Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of Kahoot! based game learning in enhancing vocabulary achievement among third-grade students in a Cambridge-based bilingual school in Sidoarjo, addressing a gap in research on digital game-based learning within this specific educational context. Employing a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, the research compared an experimental group using Kahoot! with a control group receiving traditional vocabulary instruction. Vocabulary data, focused on descriptive texts, were collected through tests, and statistical analysis, including ANOVA, try-out validation, and independent t-tests, was conducted using SPSS. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in vocabulary achievement for the Kahoot! group (p = 0.025), suggesting that the engaging and interactive nature of digital game-based learning more effectively fosters vocabulary mastery compared to traditional methods. These results also support Kahoot!'s utility as a practical tool for formative assessment, particularly within the Cambridge curriculum framework, and offer valuable insights for educators seeking innovative and engaging vocabulary teaching strategies in bilingual learning environments.

Abstract

This study investigates English language teaching practices in orphanages, highlighting the lived experiences of volunteer educators in non-formal settings. Using a narrative inquiry approach at Mutiara Insan Orphanage, Banyuwangi, East Java, the research uncovers emotional, pedagogical, and contextual complexities in teaching under social and resource constraints. Data were gathered through participatory observation, narrative interviews, visual documentation, and literature review. Findings reveal that non-professional volunteers primarily use gamification to engage learners of diverse ages and proficiencies. Despite challenges such as limited resources, time, and inconsistent learner backgrounds, volunteers demonstrated adaptive, empathetic, and inclusive teaching practices. Notably, children showed gains in both basic English skills and socio-emotional confidence. This research offers a novel lens on English instruction in marginalized, under-researched contexts and underscores the urgent need for sustained pedagogical support and reflective practice in orphanage-based education.

Abstract

Abstract

Crafting digital storytelling involves a sequence of 12 steps. These phases demonstrate the intricate nature of crafting digital narratives. Furthermore, the third-year students of the English Language Education program at the University of 17 Agustus 1945 Banyuwangi lack familiarity with these steps the features in the software and how to use these features in creating digital storytelling. In response to these problems, this training aims to train participants to develop digital storytelling collaboratively to exchange experiences and expertise to generate more innovative digital stories. 30 students (23 women and 7 men) attended this training, which lasted 6 weeks. This training comprises three primary stages: before crafting digital storytelling, preparation of equipment, crafting digital storytelling, and after crafting digital storytelling. Drawing from the assessment of digital stories created by participants and questionnaires, collaborative digital storytelling training allows students to build knowledge about digital technology literacy and understanding of stories. This digital storytelling training also significantly affects their speaking skills, which can be seen from several aspects such as pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency and self-confidence. This collaborative digital storytelling training explicitly shows that students can handle complexity or challenges while creating digital storytelling because they can share knowledge and have a high level of responsibility for the same goal, which is creating more creative and inspiring digital stories.
