Abstract

This study aims to examine the symbolic meanings within religious scenes in the film Surat Kecil untuk Tuhan (A Little Letter to God) using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The film, based on the true story of a teenage girl named Keke who suffers from cancer, presents various religious symbols such as prayer, places of worship, a letter to God, and other spiritual expressions. The analysis is conducted through three levels of meaning: denotative (literal meaning), connotative (emotional and cultural meaning), and myth (ideological meaning). The findings reveal that these religious symbols are not merely decorative visual elements but serve as powerful conveyors of spiritual messages about faith, hope, sacrifice, and tolerance. The film effectively constructs a touching and humanistic religious narrative, offering viewers a medium for reflection on the values of life and spirituality.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication ethics of Generation Z in Patumbak District, Deli Serdang Regency, both in direct and digital communication, especially social media, with an approach of ethical values in Islam. Generation Z is known as digital natives who are very close to information technology, but this closeness also influences communication patterns and the application of ethical values. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation, and triangulation of sources is carried out to test the validity of the data. The results of the study indicate a shift in the communication ethics of Generation Z, both in face-to-face interactions that tend to decrease in terms of politeness, empathy, and emotional involvement, as well as in digital communication that is vulnerable to free expression without ethical considerations. In the Islamic context, the principles of qaulan are an important reference in forming polite and civilized communication. Therefore, an understanding of communication ethics based on moral and religious values needs to be strengthened to maintain the quality of communication of Generation Z in the digital era.

Abstract

The application of chemical castration punishment for sexual predators is an appropriate policy to protect children from sexual predators in Indonesia, as formulated in Article 81 and Article 81A of Government Regulation in Lieu of Law Number 1 Year 2016 on the Second Amendment to Law Number 23 Year 2002 on Child Protection.  It is hoped that this policy can reduce the number of sexual violence that occurs in children. But there are polemics about the punishment, including; various groups think that castration punishment has violated human rights, the absence of technical instructions to perform chemical castration, to the rejection of the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) to become the executor of chemical castration because it is contrary to the medical code of ethics. This research has two problem formulations, namely; I) Why does the Government of Indonesia apply chemical castration punishment for sexual predators? II) How is the human rights perspective on chemical castration punishment? This research is a normative research with secondary data sources consisting of primary legal materials, secondary legal materials, and tertiary legal materials. Using data collection techniques with literature study and interviews. While data analysis uses qualitative analysis so that this form of research is evaluative research. The approaches taken are conceptual approach, legislative approach, and historical approach. The purpose of this research, namely; I) to explain more deeply the development of child protection policies in Indonesia until the implementation of chemical castration punishment. II) to explain further about human rights perspective towards chemical castration punishment. Finally, it concludes that: I) The implementation of chemical castration punishment by the Government of Indonesia is an effort to reduce the number of sexual violence against children. II) Chemical castration punishment in Indonesia is in accordance with the spirit of human rights in Indonesia. Because it can protect the human rights of children who range to be harmed.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the digital da'wah management practices implemented by the Medan Muda Berdakwah community, a representative of an urban youth da'wah movement that adapts to socio-technological challenges. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and digital documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results indicate that this community implements a structured digital da'wah strategy through three main stages: planning based on social trends and the Islamic calendar; implementing contextual, visual, and communicative content through Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube; and evaluating using data insights and audience engagement. Two-way communication practices and internal-external collaboration are key elements in strengthening the loyalty of digital congregations and creating a da'wah narrative that is moderate, inclusive, and relevant to the spiritual needs of digital natives. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating theological competence, technological skills, and communication strategies in managing digital da'wah. These findings provide theoretical contributions to the development of a network-based da'wah management model and provide practical implications for religious organizations in designing sustainable digital da'wah strategies amidst the complexities of the Society 5.0 era.

Abstract

This study aims to answer the following question: what forms and mechanisms of gender bias are experienced by female journalists in Medan, and how do these biases impact their roles and positions within the field of journalism? Employing a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that female journalists in Medan face systemic inequalities, including gender-based task segregation, male dominance in strategic editorial positions, and inadequate protection against harassment and workplace discrimination. Furthermore, prevailing social and cultural norms reinforce domestic expectations of women, which significantly restrict their mobility and career advancement in journalism. These findings affirm the relevance of structural feminist theory and the intersectionality framework, while offering practical contributions for the development of gender-responsive media policies. The study recommends revising internal media policies and strengthening advocacy networks to create a more equitable, inclusive, and discrimination-free professional environment for female journalists.

Abstract

This study explores the use of code-mixing in English language learning within the Pharmacy Undergraduate Program at Institut Kesehatan Helvetia Medan in 2024. Code-mixing, which involves blending elements from two or more languages within a single utterance, is considered to enhance communication effectiveness between lecturers and students. Previous research has indicated that this strategy can support vocabulary acquisition and improve overall English language skills. The research focuses on the types of code-mixing frequently employed, students’ perceptions of this practice, and its impact on their comprehension of the material as well as their English proficiency. A descriptive qualitative approach is applied, with data collected through observation and audio recordings. Data analysis involves reduction, display, and conclusion drawing to gain an in-depth understanding of this phenomenon.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the social media promotion strategies implemented by Nakny Funland in increasing the attraction and interest in visiting tourists. Using a qualitative approach and case study method, this research explores the planning, implementation and effectiveness of digital promotions carried out at these educational and cultural-based tourist attractions. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews with managers and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana models, and its validity was tested through source triangulation. The research results show that Nakny Funland synergistically integrates marketing mix elements (4Ps) in their digital strategy: products are packaged through narrative visual content on Instagram and TikTok; prices are managed through bundling promotions and thematic discounts; information distribution is carried out completely online; and promotion becomes the core of the strategy through platform segmentation, user-generated content (UGC) based content, and visual emotional campaigns. Social media not only functions as a one-way communication tool, but also as a two-way interaction space that builds emotional attachment and increases visitor loyalty. Data-driven evaluations, such as social media insights and visit correlation, strengthen the effectiveness of this strategy. This research shows that an adaptive and data-based "digital first" promotion model can be a blueprint for managing similar tourist attractions in the competitive digital marketing era.

Abstract

This study discusses how the Instagram account @eye.on.palestine acts as a digital propaganda agent in voicing the narrative of the Palestinian people's struggle through social media. This account consistently presents visual content in the form of images, videos, infographics, and narratives that depict the suffering of civilians, infrastructure damage, and symbols of struggle such as the Palestinian flag, children, and medical volunteers. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis to explore the digital propaganda techniques employed by the account during the period from April to June 2025. Data was collected through digital observation and documentation of the account’s posts, then analyzed using the Hypodermic Needle Theory and visual communication frameworks. The results of the study show that the @eye.on.palestine account uses propaganda techniques such as emotional framing, visual persuasion, religious and nationalist symbolism, and calls for public mobilization. The content is not only informative but also has a strong persuasive and performative effect in shaping global public opinion in favor of Palestine. These findings show that social media has become a strategic space for non-state actors to build narratives of resistance and international solidarity. Additionally, high user engagement, whether in the form of comments, likes, or shares, serves as an indicator of the success of the digital propaganda constructed by this account. Thus, this study confirms that social media plays an important role in global narrative conflicts, particularly in humanitarian issues such as the Palestinian conflict.

Abstract

Digital transformation has fundamentally changed the way organizations communicate, including in the context of Islamic value-based organizations. Islamic organizational communication faces the challenge of remaining technologically relevant without losing its ethical and spiritual dimensions. This study aims to synthesize various academic findings on Islamic organizational communication in the digital era using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Data were collected from 1,000 scientific publications in the last five years through the Publish or Perish application , then analyzed using the VOSviewer bibliometric tool to identify thematic patterns, temporal dynamics, and concept density. The findings show that the literature is concentrated on two main poles: structural-managerial aspects and digital da'wah communication. However, there is still fragmentation of studies and the absence of a conceptual model that systematically integrates Islamic values in digital organizational communication. This study uses two main theoretical frameworks: Cultural Approach to Organizations and Systems Theory in Organizational Communication , which together explain how Islamic communication can be seen as a system of values and symbols that are adaptive to environmental changes. The contribution of this research lies in providing a scientific synthesis that not only enriches academic discourse but also becomes a practical basis for the development of contextual, ethical, and sustainable Islamic communication strategies in the digital era. These findings are expected to be a basis for further research and the formulation of organizational communication policies based on Islamic values that are relevant to the challenges of the times.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Muslimah content creators on TikTok, particularly the @helwabaswel account, as a source of Outfit of the Day (OOTD) inspiration for students of the Islamic Communication and Broadcasting (KPI) Study Program, Faculty of Da'wah and Communication (FDK), UIN Sumatera Utara. The research aims to describe the characteristics of the OOTD content presented, analyze KPI students’ responses to the content, and assess its influence on their clothing styles. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The findings reveal that @helwabaswel’s OOTD content showcases modest fashion that aligns with Islamic principles, combining visual aesthetics, soft color trends, and subtly embedded da'wah messages. KPI students responded positively, using the content as a guide to dress stylishly yet modestly, while also motivating themselves to increase awareness of Islamic dressing. However, some informants remained critical of the commercial elements present in the content. These findings highlight that Muslimah content creators on TikTok serve not only as fashion icons but also as cultural da'wah agents, influencing the construction of identity and dress practices among young Muslim women in the university environment.
