Abstract

This research problem centers on the lexical and phonological forms of Proto Austronesian (PAN) reflected in the Teta Dialect, one of the dialects used by the people of Bima Regency. The Teta dialect has unique linguistic characteristics, but until now there has not been much research to reveal its historical relationship with languages in the Austronesian family, especially in the aspects of sound changes, lexicon and morphology. The aim of this research is to identify sound changes, meaning shifts, and morphological adaptations that occur from the protolanguage to the local dialect. This research is qualitative descriptive research consisting of primary data and secondary data. The subjects of this research are native dialect speakers. The results of this research were analyzed using the theory of sound change, a synthesis of the theories of Crowley, Keraf', and Cser'. This research shows that there are 72 etymones that have a cognate relationship between proto and Teta dialects. The 72 etymones experience 11 types of sound changes, namely; prosthesis (7 etymons), ephenthesis (2 etymons), paragoge (1 etymons), aphaeresis (1 etymons), syncope (4 etymons), apocope (20 etymons), lenition (16 etymons), fortition (13 etymons), metathesis (3 etymons), fusion (1 etymon), and monophthongization (4 etymons). These eleven types of sound changes can be said to be evidence that the Teta dialect is a legacy of Proto Austronesian. In this research, there were 3 informants in Teta village. The limitation of this research was the lack of informants who mastered the vocabulary listed on the word list. In the results of this research, the dialect in Teta village has many similarities to proto-Austronesian. The implications of this research can contribute to the study of Austronesian languages, especially in understanding the pattern of phonological and lexical changes from Proto Austronesian to Teta Dialect. The findings of this research can also be a reference for comparative studies of regional languages in West Nusa Tenggara and the surrounding region.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the language learning strategies used by students and the factors that affect the selection of these strategies in the vocational study program of the Faculty of Languages and Arts at a public university in Bali. This research uses a mixed method, namely quantitative and qualitative approaches. The participants of this study are 50 students from two study programs, namely Visual Communication Design and United Kingdom for Business and Professional Communication. Data was collected through the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0 questionnaire developed by Oxford, which has been adapted and validated by two experts. This questionnaire consists of 50 statements divided into six categories of strategies, namely memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective, and social. The results showed that the most frequently used strategy by students was the metacognitive strategy (M = 4.00), followed by cognitive and memory strategies, while the least used strategy was the affective strategy (M = 3.53). In addition, the results of this study also show that the factors of the study program, academic achievement index, and student motivation affect the use of language learning strategies. Therefore, it is important to teach students the right language learning strategies, as they can help improve their learning outcomes.

Abstract

The problem with this research is that teachers do not understand the concept of differentiated learning and assessment tailored to student's learning styles and have not appropriately identified variations in students' learning styles. This hinders the implementation of diverse learning strategies that suit students' needs. This study aims to evaluate and determine the needs of teachers and students in developing learning style-based differentiation assessment instruments. This type of research is descriptive qualitative with a case study design. The research subjects were three teachers and 17 students as pilot test subjects. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with teachers and distributing questionnaires to students. The instruments used were interview guides and learning-style questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using qualitative thematic analysis techniques. The results showed that teachers did not understand the concept of differentiated assessment and had not identified students' learning styles effectively. Based on the questionnaire, grade 6 students show significant variations in learning styles. In conclusion, differentiated assessment is urgent to meet the diversity of student learning styles. This research implies the need for teacher training in designing and implementing differentiated assessments based on student's learning styles to support more effective learning.

Abstract

Textbooks often need to portray the target culture accurately. This study aims to discover the cultural categories and how they are represented in the cultural dimensions in the “Bright an English” textbook for grade VII of junior high school. This research uses a qualitative content analysis approach. The data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using and recording data, systematic coding, category creation, and interpretation. This study resulted in two main findings. First, cultural categories were found in full in the textbooks but in unbalanced proportions. This shows the dominance of local culture and the lack of representation of international culture. Second, the representation of cultural categories in the cultural dimension also varies. Representations in the textbooks appear through textual data (words, sentences, dialogues, readings) and image data. Five cultural dimensions (products, practices, perspectives, communities, and individuals) are fully represented in the target culture and international culture through textual data. Meanwhile, in the textual data, the local culture does not show the dimension of perspective. Representation in the form of image data is fully present in the local culture. In the image data, the target culture does not show the dimensions of perspective and community, and the international culture does not show the dimensions of practice and perspective. In conclusion, there are potential imbalances in the representation of global culture that can be addressed to increase the cultural diversity presented to students.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the difficulties experienced by students in speaking English after the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the efforts of teachers in overcoming these difficulties. The main objectives of this study were to identify the difficulties faced by students in speaking English and explore the strategies implemented by teachers to overcome them. This study used a qualitative approach with observation and interview methods as primary data collection techniques. The subjects of the study consisted of 31 students of grade 8A and an English teacher. Data analysis was conducted descriptively. The results showed that the main difficulties of students in speaking English included lack of vocabulary, low levels of focus, and nervousness. To overcome these difficulties, teachers have implemented two main strategies: first, giving students time to read and understand English sentences and vocabulary; second, using visual media such as images and videos, and presenting native speakers directly. These strategies have proven effective in increasing students' focus during the learning process. The implications of this study indicate the importance of utilizing adaptive learning strategies in overcoming obstacles in English learning, especially in the post-pandemic context.
