Abstract

This study aims to explore traditional roles in "wanope ikuji" or single-operation childcare in Japan, shaped by the dominant patriarchal structure. Using a qualitative approach with a literature analysis method, the primary source of this study includes an exclusive interview conducted by Abema News on June 11, 2024, involving three mothers in Japan. The findings reveal that the patriarchal cultural system remains deeply entrenched in Japan. Key evidence includes the difficulty Japanese mothers face in seeking employment opportunities after childbirth and childcare. For working mothers, balancing childcare responsibilities and professional duties is extremely challenging. Conversely, Japanese men encounter structural barriers, such as societal norms that informally discourage them from taking parental leave. This indicates that traditional childcare patterns, emphasizing the mother as the primary caregiver, remain strongly embedded. To address the tensions between gender equality and traditional childcare roles, Japanese society must adapt to new realities. Measures that can be taken include raising awareness and education about gender equality within households, developing family-friendly work policies that support work-life balance, and shifting social norms to recognize and encourage the active role of fathers in childcare. By implementing these measures, Japan can foster an environment that better supports gender equality and a fairer division of childcare responsibilities.

Abstract

This article exposes crucial points of negotiated understandings between two characters in Japanese flash fiction entitled Two Frogs. The story tells about the different dreams between two frogs that have plans to reach their destination to see another town. This folktale wants to tell the readers about the similarities between Kyoto and Osaka. Through qualitative method, this research underlines that, in fact, Kyoto is more traditional than Osaka, but later the characters reach such understandings than flourishing the conflicts. Any difference should be negotiated so that it never comes into bigger conflict. Negotiated understanding then could not be separated from such reciprocal cultural appreciations as well. In conclusion, the description, interpretation, and narration of the story explores indications of moral messages of negotiated understandings. It is simply taken as a token of peace that should always be gained rather than unworthy loss due to upcoming frictions between assumptions and interpretations of the characters.

Abstract

Kandoushi or interjection is part of the Japanese word class or 品詞分類 (hinshi bunrui) which functions to express emotions or feelings, such as surprise, happiness, admiration, doubt, and so on. Kandoushi is often found in Japanese language communication and Japanese language media such as anime, comics, films, dramas, and even in games. In Japanese language learning, kandoushi is often found in Choukai (listening) and Kaiwa (conversation) activities. On the other hand, based on the results of a preliminary study in the form of a simple interview, there are still many students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program who do not understand the function, meaning and types of kandoushi. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explain the types, functions, and meanings of kandoushi in the Genshin Impact game. The data collection technique in this study is the listening and note-taking technique. The data source in this study is a game entitled Genshin Impact. This game was chosen because it is one of the games that is popular among fans of Japanese popular culture, including students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program. In addition, various variations of kandoushi forms were found in character dialogues in the Genshin Impact story. The collected data were then analyzed based on Takeshi's (2019) kandoushi type theory. The results of this study were the discovery of 109 speech data containing kandoushi. The 109 data were classified into 6 types of kandoushi. The classification was determined based on the function of each form of kandoushi. Various functions and meanings of kandoushi were also found in the Genshin Impact game.

Abstract

Language change is a significant impact of the evolution of the times and technological advances, facilitating global cultural communication and interaction. One example of this phenomenon is gairaigo in Japanese, which is an absorbent word from a foreign language and is very commonly used in everyday communication, especially in digital media like YouTube content. Gairaigo plays an important role in modern Japanese, especially in areas influenced by global trends such as makeup. This research aims to study the process of forming the use of gairaigo in reviewing makeup on the YouTube channel Nanako in the study of morphology. Data taken from YouTube with the title "[寝起き1秒] 春色ナチュラルだけどしっかり盛れる新作プチプラメイク [Neoki 1-byō] shunshoku nachurarudakedo shikkari moreru shinsaku puchipurameiku". The theory used in this study is the theory of Tsujimura concerning the formation of the word morphology in the Japanese language. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques through recording, recording, and validating data by native speakers. The analysis showed that there were 28 Gairaigo words used in the video. These words undergo three types of morphological processes: compounding, clipping, and borrowing. Examples of these are ノーズシャドウ (nozu shadō), コントゥア (kontua), and ハイライトする. (hairaito suru). The findings showed the Japanese language's adaptation to foreign words through phonetic and morphological adjustments, enriching Japanese vocabulary and reflecting complex social and cultural dynamics. A deeper understanding of these morphological processes can make a significant contribution to the linguistic and literary study of language contacts and language changes as a result of globalization.

Abstract

Gender-differentiated language use in Japanese stems from traditions and social norms that have developed over time. However, usage  of gender-neutral Japanese is still not very popular in Japan. This article aims to provide an insight into gendered language use, particularly gender-based language use. The method used to write this article is a qualitative approach with an analytical descriptive method. The data is then collected through literature study. Also, the data sources used in this study are books, journals, articles and online news related to the uses of neutral Japanese in Japanese society. In this article, the author analyzes the data obtained from the book "Queer Japanese: Gender and Sexual Identities through Linguistic Practices" by Hideko Abe published in 2010 and “Japanese Language and Gender: An Introduction" by Kadek Eva Krishna Adnyani published in 2019. Based on these two books, it can be concluded that the use of gender-neutral language in Japanese is crucial in creating gender equality and inclusivity for all individuals regardless of their gender. However, language change is not the only solution to creating gender equality. There needs to be a broader effort in changing mindsets and social norms that are not inclusive and respectful of gender diversity.
