Abstract

This study explores university students' views on using small group discussions to enhance writing skills. Writing is often considered a challenging skill because it requires the ability to organize ideas, construct sentences, and develop coherent paragraphs. Therefore, effective teaching methods are essential to help students improve their writing abilities. The study investigates the role of small group discussions in the writing learning process. Using a survey method, the researchers distributed questionnaires, and the data were analyzed using percentages for each statement. The findings show that students were motivated to learn English writing through small group discussions and that these discussions helped them better understand the writing process. This study contributes to the understanding of how small group discussions can support writing instruction, as previous research has mainly focused on their use in teaching speaking and reading skills.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate how the implementation of a communicative participation point system could enhance students' speaking abilities. Specifically, the research aimed to determine whether the use of the participation point system influenced students' grades and how students perceived its role in developing their English-speaking skills. The study focused on both the learners' perceptions and their performance scores. A sample of 36 students was selected from a total of 150 12th-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Palembang. Utilizing a mixed-method approach with an explanatory sequential design, quantitative and qualitative data were collected in two phases, with each phase informing the other. The findings revealed that the t-value (4.846) exceeded the t-table value (1.680), confirming that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was valid. This indicates that the application of the communicative participation point system had a significant impact on students' speaking performance and scores.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of the Quizizz application on vocabulary mastery as part of English learning exercises among tenth-grade students at SMK Negeri 2 Panyabungan, focusing on recount text topics. It addresses challenges such as limited vocabulary mastery, low motivation and interest in learning English, and insufficient opportunities for practice. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed, involving experimental and control classes. Data collection included pre-tests, treatments, and post-tests using 20 multiple-choice questions on recount texts. The findings revealed that the experimental class, which used Quizizz, had a higher average post-test score (82) compared to the control class (67.5). Data analysis using the t-test showed a t-count of 4.965 and a sig. tailed (p) score of 0.001, with α = 0.05 and degrees of freedom (df) = 19. Since p < α (0.001 < 0.05), the alternative hypothesis was accepted, and the null hypothesis was rejected. These results indicate that using the Quizizz application significantly enhances students’ vocabulary mastery compared to traditional teaching methods. The study highlights the effectiveness of Quizizz in addressing vocabulary and engagement issues in English learning.

Abstract

This study critically explores how moral values are incorporated and communicated in the primary school English textbooks “My Next Words Grades 3 and 4.” Using a qualitative research approach, the study applies Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine both textual and visual components of the textbooks. The objective is to uncover the moral ideologies embedded in the content and assess how these values correspond with broader cultural and educational goals. By analyzing linguistic elements, stories, and images, the study identifies recurring themes such as respect, empathy, and responsibility, while also revealing implicit messages related to cultural norms and social hierarchies. The findings indicate that while the textbooks effectively promote moral education, some portrayals perpetuate stereotypes and fail to include diverse viewpoints. This research enhances our understanding of the connection between language learning and moral development, offering valuable insights for curriculum developers and educators aiming to create more inclusive and ethically enriching educational materials.

Abstract

TikTok stands out from other social media platforms due to its advanced algorithm, which analyzes user behaviors like search history, likes, and watch time to provide personalized video recommendations on its For You Page (FYP). Unlike other platforms, which require users to search for content using specific keywords, TikTok uses sophisticated artificial intelligence to tailor content, contributing to its popularity, especially among users aged 14 to 30, including students. The platform's short videos and hashtag-driven content, such as #duetme, have become popular, enabling collaborative English conversations. This study investigates the views of vocational high school students at SMK Sritanjung Banyuwangi on using TikTok's duet feature to improve their creative English-speaking skills. Using a qualitative research design, data were gathered through questionnaires and interviews. The results show that 11 out of 18 students reported a boost in their confidence when creating English conversation duets on TikTok, indicating the platform's potential as an effective tool for enhancing English communication.

Abstract

This study aims to compile a systematic review of the use of metaphors, prototypes, and meaning analysis within the scope of cognitive linguistics through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Cognitive linguistics is a branch of linguistics that examines the relationship between language, thought, and human experience. This field focuses on three key concepts: conceptual metaphor, prototype structure, and the dynamics of meaning analysis. This review involves analyzing relevant literature, including journal articles, books, and research reports, to identify patterns, trends, and gaps in previous studies. The findings indicate that conceptual metaphors play a crucial role in representing human experience, while prototype theory provides insights into conceptual categories and meaning perception. Furthermore, meaning analysis within cognitive linguistics tends to be interdisciplinary, involving cognitive psychology, anthropology, and computer science. This study also highlights that the integration of digital technology in cognitive linguistic analysis presents new opportunities for developing more accurate methods. Overall, this research provides a comprehensive mapping of current literature and offers recommendations for future research directions, particularly in applying cognitive linguistics to understand language and cultural phenomena.

Abstract

In the digital era, multilingualism is increasingly visible on social media platforms like TikTok. This study examines Code Switching and Code Mixing in multilingual communication by analyzing content from the TikTok account Mega Kenichiro Official (Ritsuki’s Vlog) through a sociolinguistic perspective. The objective is to understand how speakers use Indonesian, Japanese, and Javanese in daily interactions and its impact on digital communication. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzed 20 selected vlogs through note-taking, focusing on intra-sentential and intra-lexical code mixing, as well as inter-sentential code switching. The conversations were classified based on speakers and language patterns. The findings show that Japanese words are frequently mixed into Indonesian sentences, while code switching between Indonesian and Javanese occurs mostly in complete sentences. Additionally, the influence of these linguistic patterns extends to audience interactions, as reflected in their comments. This study concludes that multilingualism plays a significant role in shaping online discourse, making digital media a dynamic space for language interaction. Future research should explore the educational implications of code switching and code mixing in language learning.
