Abstract

Mijen District as a peripheral area of Semarang has been urbanizing based on population growth and land development in the period 1993 – 2015. One of urbanization problems in Mijen district as peripheral area is land use change and increasing population, which caused by BSB new town development. Identification of urbanization stages in the peripheral area is expected as consideration for government to manage regional development effectively and efficiently. This research uses an urbanization cycle approach by Van Den Berg as a conceptual theory to identify the urbanization stages. In addition, the land development and its linkage with the population growth are also used to identify emerging problems, so that the government reduces its impact. The research shows Mijen District runs into the stage of urbanization, suburbanization, desurbanization/ counterurbanization and the absolute phase of decentralization in the period 1993 – 2015. Most of sub-districts in Mijen have sprawl characteristics which the land development of each sub-district is greater than population growth, so it indicates that the land usage is less. Otherwise,  Polaman, Jatisari, Mijen and Wonolopo have densification characters which each population growth is greater than the land development and  indicates that the lands are used effectively and efficiently.

Abstract

One of the main regional income sectors of Maluku Province comes from the tourism sector. As one of the main sectors to generate regional income, the tourism sector must be further developed so that the results can also be felt more optimally for the government and the community. One of the efforts carried out by the Central Government and the Regional Government of Maluku Province to develop the tourism sector is through organizing an international level tourism event, namely Sail Banda Event held in Banda District, Central Maluku Regency, Maluku Province. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which the development of the Banda Subdistrict area after the implementation of the Sail Banda Event and the impacts that have been made on the development of the Banda Subdistrict area. This is because even though the Sail Banda Event has been carried out but it is suspected that there was no impact from the holding of the event to increase the income and health of the local community in Banda District. In this study, the approach used is a qualitative deductive approach using analysis of regional development achievements.  The results of this analyzes will be used to see the impact of organizing the Sail Banda Event. The findings of this study are that the implementation of the Sail Banda Event in Banda District does not have a significant impact on increasing the income and welfare of the community. Abstract

This study examined the opportunities in urban waste management as one of the mitigation strategies in reducing CH4 gas emission to strengthen Semarang City’s climate resilience. It was perceived as important as Semarang is one of Indonesia’s coastal cities vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. It was recognized that the vast amount of waste being dumped at the City Dump was one of the factors contributing to the high emission of CH4 gas in Semarang City. This study employed qualitative approach in identifying and describing the three factors of climate resilience namely: urban system, social agent, and urban institution, accompanied by quantitative scoring approach suggested by IPCC in finding the opportunities of several waste management strategies in building climate resilience. Analysis suggested the followings: (1) waste management at the TPST by third parties at Jatibarang City Dump may lower the emission of CH4 even exceeding the targets set by RAN-PI, (2) urban system being established was categorized as ‘sufficient’, and (3) social agent and urban institutions were categorized as ‘good’ to build climate resilience. The strategy of waste management by third parties has more opportunity to contribute in building climate resilience compared to waste management at TPST.

The land conversion issue encourages the emergence of landslides in the settlement and residential area. Based on the overlay results of land suitability with built up landmap, about 129 ha (24%) of residential land located in the preservation area, that is creating landslide in residential area. The land conversion also affects to the reduction in water catchment areas resulting so that it reduce groundwater discharge, 22 of the 36 residents who have wells, said that their ground water surface is decreasing. In addition, the reduction in water catchment areas also means that there is an increase in run-off water. And estimate the increase in run-off water by 37.5% from 186,273.48 m3/days of rain. Therefore, the development should based on land suitability and carrying capacity to create a sustainable physic and geographical environment.

This research uses a quantitative approach through questionnaires and field observations. The analysis use descriptive statistical analysis and the analysis of SEM (Structural Equation Modeling). The result of the study show that the environmental quality has a significantly greater effect on resident’s satisfaction in Bukit Sendangmulyo Housing with estimated value 0.740, and for the quality of the house has a small effect on resident’s satisfaction with the estimated value 0.231. Resident’s satisfaction has a negative effect on the propensity to move with the estimated value -0.420. Therefore, the environment quality becomes the most important factor in the quality of living than the quality of the house and need to be noticed in the future development of social housing. The existence of the environment with good and complete infrastructure will make communities comfortable to stay so their propensity to move will be smaller.
