Abstract

This paper is a result of a mixed method research of untranslatability phenomenon in translation, aimed at identifying the classification of untranslatability based on linguistic units, knowing the causing factors of the untranslatability, describing the approaches used by the translator to solve the untranslatability problems, and measuring the readability of the translation.Using contrastive analysis method, the researcher analyzed the data collected using content analysis on the objects of the research, an English book by Aliah Schleifer and its Indonesian translation by Agung Prihantoro. Questionnaires were distributed to some respondents to know the readability of the translation.Based on the results of the analysis, it is known that the untranslatability phenomenon occured in the level of word, phrase and clause. The untranslatability was caused by two factors: linguistic equivalence absence and cultural equivalence absence. The cultural factor was dominant since the source book mostly discusses about Arabian culture and religion matters. In solving the untranslatability problems, the translator applied contrastive principles, by (1) italicizing the untranslatable concepts, (2) changing the words with the similar ones in the target language, and (3) giving explanation or meaning description for the concepts with annotations, descriptive phrases and/or other supportive explanations. The result of analysis on the distributed questionnaires shows that generally, the translation is quite understandable, or it has a quite good readability. But, there is a tendency that the book is more suitable to be read by those who are accustomed to religious terms. It is a bit inappropriate for common readers.

This research is of a descriptive and qualitative study. It uses six stages: pre-task, task, planning, report, analysis, and practice (British Council, 2018) along with three techniques for collecting data: observation, questionnaire and in-depth interviewing. There were 34 students of Hotel Department at Sahid Tourism Institute of Surakarta and an English lecturer prepared as research subjects. The research findings show that: (1) students were very active in teaching and learning ESP through task-based approach; (2) students used their ESP in authentic situations that felt like the “real world”; and (3) at the end of the teaching and learning process, their knowledge of ESP improved. The findings indicate strongly that not only do the teaching English for Specific Purposes through task-based approach develop the students’ English speaking skills effectively, but also increase their hospitality knowledge.

Abstract

Errors are very natural and even become an important part of learning (Davies, 2000:105). Therefore, there are many scientists who analyze errors to achieve better understanding on how students learn language. Based on the importance of conducting error analysis, this research is developed to analyze errors in the usage of English prepositions as there are still limited number of people who analyze this topic. The data used are utterances produced by third year college students majoring in English. All of the students’ utterances are obtained through interview. The data obtained was then transcribed and analyzed by applying a theory of preposition stated by Collins (1991). The results show that there are 15 prepositions which are used incorrectly in the students’ untterances such as about, among, as, at, because of, by, during, for, from, in, of, on, through, to, and with.

Questions play important role in classroom interaction, especially in the 21st century – in which critical thinking skills are the target of learning, beside content knowledge. Almost in every classroom, questions are used for various purposes. It might be given at the initial stage, when core activities take place, or at the end of the lesson. Therefore, it is important that teachers are skilful in questioning, know what types of questions can trigger critical thinking, are aware of whom the questions are for, how questions are used to manage classroom, etc. 98 students of a vocational high school participated in the study, responding to a questionnaire developed on the basis of the purposes of questions and the tactics for questioning. Descriptive qualitative was used as the method of study, with the help of questionnaire as the instrument for collecting data. SPSS data analysis application was used to get description of the phenomenon. The result showed that most students favored questions. It sharpened their thinking ability. It reflected also the fact that teachers were quite skilful in questioning, as items of the questionnaire targeted information on purposes and tactics of questioning.
