Abstract

Abstract Reading strategies are skills under consideration which closely depend on specific reading contexts as well as reader awareness, control and intention. Strategies refer to mental actions deliberately employed to facilitate a reading process, to enhance reading comprehension and to overcome reading difficulties in order to achieve particular reading goal. The objective of this research is to find out the correlation between students’ reading comprehension and reading strategy used by the third semester of English Students of FKIP UIR. The researcher used a quantitative method. This research was conducted on October 2018. The population of this research was the third semester of English students of FKIP UIR. The sample of this research was 3d which consist of 37 students. The researcher used a questionnaire for reading strategy and reading test for reading comprehension. Based on the research findings, there was a medium correlation between students’ reading strategy used and students’ reading comprehension by the third semester of English students of FKIP UIR. The researcher found that in level significant 5% rxy > rtable = 0.662>0.325. Its means Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. In another words, there is significant relationship between students reading strategy used and students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: Reading Strategy, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This present study describes the students’ grammatical errors on spoken English based on the classifications of errors refer to Dulay, Burt and Krashen’s theories. Qualitative method was used in the study. Oral test was used as the research instrument. There were 25 participants of English education study program of Timor University who were chosen randomly as the research sample. The Tape Video Recording (TVR) was used to gain data of spoken English. There were five techniques in analyzing the data: transcription, codification, classification, analyses and discussion. The results of data analyses revealed that omission presented 40,87% of errors. Then; addition presented 31,74% and misformation presented 15%. The misorderning was categorized as the lowest score with 12,30%. In linguistic category; the data showed that verb was categorized as the highest errors which presented 19% of errors. The next error was preposition which presented 17%. Then pronouns category presented 14% of errors. The conjunction and article categories presented 11% of errors on spoken English. The singular/plural and negation categories presented 10% of errors for each category. The lowest error of linguistic category was word order which presented 8% errors. The findings showed that the students still make errors on linguistic category on spoken English. There was a phenomenon in this finding that the students tend to use verb-ing instead of using verb-1 in the spoken English. They dispose to add and omit any linguistic category unconsciously when they speak.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to produce English language teaching materials for economic education study programs with a contextual approach. This research is a research and development (R and D) which uses ADDIE development model. ADDIE stands for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The subjects of the study were students of Economic Education in class 02 PIEE 01 consisting of 30 students. The instruments used in this study are: (1) Instruments for measuring validity, including validation sheets; (2) Instruments for measuring practicality, including observer assessment sheets, student response sheets and learning implementation observation sheets; (3) Instruments for measuring effectiveness, including motivation questionnaires and learning achievement tests. The outcome of this research was learning devices in the form of module. The validation results showed that the lesson plan and module meet valid criteria with very good category. The results of field trials showed that the lesson plan and module meet practical and effective criteria. The practicality of the learning device developed reached a very good category based on observations of the implementation of learning and observer assessment, the module reached a good category based on student responses. Effectiveness reached an effective category based on the level of motivation and completeness of student learning. The percentage of the number of students who reached the high minimum category in the motivation questionnaire was 87.57% and the percentage of achievement in classical was 75%. Thus, it can be concluded that the module is effective in terms of student learning motivation.

Abstract

Abstract: The facts and phenomenon that most of senior high school students still encounter or face problems in understanding and answering the questions in reading texts led the researchers to conduct this quasi-experimental research, in line with teaching reading narrative through Inking Your Thinking strategy. This research is aimed at figuring out whether or not there is any significant difference in the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievements at SMA Negeri 2 Prabumulih among those who are taught by using Inking Your Thinking strategy and those who are not. To collect the data and to meet the objectives, the researchers used two kinds of tests (i.e. pretest and posttest) which were given to 62 students. To analyze the data, the researchers used T-test. The results of the difference analyses on experimental and control groups by using independent sample t-test showed that t-obtained was 4.839 greater than t-table which was 1.671 at the significant level p<0.05 in two tailed testing with df=60. It means that there was significant difference in students’ reading comprehension achievements among those who are taught by using Inking Your Thinking strategy and those who are not. In conclusion, Inking Your Thinking strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension achievements. Keywords: inking your thinking strategy, reading comprehension, narrative text

Abstract

The secretary students of the college in which this research conducted use Buku Pegangan Kuliah (BPK) as learning resource of English subject. Nevertheless, according to the result of analysis, the book does not cover the criteria of a good book yet that are analyzed from seven aspects including objective, content, language skill, task, topic, methodology, and presentation. The materials which are presented in the book refer to general English and tend to emphasize on grammar. However, the secretary students need specific English material that focuses on the field. This study is aimed to (1) analyze the relevancy of the existing English textbook with the students’ need; (2) describe the development of task-based English module for secretary department; (3) describe the validity of the module. This study is a research and development, which the main step is conducted in two ways. First, exploration includes library research and field research. Second, development includes product specification planning, product design, expert validation, and tryout. The specific English module is validated by an expert of teaching and learning English and an expert of secretary and office administration. The findings of the study are: (1) the materials of the existing book does not fulfill the secretary students’ need yet; (2) designing task based English module for secretary students based on the data from need analysis; (3) the result of module validation from the two experts obtains 87%, it belongs to valid and feasible to be implemented in the teaching and learning. Abstract

This study investigates the use of Translanguaging as a Pedagogical Strategy by an EFL teacher in terms of interaction between the teacher and the students in teaching and learning process. It focuses to explore the teacher’s reason for using translanguaging in EFL Classroom, and to explore the benefits of teacher’s translanguaging on students in EFL Classroom. This study applied qualitative method. Two meetings of classroom observations were recorded by using audio recorder. Also, a teacher and ten students were interviewed after the classroom observation. The recordings and interviews were transcribed and analyzed based on the teacher’s reason for using translanguaging in EFL Classroom, and the benefits of teacher’s translanguaging on students. In the research findings there were three kinds of languages namely English as the Foreign language, Indonesia as the national language, and Konjo as the local language that used by the teacher and students in practice of translanguaging during teaching and learning process in EFL Classroom. Therefore, there were four teacher’s reason used translanguaging in EFL Classroom. Furthermore, there were six benefits of teacher’s translanguaging on students in EFL Classroom

Abstract

This study aims at exploring the phenomenon of Javanese language shift among lecturers and staffs at IAIN Kudus and their possible motives. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach and the data were taken from the interview, observation and focus group discussion. The results indicate that the use of Indonesian of male lecturers and male staffs is less striking shift than female ones. Indeed, female lecturers and female staffs tend to have a strong preference for using Indonesian rather than Javanese. This could be caused by the effect of globalization, the increased use of other languages, social changes, mobility, and modernity. The motives of language shift among the female lecturers and female staffs are the language used in a formal education is Indonesian and the increase of technology particularly in relation to social media use Indonesian as a medium to deliver information.

Abstract

This research aims at improving students’ writing performance on narrative text by using digital application namely edmodo. The method of the research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The actions were implemented in a cycle. The researcher collaborates with the English teacher as the collaborator in conducting the research. The participants of the research were 20 students of grade tenth Administrasi Perkantoran 1 of SMK Nurul Falah Pekanbaru. The data were taken by using test, observation checklist, field note, and interview. After analyzing the data, it is found that the use of edmodo in writing narrative text activity was able to improve the students’ writing performance. In the other hand, the students were able to generate idea, identify and use various vocabularies, use the appropriate language use and mechanics. The data shows that the students’ score was 80.85. It was improved significantly from the students’ previous daily score, 69. There were several factors that influence the improvement. They are the media, learning activity, and teacher’s ability toward the application usage. Digital application edmodo is an interesting media that can catch the students’ attention so that the students were focus on the use of the media. Learning activity by using edmodo can improve the students’ enthusiasm. They enjoyed learning to write through edmodo with no worry of being mistake. The teachers’ capability of using edmodo motivated and help students to be creative in writing.

Abstract

This research analyzes the women language features in giving public speeches in RECODE World’s Technology Conferences. The writer used Lakoff’s on Holmes (2013) theory to analyze the data. The writer applies descriptive qualitative method by Creswell (2014). Data for this reseach is women utterance during conference. Basen on theory by Lakoff, the author discover six women language features.The result of this research shown that there are six women language feature that appear, there are lexical hedges, intensifier, superpolite form, avoidance strong swear, empty adjective, and emphatic stress. Keyword: sociolinguistics, gender language, women language features.

Abstract

Based on the English syllabus of SMA Serirama YLPI Pekanbaru, the students should be able to write in English by paying attention to the linguistics elements. One of them is the use of writing mechanics. This study aimed at investigating students’ ability in applying writing mechanics in Analytical Exposition texts and explained the factors that influence students’ ability in applying writing mechanics in the eleventh grade of SMA Serirama YLPI Pekanbaru. The design of this research was mixed method. The population of this research was all the eleventh grade students of SMA Serirama YLPI Pekanbaru with total of 41 students. Sampling technique used in this research was total sampling. The instruments used were test and interview. Based on the result of the test, the average score of students’ ability in applying writing mechanics in an Analytical Exposition text was 71,56. Moreover, based on the interview result, the factors that influence the students’ ability in applying writing mechanics were the students lack of motivation to open dictionary to find the correct spelling of words, the difference between the pronunciation and written of words make students confused, and lack of student knowledge about writing mechanics. In conclusion, the students’ ability in applying writing mechanics in an Analytical Exposition text at the eleventh grade of SMA Serirama YLPI Pekanbaru is categorized into fair level caused by several factors.
