study that uses literature to collect data from books, journals, and other documents related to Hurgronje's thoughts. This research found that there is a deep relationship between orientalism and colonialism as seen in Hurgronje's works. Among his most phenomenal orientalist thoughts is his thesis that the Hajj ritual in Islam is a pagan legacy. Hurgronje also made a strategic move in the Aceh War by advising the Dutch East Indies government to separate religion and politics (secularization). According to Hurgronje, if Islam was integrated with politics, it would encourage people's resistance, which was dangerous for the Dutch. In addition, Hurgronje also developed the Receptie theory which aims to dwarf Islamic law and uphold traditional law to clash the two.

Abstract

The study of knowledge in Islam is very important. Knowledge in modern times is considered lacking in explaining phenomena in this era. The purpose of writing this article is to analyze the Islamic perspective on science, including the concepts, classifications, and roots of science. This research method is qualitative with a literature study approach originating from e-journals, books and trusted media. The results of this study state that first, the concept of science according to Islam does not only discuss physical aspects, but also metaphysical aspects. Science must also have objectivity, meaning that it can be accepted by many people and not be influenced by individual thoughts. Second, Islam broadly classifies knowledge into two, namely fardu ain knowledge and fardu kifayah knowledge. Figures of Muslim scientists such as Al-Farabi and Ibn Nadhim divided world knowledge into more detail. Third, Knowledge in Islam comes from the Al-Qur'an, Hadith, intellect, and intuition. How to obtain this knowledge can be through revelation, five senses, reason, and heart or intuition. Fourth, Modern science in the West began to develop, and Western society relinquished the influence of the church to adopt a modern way of thinking that emphasized rationality and empirical evidence. Western thought considers religion and science to be separate, viewing this division as a hindrance to progress. However, in the Islamic tradition, religious and secular powers are not divided

Abstract

The discourse on the dichotomy of modern science and Islamic science is an interesting topic of discussion and is always debated by Muslim scientists. Some of them, namely Ismail Raji al-Faruqi and Amin Abdullah, are trying to respond to and solve problems that occur in the scientific realm. Al-Faruqi initiated the Islamization of science which seeks to unify the two sciences (science and Islam). Likewise, Amin Abdullah with his integration-interconnection paradigm also offers an open dialogue between the two sciences. Then this research aims to look at the structure of thought between the two figures mentioned, as well as looking for common threads related to the similarities and differences in the ideas of science integration being promoted. This research uses library research methods through several textual sources related to the topic discussed, primarily in the form of books by the two figures studied, and secondary in the form of scientific articles that have related themes. The results of this article are: 1) The Islamization of al-Faruqi's knowledge leads to the relevance between science and Islam, science is Islamized through twelve concrete steps based on the concept of monotheism. 2) Amin Abdullah's ideas regarding integration-interconnection can be seen from the spider web framework which emphasizes mastery of various sciences, both modern science and Islamic science. 3) The similarities in thinking between the two can be seen through the spirit in answering scientific dichotomies. The difference is, that al-Faruqi emphasized mastery of modern knowledge (science) to then be converted to Islam to conform to the pattern of monotheistic teachings. Meanwhile, Amin Abdullah's ideas emphasized mastery of general science and Islam. Abstract

This article aims to examine and formulate a model for integrating religious knowledge with general science, focusing on the ontological, epistemological, and axiological foundations. In the context of modern secularism, which has led to the separation of religion and scientific knowledge, this research seeks to restore spiritual values within scientific inquiry and integrate the two disciplines to create knowledge that is not value-free. The research method used by the author is a qualitative approach with a type of library research with data collection methods by conducting documentation studies by examining primary and secondary sources in the form of books and scientific articles. The results of this study concluded that the integration of science is an effort to combine religious science and general science by incorporating religious values into it and looking for similarities between the two. Integration is done to make science not free of moral values and create good human beings who are in accordance with the two functions of human creation, namely as khalifah and good servants of Allah. The philosophical bases of science integration include ontological, epistemological and axiological bases. From the ontological basis, the relationship between the highest reality, namely God, and the lowest reality, namely creatures, has a close and inseparable relationship. Epistemologically, the source of general and religious knowledge comes from one source, namely God, who then provides means or tools of knowledge in the form of reason and the five senses, as a tool for obtaining knowledge and Islamic epistemology recognizes the means of knowledge in the form of intuition to achieve metaphysical-immaterial knowledge, where this method of intuition is in the form of inspiration and revelation. And axiologically, the integration of general science and religious science gives birth to science that is not value-free, so that it can make the development of science consistent with moral values in accordance with religion and the Qur'an, which gives birth to benefits in the world and the hereafter in the form of material, intellectual and spiritual enjoyment in humans who are a unity between body and spirit.
