Abstract

The waters of Lampung Bay have high potential resources for threadfin bream (Nemipterus sp.). This fish has significant economic value as a diverse food ingredient. However, currently, the body size of threadfin bream found tends to be uniform and even smaller due to continuous overfishing. The research was conducted to assess the status of utilization of threadfin bream resources in the waters of Lampung Bay based on five important aspects, namely ecology, economics, social, technological and institutional. The research was carried out in May 2023 at Lempasing Fishing Port, Bandar Lampung City, with data collection through observation and interviews. Data analysis used the multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) method using the Rapfish (rapid appraisal for fisheries) application to evaluate the sustainability of the use of threadfin bream. The results of the analysis show that the sustainability index value for the use of threadfin bream in the waters of Lampung Bay is as follows: ecological dimension 48.59; economic dimension 36.80; social dimension 75.00; technology dimension 49.91; and ethical dimension 61.64. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the use of threadfin bream in the waters of Lampung Bay is quite sustainable, with an average index value of 54.39.Keywords: Ecological dimension, multi-dimensional scaling, Rapfish, sustainability index.

Abstract

Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) is a euryhaline carnivorous fish species. The nursery phase often poses a major challenge in its aquaculture development. Common issues at this stage include stress-prone fry, feed residues that degrade water quality, high stocking densities, disease outbreaks, and low feed quality, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies and mortality. A potential solution is supplementing feed with commercial organic sulfur compounds. These compounds are chemical groups containing sulfur atom chains and naturally occur in garlic. This research uses an experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of 4 treatments and repeated 3 times. The treatments consisted of P0 (Control), P1 (Commercial organic sulfur compounds at 1 ml/kg), P2 (Commercial organic sulfur compounds at 3 ml/kg), P3 (Commercial organic sulfur compounds at 5 ml/kg). The experiment was conducted over 25 days. Data analysis was performed using One Way ANOVA with Tukey’s post-hoc test. The results showed that barramundi (L. calcarifer) fed with P1 (1 ml/kg organic sulfur compound supplementation) exhibited the best growth performance with absolute length growth (5.79 cm), absolute wight growth (4.96 g), specific growth rate (0,1985%). However, the supplementation had no significant effect on survival.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect doses of Bacillus sp. Probiotics on the survival rate of white snapper (Lates calcarifer) larvae.  The research was conducted at the Gondol Research Institute for Mariculture, Bali, over a 20-day period using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments and three replications: P0 (control, without probiotics), P1 (3 mg/L), and P2 (5 mg/L). Observed parameters included water quality (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate, temperature, pH, salinity, DO), total bacterial count (TBC), survival rate (SR), larval length, and hatching rate (HR). The results showed that the administration of Bacillus sp. probiotics had a significant effect on the survival rate of white snapper larvae (p < 0.05). Based on ANOVA, there were significant differences in SR between treatments. The Bonferroni post hoc test revealed that treatment P2 (5 mg/L) was significantly different from both the control (P0) and P1 (3 mg/L), with P2 producing the highest average SR of 84%, compared to P1 at 70.3% and the control at 50.3%. Meanwhile, probiotic administration did not have a significant effect (p > 0.05) on water quality parameters or larval length. The highest larval length was also recorded in treatment P2, with an average of 1.5 cm on day 20. The use of probiotics contributed to the reduction of toxic compounds such as nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia, and helped stabilize the rearing water environment. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the administration of Bacillus sp. probiotics at a dose of 5 mg/L is the optimal dosage for improving the survival rate of white snapper larvae and maintaining the quality of the aquaculture environment.

Abstract

Food safety is a crucial aspect of vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture, particularly regarding the use of chemicals that may leave harmful residues. This study aims to analyze the compliance of chemical usage in vannamei shrimp farming in Tuban Regency with food safety standards. Data were collected through interviews with farmers and fish health analysts, as well as laboratory testing of shrimp samples from several pond locations. The analysis results showed that all samples from the tested sites were compliant, meaning they met the permitted residue limits. Therefore, it can be concluded that shrimp farming practices in this region have been carried out responsibly and in accordance with prevailing safety standards. This study may serve as a reference for the development of guidance and monitoring efforts toward sustainable shrimp farming in other regions.

Abstract

This study was conducted to scientifically evaluate the effect of vitamin C supplementation in commercial feed on the growth performance and survival rate of cantang grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus × E. lanceolatus), a high-value aquaculture commodity in Indonesia. The experimental design employed was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments: commercial feed without vitamin C (control), feed supplemented with 20,000 ppm of vitamin C, and feed supplemented with 40,000 ppm of vitamin C, each with three replicates. The key parameters observed included weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and survival rate (SR) of the fish during a 30-day rearing period. The results revealed that the addition of vitamin C to the commercial feed had a statistically significant effect on both weight gain and SGR (p < 0.05), where the 40,000 ppm treatment produced the highest mean weight gain (7.12 grams) and SGR value (0.0765%). Although survival rate did not differ significantly among treatments (p > 0.05), the group receiving 40,000 ppm of vitamin C still achieved the highest survival rate of 100%. Water quality parameters, including temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and ammonia, remained within optimal ranges throughout the experiment in accordance with marine aquaculture standards. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that vitamin C supplementation, particularly at a concentration of 40,000 ppm, is highly effective in promoting growth performance and maintaining high survival rates of cantang grouper under controlled aquaculture conditions.

Abstract

Intensive vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) farming using a fermentation-based system offers an innovative solution to environmental management and production efficiency. This study was conducted over one cultivation cycle (80 days) in six ponds operated by CV Tambak 58, North Bali, integrating periodic probiotic fermentation. Key parameters evaluated included growth (ABW, ADG), feed efficiency (FCR), survival rate (SR), water quality, and microbiological stability. Results showed high productivity (up to 2.53 kg/m²), low FCR (1.13–1.40), and SR >85%, accompanied by stable planktonic and microbial communities. These findings indicate that fermentation-based systems reduce environmental stress and disease risks while enhancing the sustainability of intensive shrimp aquaculture

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems on Pahawang Island are subjected to biotic, abiotic, and anthropogenic pressures that may compromise vegetation health. However, studies investigating organ damage based on the extent and severity of infestation in this area remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of mangrove organ damage, the extent and severity of infestation, and the factors contributing to vegetation damage. Data were collected using a quantitative descriptive approach through field surveys. Observations were conducted in 23 plots across three sampling stations representing sparse (R. mucronata), moderate (R. mucronata), and dense (R. apiculata) mangrove stands. The assessed parameters included types of damage, the percentage of damaged organs, the extent of infestation, and the severity of infestation. The results identified ten types of damage affecting leaves, stems, and branches. The mean infestation extent across all stations was classified as very severe, reaching 92.69%. Despite the extensive occurrence of damage, the severity at the individual-tree level remained in the light-to-moderate category, with the highest severity recorded in the stems of mature trees (46.45%). These findings indicate that the mangrove vegetation retains a considerable capacity for recovery. Vegetation damage was associated with a combination of biotic factors, including defoliating insects, Littoraria sp., termites, and pathogenic fungi; abiotic factors, such as salinity, temperature fluctuations, and wave action; as well as anthropogenic pressures, including solid waste accumulation, tourism, and settlement activities. These findings highlight the need for integrated management of biotic disturbances and anthropogenic pressures to support the recovery and long-term health of the mangrove ecosystem on Pahawang Island.

Abstract

The study aims to determine the effect of ganyong and tapioca starch formulations on water content, elasticity and sensory properties of mackerel fish pempek, and to determine the best formulation of ganyong and tapioca starch with water content, elasticity and sensory properties of pempek that meet SNI 7661:2019. This study used a single factor RAKL and 4 replications. The research treatments were tapioca and ganyong starch formulations with a ratio of 100%: 0% (P0), 90%: 10% (P1), 80%: 20% (P2), 70%: 30% (P3), 60%: 40% (P4), and 50%: 50% (P5). Data were analyzed using variance (ANARA) and continued with the Least Significant Difference Test (LSD) at a level of 5%. The results showed that the formulation of tapioca and ganyong starch affected the water content, hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, color, aroma, taste, texture and overall acceptance of mackerel fish pempek. The treatment of 10% ganyong starch and 90% tapioca produced the best mackerel fish pempek according to SNI 7661:2019 with a color score of 6.94 (yellowish white), aroma 7.20 (typical pempek), taste 6.66 (typical pempek), texture 6.87 (chewy), overall acceptance 7.39 (like), water content of 51.45%, protein content of 18.39%, hardness value of 244.77 N, springiness value of 7.97 mm, and cohesiveness value of 0.63 N.

Abstract

Coastal areas play an important role in supporting the economic, social, and environmental aspects of communities, one of which is through the presence of mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves have vital ecological and economic functions, such as protecting shorelines from abrasion, providing habitats for marine organisms, and serving as a source of livelihood for coastal communities. Sebesi Island in Lampung is one of the regions with a fairly extensive mangrove ecosystem; however, its management has not yet fully involved the local community. This study aims to determine the relationship between community knowledge and participation in the management of the mangrove ecosystem on Sebesi Island. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and field observations. The analysis results show a positive and significant relationship between the level of knowledge and community participation, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.551 and a significance level of 0.002. These findings indicate that increasing community understanding can encourage greater involvement in sustainable mangrove management.

Abstract

Community participa-tion is a key factor in supporting the sustainability of coral reef ecosystems, particularly in small island communities that rely heavily on marine resources. Community knowledge is considered one of the factors that may influence participation in conservation efforts. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between community knowledge and participation in coral reef ecosystem conservation on Sebesi Island, Lampung Province, Indonesia. A quantitative survey approach was employed using structured questionnaires administered to 30 respondents selected from the local community. The research instrument was tested for validity and reliability prior to data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis at a significance level of 5%. The results indicated that community knowledge regarding coral reef conservation was generally in the good category, as was the level of community participation in conservation activities. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between community knowledge and participation (r = 0.690; p < 0.05), indicating that higher levels of knowledge were associated with greater community involvement in coral reef conservation. These findings suggest that improving environmental knowledge through education, outreach, and community empowerment programs may enhance public participation in coral reef ecosystem conservation. The study provides empirical evidence to support community-based conservation strategies for the sustainable management of coral reef ecosystems on small islands.
