Abstract

Anemia in pregnant women is a health problem that can increase the risk of complications for the mother and fetus. Efforts to improve hemoglobin (Hb) levels can be carried out through pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, including the consumption of fruits rich in iron. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of giving Ambon bananas and dates on improving hemoglobin levels in pregnant women with anemia. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-post test with control group approach. The sample consisted of 32 pregnant women with anemia who were divided into two groups, namely the intervention group (Fe + Ambon bananas) and the control group (Fe + dates). The intervention was given for 14 days, with Hb levels measured before and after treatment. The results of the Wilcoxon test showed a significant increase in Hb levels in both groups (p < 0.05). The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed that the increase in Hb levels in the Fe + dates group was higher compared to the Fe + Ambon bananas group (p < 0.05). The conclusion of this study shows that the consumption of dates is more effective than Ambon bananas in increasing hemoglobin levels in pregnant women with anemia.

Abstract

Mosquitoes act as vectors of disease in humans. One method to break the chain of transmission is to reduce contact between humans and mosquitoes by using repellents. Currently, several repellents on the market contain chemicals that are harmful to users and the environment. Some researchers have conducted studies as an alternative to replace the chemicals contained in repellents by utilising extracts from natural materials. One part of the plant that is thought to have potential as a repellent is petai peel waste (Parkia speciosa Hassk.), which contains several bioactive compounds. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of petai peel waste extract in spray formulation as a repellent for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Extraction was carried out using the Ultrasonic Assisted Extraction (UAE) method with 96% ethanol solvent. The 25% petai peel extract formulation showed the highest repellent activity, providing over 91% protection during the first and second hours, although its effectiveness gradually declined over time, resulting in an overall average protection of 87.94%. Based on these results, petai peel waste extract has the potential to be developed as an environmentally friendly natural repellent, while also adding value to waste utilization and supporting mosquito control programs.

Abstract

Smoking prevalence among Indonesian university students remains alarmingly high, particularly among male students in engineering faculties; however, empirical evidence on the behavioral determinants of cessation motivation in this population is limited. Understanding the interplay between health knowledge, attitudes, and cessation-related actions is critical for designing evidence-based smoking cessation programs tailored to the university context. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between smoking-related behavior (knowledge, attitudes, and actions) and motivation to quit smoking among engineering students at Universitas Pejuang Republik Indonesia. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. A total of 105 active smokers were recruited through purposive sampling from the Faculty of Engineering. Data were collected using a researcher-developed structured questionnaire comprising 40 Likert-scale items across four domains (knowledge, attitudes, actions, and motivation to quit). The instrument was validated through pilot testing (n=30) and demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha: 0.78–0.85). Bivariate analysis was performed using chi-square tests and Fisher’s exact test with a significance level of α=0.05. The majority of respondents demonstrated good knowledge (96.19%), positive attitudes (92.38%), positive actions (77.14%), and high motivation to quit smoking (84.76%). Statistically significant associations were observed between motivation to quit smoking and knowledge (p=0.045; OR=4.89), attitudes (p=0.037; OR=5.23), and actions (p=0.044; OR=2.87). All three behavioral components were significantly associated with motivation to quit smoking. Attitudes demonstrated the strongest association, suggesting that university-based smoking cessation programs should prioritize attitude-modification strategies, such as motivational interviewing and peer support groups, complemented by behavioral skills training and smoke-free campus policies.

Abstract

Adolescence is a crucial developmental stage, marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes that often impact mental health. Although adolescent mental health issues are increasing, awareness and understanding of these issues remain limited, particularly in areas with limited access to information and strong stigma, such as Polewali Mandar Regency, Indonesia. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of mental health literacy education. A quantitative pre-experimental design with a single-group pretest-posttest was employed, involving 50 high school students aged 15–18 selected using purposive sampling. Participants completed a validated questionnaire to measure their knowledge and attitudes before and after participating in the program, which was delivered face-to-face or online. Educational materials were developed based on the Mental Health Literacy Framework and adapted to local cultural contexts. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test, which showed an increase in knowledge scores from 66.4 (pretest) to 84.2 (posttest), and attitude scores from 71.6 to 88.0 after the intervention, with statistical significance (p < 0.001). These findings indicate that mental health literacy education can significantly improve adolescents' knowledge and attitudes regarding mental health. Implementing mental health literacy education has an impact on improving adolescents' understanding and attitudes toward mental health issues. Integrating structured mental health education into the school curriculum, utilizing both face-to-face and digital learning methods, is crucial for increasing awareness of mental health and reducing stigma among adolescents

Abstract

Stunting continues to pose a significant public health concern in riverine and ecologically vulnerable communities, where environmental, socio-cultural, and health system factors converge. Populations residing in floating dwellings along the Kahayan River face challenges such as inadequate sanitation, exposure to unsafe water sources, and limited access to essential services, all of which may contribute to an elevated risk of stunting. Accordingly, a comprehensive analytical model is warranted to clarify both direct and indirect ecological pathways influencing stunting among children under five in floating-house settlements. This mixed method cross-sectional study was carried out among children aged 0–59 months residing in floating-house communities along the Kahayan River. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select a total of 193 research participants. Quantitative data were gathered through structured questionnaires and anthropometric assessments, and subsequently analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). Qualitative data were collected via in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with mothers, community leaders, healthcare professionals, and local stakeholders. Ecological determinants of stunting encompass individual-level factors such as dietary intake (β = 0.615, t = 12.871) and infectious diseases (β = 0.121, t = 2.370), both of which demonstrate direct impacts on stunting. Conversely, environmental sanitation (β = -0.096, t = 1.985) and cultural factors (β = -0.082, t = 1.665) are found to have indirect effects on stunting. Stunting among riverine floating communities is linked to ecological health factors. To prevent it effectively, a comprehensive approach is needed, including improved sanitation, culturally sensitive nutrition education, infection control, and strengthened community health services. The ecology-based model developed offers a tailored framework for sustainably reducing stunting in disadvantaged river settlements.

Abstract

Increasing competition in Indonesia’s hospital industry requires teaching hospitals to adopt strategies beyond internal innovation by emphasizing collaborative value creation with stakeholders through Co-Creation Value (CCV).This study examines the direct effect of CCV on Sustainable Competitive Advantage (SCA) and its indirect effect through Innovation Capability (IC) at Universitas Hasanuddin Teaching Hospital. A quantitative explanatory design was applied using survey data from 263 employees selected through proportional stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using covariance-based Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with AMOS, and construct validity was assessed through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). CCV had a significant positive effect on IC (β = 0.869) and SCA (β = 0.880). However, IC did not have a significant effect on SCA (β = 0.020). The mediating effect of IC on the relationship between CCV and SCA was weak (indirect β = 0.018). CCV is a more dominant determinant of SCA than IC. In the context of a teaching hospital, sustainable competitive advantage is shaped more strongly by collaborative value creation involving patients and stakeholders than by innovation capability alone. Therefore, hospital management should prioritize co-creation strategies by strengthening stakeholder collaboration and patient engagement, while aligning innovation initiatives with organizational strategy, patient needs, and long-term institutional objectives.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a long-term metabolic disorder whose prevalence continues to rise worldwide. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of moderate-intensity resistance exercise compared with low-intensity resistance exercise and no exercise on glycemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: A quasi-experimental pre–posttest design with three parallel groups was used: a control group receiving standard care without exercise, a low-intensity resistance exercise group, and a moderate-intensity resistance exercise group (total N = 51 participants). The intervention consisted of a 12-week resistance exercise program (three sessions per week) using elastic loop bands with different resistance levels. Outcomes included anthropometric measures, blood pressure, glycemic parameters (HbA1c, fasting, and random blood glucose), and self-care behaviors assessed with the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) questionnaire. Eligible participants were adults aged 25–75 years with T2DM who were receiving oral and/or injectable therapy, without exercise contraindications, and able to provide consent. Individuals with severe diabetic complications, participation in other exercise programs, or medical conditions affecting HbA1c were excluded. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and one-way ANOVA with Tukey post hoc tests. Results: The moderate-intensity group experienced a statistically significant reduction in mean HbA1c of 0.85% (p = 0.016). Changes in the control group (−0.23%) and low-intensity group (0.06%) were not statistically significant. Tukey post hoc analysis confirmed that HbA1c reduction in the moderate-intensity group was significantly greater than in the control group (mean difference, −1.03%; p = 0.004). However, the difference between moderate- and low-intensity groups was not significant (mean difference, −0.34%; p = 0.516). Conclusion: Moderate-intensity resistance exercise significantly improves glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Adding structured moderate-intensity resistance training to non-pharmacological diabetes management can improve glycemic outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding coverage remains suboptimal, partly due to limited family involvement and counseling that primarily targets mothers. Family-based interventions such as Rumah ASIK may improve breastfeeding outcomes; however, evidence on their effectiveness is still limited. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of counseling on breastfeeding practices, complementary feeding, infant health status, and growth. Methods: A pre-experimental study with a post-test only control group design was conducted in Makassar, Indonesia. A total of 50 participants were included, consisting of 20 mothers in the intervention group and 30 in the control group. The intervention involved structured counseling provided during pregnancy and early infancy. Data on exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding practices, infant health status, and growth were collected using questionnaires and interviews. Statistical analyses were performed using Chi-square and Mann–Whitney tests with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding was significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group (p<0.05). However, no significant differences were observed in complementary feeding practices, infant health status, or growth between the two groups. Conclusion: Counseling through the Rumah ASIK approach effectively improves the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding but does not significantly influence complementary feeding practices, infant health status, or growth.
