Abstract

Family members often experience anxiety during the intraoperative period because of uncertainty regarding surgical progress and the patient’s condition. Real-time perioperative communication technologies, including mobile applications, automated short message service updates, and digital tracking systems, may help reduce anxiety and improve family experiences. This systematic review aimed to synthesise evidence on the effectiveness of real-time perioperative communication technologies in reducing family anxiety. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Searches were conducted in Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online Library, and SAGE Journals using terms related to perioperative communication, surgical tracking, family, caregivers, and anxiety. Eligible studies included randomised controlled trials, quasi-experimental, observational, cohort, and cross-sectional studies evaluating digital communication interventions for families of surgical patients. Methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools. Owing to heterogeneity in study designs, interventions, populations, and outcome measures, findings were synthesised narratively. Ten studies were included: five randomised controlled trials, one quasi-experimental study, two observational studies, and two cross-sectional studies. Most studies reported that real-time communication through SMS updates, mobile applications, or digital dashboards was associated with lower family anxiety and greater satisfaction than standard communication. However, substantial heterogeneity limited direct comparisons across studies. Real-time perioperative communication technologies appear promising for reducing family anxiety and supporting family-centred perioperative care. Further multicentre studies using standardised interventions and outcome measures are needed.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic condition that poses significant risks for various complications. Effective self-care management of diabetes is crucial in controlling and preventing the onset of further complications, many patients with diabetes mellitus experience Diabetes Burnout Syndrome while undergoing self-care management. Prolonged Diabetes Burnout Syndrome directly impacts the quality of life of patients with diabetes mellitus. This study aims to determine the relationship between Diabetes Burnout Syndrome and Self-Care Management in diabetes patients. This research adopts a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach involving a sample of 70 participants selected using consecutive sampling methods. The results of this study indicate that the majority of diabetes patients experience moderate levels of burnout (82.9%) and have moderate Self-Care Management (71.4%). The results of the Pearson correlation statistical test show a significant relationship, albeit with a weak correlation coefficient, between Diabetes Burnout Syndrome and self-care management in diabetes mellitus patients (p value =0,002; r = - 0,368). The findings of this study indicate that high levels of burnout syndrome are associated with a decrease in self-care management ability in diabetes patients. The results obtained from this research are expected to provide foundational knowledge for the development of strategies and interventions aimed at addressing Diabetes Burnout Syndrome during the implementation of self-care management in diabetes patients.

Abstract

The success of exclusive breastfeeding is influenced by internal and external factors, particularly among primiparous mothers. This study aims to analyze the relationship of breastfeeding self-efficacy, family support, and the role of midwives with exclusive breastfeeding among primiparous mothers in the working area of the Poncol Primary Health Center, Magetan Regency. This study employed a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of primiparous mothers with infants eligible for the study within the service area of the Poncol Primary Health Center, Magetan Regency. The study sample was selected using total sampling, comprising 52 respondents. Data were gathered using questionnaires on breastfeeding self-efficacy, family support, and the role of midwives, as well as an exclusive breastfeeding record form. Data analysis was conducted using univariate analysis to describe the characteristics of the study variables and bivariate analysis using the chi-square test to analyze the relationships among variables. The results showed a relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy and exclusive breastfeeding. However, no relationship was found between family support, the role of midwives, and exclusive breastfeeding. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening mothers’ self-efficacy through ongoing education and psychosocial support. Family support and the role of midwives remain essential for creating a conducive environment for successful breastfeeding, particularly among primiparous mothers.

Abstract

Chemotherapy-related adverse effects and prolonged treatment may compromise adherence. Digital interventions may support medication-taking, symptom monitoring, and communication with health professionals. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effect of digital interventions on adherence among patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy or other anticancer therapy. Five databases—Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and ProQuest—were searched, with the last search reported as February 2024. Full-text original articles in English were considered, the review was reported according to PRISMA, and methodological quality was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). The search identified 456 records. Interventions included mobile/smartphone applications, web-based platforms, SMS or advanced messaging, telehealth/videoconferencing, smart pill-bottle reminders, and mobile games. Most included studies reported improved adherence or related outcomes, although some did not show significant between-group differences. Digital interventions therefore appear promising for supporting treatment adherence and patient engagement. However, heterogeneity in study design, treatment type, and adherence measurement limits the strength and generalizability of the conclusions.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of chronic kidney disease and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors among adolescents highlights the need for an accurate instrument to assess kidney health literacy in this population. Existing instruments primarily measure general health literacy and may not adequately address kidney-specific knowledge and preventive behaviors. This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of the Adolescent Kidney Health Literacy Questionnaire. A descriptive quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. Content validity was assessed using the Item-Level Content Validity Index (I-CVI) and Scale-Level Content Validity Index (S-CVI). Construct validity was evaluated using Pearson’s product-moment correlation, while internal consistency reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha. The content validity analysis demonstrated excellent relevance, with I-CVI and S-CVI values of 1.00. Construct validity testing showed that all items were valid, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.481 to 0.859, exceeding the critical r-value of 0.316. The questionnaire also demonstrated excellent internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.966. These findings indicate that the Indonesian version of the Adolescent Kidney Health Literacy Questionnaire has strong validity and reliability for assessing kidney health literacy among adolescents. The instrument can be used by nurses, school health educators, and researchers to identify baseline kidney health literacy and evaluate preventive and health-promoting interventions targeting adolescents.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is still a global health problem that causes impaired respiratory function, such as increased breathing frequency, decreased oxygen saturation, and shortness of breath. In addition to pharmacological therapy, complementary therapies are needed to help improve respiratory function. Although acupressure has been shown to be beneficial in a variety of respiratory diseases, evidence regarding the effectiveness of the LU1, LU7, LU9, LI4, and LI11 point combinations in tuberculosis patients is limited. The objective of this research to analyze the effect of acupressure administration at points LU1, LU7, LU9, LI4, and LI11 on the respiratory system of pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Quantitative research with a pre-experimental design of one-group pretest–posttest was conducted on 27 pulmonary tuberculosis patients at one of the hospitals in Semarang City during May-July 2024. Samples were selected using purposive sampling. Variables measured included respiratory rate (RR), oxygen saturation (SpO₂), and Modified Borg Dyspnea Scale before and after acupressure intervention. The data was analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test with a significance level of 5%. After the intervention, the average RR decreased from 24.48 ± 1.09 to 20.70 ± 2.91 times/minute, SpO₂ increased from 95.67 ± 0.62% to 97.59 ± 1.39%, and the Borg score decreased from 4.33 ± 0.62 to 2.33 ± 1.39. All changes showed significant differences (p < 0.001). Acupressure at the LU1, LU7, LU9, LI4, and LI11 points had a significant effect on the improvement of the respiratory system of pulmonary tuberculosis patients. This intervention has the potential to become a nursing-based complementary therapy to support the improvement of respiratory function and the quality of care for tuberculosis patients. Research with a stronger design and control group is needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract

Spiritual care is an important component of holistic care for critically ill patients, yet nurses may encounter difficulties integrating it into clinical practice. This study examined the associations of nurses’ knowledge and motivation with spiritual care provision for critically ill patients at H. A. Sulthan Daeng Radja Bulukumba Regional Public Hospital. A descriptive correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 60 eligible nurses working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency Department (ED), recruited using total sampling. Data were collected using study-specific questionnaires measuring knowledge, motivation, and self-reported spiritual care provision. Fisher’s exact test showed significant associations between knowledge and spiritual care provision (p = 0.018; OR = 4.69; 95% CI: 1.39–15.87) and between motivation and spiritual care provision (p = 0.012; OR = 10.73; 95% CI: 2.82–40.77). Nurses with good knowledge and strong motivation were more likely to report good spiritual care provision. Educational and institutional support may strengthen spiritual care practices, although further longitudinal or interventional studies are needed.

Abstract

Burnout remains a global problem. Burnout can be defined as long-term work stress resulting from the interaction of constant emotional distress associated with prolonged intense interpersonal involvement and personal characteristics. The purpose of this study is to analyze burnout as a determinant factor of delayed response, decreased response, and decreased patient satisfaction in the emergency department: A quantitative study of nursing personnel. This study used a pre-experimental method with a cross-sectional design. This study used a population of 26 nurses working in inpatient care, and the sample was drawn using a total sampling technique of 26. This study used a linear regression test. The results of the dependent variable burnout have a significant relationship to the two independent variables of patient satisfaction and response time with significant values of 0.030 and 0.049, respectively, which means p value < 0.05. So it is found that burnout can affect emergency services in the Emergency Room of Klungkung Regional Hospital.

Abstract

Ethical and empathetic nursing care is essential for high-quality, patient-centered healthcare, yet its consistent integration into nursing practice remains a challenge. This study aimed to identify publication trends, research patterns, and emerging topics related to ethical and empathetic approaches in nursing care using bibliometric analysis. Bibliographic data were retrieved from the Dimensions database on 22 November 2025. The search was limited to articles published between 2022 and 2025 in Health Sciences, Health Services, Nursing, and Clinical Sciences. Eligible records were analyzed using VOSviewer to generate bibliometric maps and visualize term relationships. Of 226,127 records initially identified, 13,799 articles met the eligibility criteria. Publication output increased from 135 articles in 2023 to 187 in 2024, then slightly decreased to 178 in 2025. Term co-occurrence analysis identified 121 terms grouped into four clusters. “Empathy” occurred 42 times, with 89 links and a total link strength of 307, indicating its prominent role within the research network. These findings demonstrate growing research interest in ethical and empathetic nursing care. Future studies should explore underrepresented topics and peripheral variables, particularly in developing countries, to strengthen the evidence base and identify new directions for ethical and empathetic nursing practice.

Abstract

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and is associated with various physical, emotional, and psychosocial problems, particularly among patients with advanced-stage disease. Palliative care plays an essential role in improving patients’ quality of life through symptom management and comprehensive support. Nursing students, as future healthcare professionals, need adequate knowledge and preparedness to provide quality palliative care. This study aimed to examine the association between knowledge and nursing students’ preparedness in providing palliative care to cancer patients at Udayana University. A descriptive correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 190 nursing students selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing–Indonesian Version (PCQN-I) and the Preparedness for Providing Palliative Care Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. Most respondents had a moderate level of knowledge (53.2%) and preparedness (52.6%) regarding palliative care. The results demonstrated a statistically significant weak positive correlation between knowledge and preparedness (r = 0.367, p < 0.000), indicating that higher levels of knowledge were associated with greater preparedness in providing palliative care. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening palliative care education and training within nursing curricula to improve students’ preparedness and competence in delivering holistic care to cancer patients.
