Abstract

This paper discusses relations of democracy enforcement and religious freedom in the pandemic era of Covid-19 in Indonesia, especially Muslim. In the "new normal" climate, some believe that perhaps one of the best ways to stop the spread is to impose lockdowns. The centralized style of government typically adopts this policy. However, Indonesia does not implement this policy with various considerations. However, on the other hand, when democratic countries such as Indonesia want to impose restrictions on religious activities, this regulation seems a religious freedom limitation. In several cases at the beginning of Covid-19 that hit Indonesia in March, it was often connected to clusters of religious events involving many people. While the policy of restricting worship often drew protests from religious adherents. Against the backdrops of religious politics as the impact of the 2019 democratic party in the Presidential Election, this paper looks at how this phenomenon has become tremendously politicized and has a common thread between those who refused, ignored, and accepted, and even got involved to support government policy. Herein lies the government's importance in managing its citizens' awareness to fight Covid-19 without intending to restrict religious freedom and stopping the politicization of religion.

Abstract

This study discusses the accuracy of the final voter list (DPT) with a focus on the process of classifying voter data. At the stage of determining the DPT by the Riau KPUD, it was found that 51,469 voters Did Not Meet the Requirements (Tidak Memenuhi Syarat/TMS) registered as permanent voters. On the other hand, there are still many potential voters who are 17 years old or married and are not registered as voters. This phenomenon is a problem that has always been an evaluation material for every general election organizer. This research was conducted using a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were obtained by means of in-depth interviews with informants and collecting literature related to research issues. As a reference for analysis, this study uses the theory of democracy and the political rights of voters. The data were processed using an etic-emic approach so that a comprehensive analysis was found. The main argument of this research is that the classification and updating of data is an important step in determining the DPT to ensure that every citizen has good political rights.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the legal consequences caused by the marriage bond between a man and a woman, namely for the sake of law there is a mixture of assets between the two. This mixing of treasures led to the emergence of common property. However, there are exceptions to this mixture of assets, namely assets obtained before marriage, assets obtained based on gifts and assets obtained based on inheritance. So even though the mixing of assets occurs by law, it does not mean that this situation cannot be avoided. The existence of a marriage agreement that explicitly separates the assets of husband and wife in marriage. By entering into a Marriage Agreement, the two prospective husband and wife are entitled to prepare some deviations from the laws and regulations regarding the association of assets, as long as the agreement does not violate good morals or general rules and as long as all provisions are respected. This article will analyze and discuss the development of regulations regarding Marriage Agreements in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study seeks to describe the development of civil society. In the realm of political science, the role of civil society is one of the benchmarks for the development of democracy. In Indonesia, the transition period was marked by the collapse of Suharto's New Order, accompanied by the rapid growth of civil society. However, there has not been much research on the development of civil society in the local sphere. This research seeks to fill the gaps related to civil society development and democracy in the local sphere by focusing on Bali. The study used a qualitative method, particularly participant observation and interview. This study finds, first, the increasing tension between civil society actors and the state. Its shown in the state's efforts to limit the expression of civilian dissatisfaction with state policies. Second, the state's role is increasing in the life of civil society in Bali. In the context of Bali, Perda No. 4 of 2019 on Desa Adat shows recognition for indigenous peoples in Bali. The case of Bali displays the uniqueness of how the customs of the Balinese people, particularly in the civil society arena, influence the relationship with the state. It shows the inequality of power relations between the state and society. It confirms that tension between the state and civil society strengthened after policies that increased the state's intervention in civil society.

Abstract

The Internet and social media have been increasingly adopted by political entities across the globe. The consequences of such adaptations on the Indonesia’s nation-state narrative and liberal democratic norms have been under-researched however. This article argues that in democratic countries, such adaptations are likely to pave the way for the emergences of disinformation order and social media algorithmic trap. Within the specific context of Indonesia’s democracy, these disinformation order and social media algorithmic trap are likely to polarize political spheres and jeopardize not merely Indonesia’s united nation-state narrative, but also Indonesia’s liberal democratic norms that evolved since the post-reform era. To evaluate such propositions, this article adopts a desk study and selects Jakarta’s 2017 Gubernatorial Election as a study case. Learning from these desk study and study case, this article proposes the following arguments. To manage the consequences of disinformation order and social media algorithmic trap on politics and democracy, we need formulate new political communication and policy research agenda based on the following dictum: who get lost by what/whom in which channel/medium and with what effects. Taking such effort may give us an opportunity to keep the current Indonesia’s united nation-state narrative prevailing and liberal democratic norms flourishing.

Abstract

Democracy operates through the mechanisms of society. Today, technology has become an integral part of societal development, has permeated many aspects of life, and is expected to play an important role in democracy. The government, activists, and academics have all advocated for the use of technology in government, known as e-government. While there is academic debate about its impact on democracy, this article believes it is critical to place impact after development. This viewpoint is useful for engaging in academic debate. Assuming that each stage has its own timetable, this article asks, "What stage is e-government at right now?" Looking at the indicators measured by various agencies and positioning them as shared awareness of e-government, it is possible to conclude that today is the stage of e-government development. The answer may serve as a reminder to academics researching the impact of e-government.

Abstract

Advancing women’s political interests is not an easy activity to do at least due to two factors.  First, women political representation is low both in national and local level.  Second, women’s political interests is yet acknowledged as  important subject compared to other more salient problems such as economic and political issues.  This paper aims to present a critical analysis of how women put forward their political interests in local level through local legislations.  I use mainly network institutionalism as my theoretical analytical tool. Data came from focussed group discussions (FGDs), interviews, participant observations, as well as documents from and with  women groups in executive and legislative bodies, women  non-government organizations (NGOs), women community based organizations (CBOs), professional groups, and academics.    I argue that despite their differences, women groups were able to set a relatively coherent political agendas in local level in Lampung, Indonesia.  This was shown by their ability to control sub-group identifications and develop a common identity with their slogan “united women will never be defeated” to work together for the success of their political interest advocacy.  It was also shown by their ability to develop mutual obligations and reciprocities for the success of the advocacy of the new Lampung Province Regulation on Gender-mainstreaming of Development.

Abstract

This study aims to provide an overview of how the relationship between stock and bond market in Asia when a crisis occurs (in this case the 2008 global crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic) using the DCC-GARCH method to prove the flight-to-quality phenomenon in Asia (China, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and India). The results showed that during the 2008 global crisis, the flight-to-quality phenomenon happened in Thailand where the correlation between stock returns and government bonds in that country became increasingly negative during the crisis period, indicating that there was a shift in investment from stocks to government bonds. In addition, this research also proved that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the flight-to-quality phenomenon was also proven to occur in Malaysia.
