Abstract

The expansion of oil palm plantations is considered a major factor in the decline of tropical forest areas, and negatively impacting biodiversity, especially tree vegetation. This study aimed to identify tree vegetation types and the structure and composition of trees in two oil palm companies, namely PTPN IV and PTPN III. Identification of forest areas was performed by collecting data from the plantations, and processed tree species data using the quadrat method and calculated using the Shannon-Wiener and Simpson's diversity indices. Results showed that tree species with the highest Importance Value Index is Koompasia excels with a percentage of 92.95%, Shorea sp (56.7%), and Koompasia malaccensis (69.32%). Based on tree height, stratum A (>30 m) dominated in PTPN IV with 840 individual/ha, while in PTPN III-1 stratum B (20-30 m) dominated with 330 individual/ha. There were 600 individual/ha in PTPN IV with diameter class of 10-29 cm, 250 individual/ha with diameter class of 30-49 cm in PTPN III-1, and 220 individual/ha with 30-49 cm diameter in PTPN III-2. The highest Shannon-Wiener diversity index (2.148) was found in PTPN III-2, and the highest Simpson's dominance index (0.187) was found in PTPN IV. An inverted "J"-shaped curve indicated that the forest area had a good stand structure, with more small-diameter trees than large-diameter ones. Keywords: High Conservation Value, Importance Value Index, Shannon-Wiener Index, Simpson's Index of Oil Palm.

Abstract

The roasting process has a significant impact on the aroma profile and taste of coffee making it an essential stage in the coffee processing. Currently, the classification of coffee bean roasting levels still relies on subjective human visual assessment, which can lead to errors due to fatigue or negligence. To overcome this problem, a classification system was developed using computer vision technology with a deep learning approach. The present study designed a coffee bean roasting level classification system based on image analysis integrated within an Android application. The Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model with the MobileNet architecture was used to identify and classify coffee beans based on their roasting level. Two CNN models, namely CNN Alpha and CNN Beta were used in this study. The dataset included 1.600 coffee bean images, with 1.200 images used to train the model and 400 images used to test the accuracy. In this experiment, the input image had an optimal size of 70x70 pixels, a learning rate of 0.0001, and 100 epochs for both models. The model training and testing results in the highest accuracy of 98-88% in 6.40-0.0012 minutes. The application test results obtained 93.55% accuracy, 97.06% precision, and 96.67% recall. These results indicate that this model and application function optimally in classifying coffee bean roasting levels accurately. Overall, this study reveals the potential of integrating CNN with the MobileNet architecture into an Android-based application to change the way of roasting level classification, as well as to improve efficiency and accuracy. Keywords: Coffee, Roasting, Convolutional Neural Network, MobileNet, Android.

Abstract

Biodiesel is produced from synthetic ester compounds of vegetable and animal oils through a process of refining, bleaching, degumming, transesterification, and esterification. The quality and characteristics of the fuel are greatly influenced by the storage. The purpose of this research is to determine and analyze the effect of storage conditions on the physical and chemical changes of biodiesel (B100), biodiesel blend (B40), and petro diesel (B0). Experiment was conducted by storage fuels using glass bottle for 35 days arranged into four conditions based on cap and wrapping using aluminum foil, namely P1 (with cap, with wrapping), P2 (with cap, no wrapping), P3 (no cap, with wrapping), and P4 (no cap, no wrapping). Results showed that fuel quality decreases due to storage indicated by an increase in water content, density, acid number, and color parameters, as well as a decrease in the specific calorific value of all fuels. The condition of the storage container affected the changes the quality parameters. Based on its impact on fuel quality decline, the order of storage container conditions from the best is P1 (with cap, with wrap) > P2 (with cap, no wrap) > P3 (no cap, with wrap) > P4 (no cap, no wrap). Keywords: Biodiesel, Biodiesel blend (B40), Diesel fuel, Stability, Storage time.

Abstract

Thermoplastic starch (TPS) is a biofilm made from starch and cellulose. The advantage of thermoplastic starch is easily degraded. TPS has weaknesses in high water affinity and low mechanical properties, so it is necessary to add polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in making TPS packaging. The mechanical properties of TPS-PVA can be further improved by modifying it into a composite with coconut fiber cellulose. This research was purposed to produces a film containing cellulose from coconut fiber as a reinforcing material for film composites as well as to evaluate the biodegradation properties of the resulting film. It is known that the addition of 5% w/v coconut cellulose fiber is the formulation with the best yield when compared with the 1% and 3% w/v formulations. Applying TPS film to chilies can increase the shelf life of chilies. As a product that spoils quickly, one of the efforts made to maintain the quality of chilies is to use packaging made from TPS. Storing chilies at different temperature conditions using TPS-PVA film packaging with the addition of 5% w/v coconut fiber cellulose was able to maintain the shelf life and quality of chilies for 19 days at cold temperatures. Keywords: Chilies, Cellulose, Thermoplastic starch

Abstract

Tissue culture is useful as a way to obtain seeds in large quantities of seedlings in a short time as an effort to preserve Bucephalandra sp. in nature. The use of PGR has problems such as expensive prices and difficult to find, therefore its use can be replaced by natural PGR that are easy to obtain and have relatively cheap prices such as coconut water. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of Benzylaminopurine (BAP) and coconut water on the growth of Bucephalandra sp. in vitro. This research is a 2-factor factorial experiment using a completely randomized design. The factors are concentration of BAP (0; 1; 3; 5 mg/l) and concentration of coconut water (0; 50; 100 ml/l). The results showed Murashige and Skoog (MS) media with the addition of BAP 1 mg/l + coconut water 50 ml/l (4.11 shoots), BAP 5 mg/l + coconut water 50 ml/l (4.33 shoots), and BAP 3 mg/l (6.22 shoots) were able to provide the number of shoots with high results. The addition of coconut water did not affect the growth of Bucephalandra sp. MS media can grow shoots with the best results in measurements of shoot emergence time, number of roots, shoot and root length. Keywords: Aquatic plant, Endemic plant, Plant growth regulators, Tissue culture.
