Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the TikTok account @vmuliana in enhancing personal branding knowledge among students of the Communication Studies Program at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten senior students and observation of five TikTok videos related to personal branding. The analysis reveals that @vmuliana’s content supports students’ understanding of key concepts such as value consistency (Unity), digital visibility (Visibility), and personal distinctiveness (Distinctiveness) in building a professional identity. Informative, relatable, and strategically communicated content facilitates the transformation of conceptual knowledge into practical actions, such as optimizing LinkedIn profiles and creating professional resumes. These findings indicate that TikTok can function as an effective informal learning medium for developing students' personal branding skills in the digital age.

Abstract

Children living in orphanages generally come from underprivileged family backgrounds and therefore require special attention and guidance. This study aims to analyze the role of caregiver communication in shaping the independence of foster children at Putri Siti Aisyah Orphanage in Aek Kanopan. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques including interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings show that caregivers train the children to become independent by instilling discipline in daily activities. The communication established between caregivers and foster children plays a crucial role in fostering the children’s independence. The communication approach adopted by caregivers combines both humanistic and authoritative methods, emphasizing empathy as well as firmness in nurturing. The foster children exhibit positive development in terms of behavior, responsibility, and social skills. Communication challenges such as the children’s reserved attitudes, diverse backgrounds, and environmental influences can be overcome through patient and consistent communication. This study affirms that caregivers function not only as guides but also as companions who support the process of developing children’s independence. The findings highlight the importance of continuous and effective communication in supporting the growth of foster children into self-reliant individuals.

Abstract

Night markets are one of the alternative forms of recreation for the public, offering various amusement rides at affordable prices. However, behind their appeal, night markets also carry significant safety risks for visitors, particularly related to the amusement rides. This study aims to examine the liability of the organizer regarding consumer safety standards for those harmed in accidents involving amusement rides at the Naga Nusantara Night Market, viewed from the perspective of Maqasid Shariah. The research method used is empirical legal research with a sociological approach, through the collection of primary data from direct interviews. The findings show that the lack of safety procedures and negligence in ride maintenance resulted in physical injury to consumers, which was resolved by providing compensation, representing a form of civil liability. From the perspective of Maqasid Shariah, however, such incidents violate the principle of ḥifẓ al-nafs (protection of life), which is one of the main objectives of Islamic law. Therefore, increased supervision, regular inspections, and safety education are necessary to ensure consumer rights and prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the dynamics of self-disclosure carried out by adolescents facing mental health challenges through social media, with the Into the Light account serving as a contextual space that represents these practices. This research adopts a qualitative case study approach that allows for an in-depth exploration of participants’ subjective experiences. The findings reveal that self-disclosure plays an important role in enabling adolescents to express their feelings and thoughts in a safe and anonymous environment on social media. Factors such as emotional needs, trust levels, past experiences, and perceptions of a safe digital space influence adolescents’ decisions to engage in self-disclosure. Although the Into the Light account was not directly involved as a participatory object in this research, its presence provides context for understanding digital spaces that support openness. This study contributes to broadening the understanding of how social media, as a supportive and inclusive environment, can promote adolescent mental health.

Abstract

When reflecting on the state of law enforcement in Indonesia, it becomes apparent—after reviewing various cases—that the system has not functioned effectively, and in fact, may be considered poor. The weakness of law enforcement in Indonesia is reflected in the unresolved major cases, one of which is the entrenched practice of corruption, the perpetrators of which are rarely held accountable. This reality stands in stark contrast to the treatment of cases involving ordinary citizens, where law enforcement officers are notably more responsive. As is widely known, individuals involved in corruption often belong to the upper class—officials and affluent individuals—who possess the power to interfere with the effectiveness of law enforcement itself. This study employs a qualitative approach, where data in the form of narrative descriptions or attachments are collected and then analyzed descriptively. Descriptive qualitative research is a method that describes situations and events (Nurdiansyah and Rugoyah, 2021). The data collected comprise words, images, and not numerical values. These data may originate from interview transcripts, field notes, photographs, personal documents, memos, and other official documents. These informants included Jaka, the owner of the Instagram account @tebingtinggiku, and two followers, namely @chindykhr_ and @nwanny12, who emphasized that the use of social media by the @tebingtinggiku account as a platform for public service information has had a significant impact on the law enforcement process in the City of Tebing Tinggi. This platform has been utilized optimally to ensure more effective law enforcement efforts in the region.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze intercultural communication between Muslim and non-Muslim students within the multicultural environment of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU). In both academic and social interactions, cultural and religious diversity can be both a potential and a challenge in establishing effective communication. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The findings reveal that the effectiveness of intercultural communication is influenced by several factors, including individual cultural competence, empathy and openness, stereotypes and prejudices, religious symbols, and the campus social environment. The forms of communication observed include formal and informal verbal communication, non-verbal communication, and symbolic cultural and religious expressions. The study concludes that successful intercultural communication requires institutional support, inclusive interaction spaces, and mutual respect among students. These findings are expected to serve as input for higher education institutions in strengthening multicultural and tolerant practices on campus.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Islamic Students Association (HMI) in advocating for national issues through the perspectives of student activism and public communication. As a student organization with a long history in Indonesia's socio-political movements, HMI plays a strategic role in shaping public opinion and promoting policy change. Using a qualitative approach and case study method, this study examines the dynamics of the HMI movement in responding to national issues such as democracy, social justice, and freedom of expression. Data were obtained through documentation of activities, observation of official social media, and analysis of mass media reporting on HMI actions. The primary focus of the analysis was directed at activism patterns, public communication strategies, and the resulting media narratives. The findings indicate that the success of HMI's advocacy is influenced by its ability to contextually articulate issues, build strategic communication networks with the media, and integrate Islamic values as the moral foundation of the movement. Furthermore, the use of social media is an important instrument in disseminating messages and mobilizing public support. This study strengthens understanding of the relationship between student movements, political communication, and public relations strategies in a democratic space. It also offers practical recommendations for HMI to develop a communication approach that is adaptive to social and technological change. Thus, HMI's role in advocating national issues is understood not only as a response to the political situation, but as an effort to build a structured and sustainable national discourse.

Abstract

Emancipation is often associated with the feminist movement to fight for women's rights and rejection of discrimination. Enforcement of emancipation is marked by the movement of women to erode patriarchy. Over time, the concept of emancipation underwent a shift in meaning, giving birth to a radical new understanding. This understanding is matriarchy, namely the extreme domination of women and the desire of women's groups to dominate other people in terms of thoughts, ideas, and even the life processes of other groups so that they accept their ideas. What's worse is that this matriarchal understanding is absorbed and applied in households which is very contrary to Islamic provisions. The analytical method used is descriptive qualitative analysis with a conceptual approach and a case approach. The results of the study indicate that there is a distortion regarding the concept of emancipation in the household, which creates matriarchy. The concept of matriarchy itself is not in line with Islamic teachings. The condition of matriarchy affects social welfare if in a family this understanding continues in the long term. As a result, there will be disputes that end in divorce so that social welfare cannot be felt in the family. The solution to overcoming this matriarchy is to understand each other's nature, and carry out the rights and obligations that have been ordained by God as well as possible.
