Abstract

This research was aimed at improving writing skill in narrative texts by using storybird for Grade X Teknik Komputer Jaringan 1 students of SMK Yayasan Pendidikan Persada Indah (YPPI) Tualang, Kabupaten Siak in the academic year of 2017/2018. This particular research was categorized as action research. The actions were implemented in two cycles based on the class schedule. The researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher, as the collaborator and the students. The subjects of the research were 20 students of class X Teknik Komputer Jaringan 1 of SMK Yayasan Pendidikan Persada Indah (YPPI) Tualang, Kabupaten Siak in the academic year of 2017/2018. The data of the study were taken by using test, observation checklist, field note, and interview. The research findings showed that the use of storybird in teaching writing narrative texts was able to improve the students’ writing skills. It included their abilities in generating ideas, vocabularies, language use and mechanics. Based on the quantitative data, the students’ based score was 71.70 and increased into 72.30 in the test of Cycle I and became 85.30 in the test of Cycle II. Then, the gain score was 13 points. There were several factors that influence the improvement, such as the students’ interest with social media like storybird. They enjoyed writing narrative text in storybird and being more creative. Besides, teaching writing narrative texts using storybird could attract students’ attention and motivation. The students became more enthusiastic in writing after using storybird in the class It indicated that the students made a considerable improvement in writing narrative texts.

Abstract

The research aims to know the effectiveness of the PQRST strategy in students’ reading comprehension. This research was classroom action research (CAR). This study design by 4 meetings and one result with 3 hours of learning. The subjects were the first grade students of TKJ Department SMKN 05 Pekanbaru consisted of 35 students. Qualitative data were collected by using observation sheets for the researcher and the students, field notes and interview. Then, the quantitative data were collected by reserving in table, graphic, and diagram. After conducting this research using PQRST strategy, researcher got based score was 65 and final scoring 79. The based score was 65 to 79 with increasing point was 14 point. The quantitative data were analyzed by scoring the results of reading comprehension tests and then the results of scoring were calculated to find out the central tendency (mean) for describing improvement of each indicator of reading comprehension in each cycle. During the one cycle, the results of quantitative analysis were related to the results of qualitative analysis in order to explain the factors that cause the improvement qualitatively, The factors increase students ‘reading comprehension included teacher, team work and strategy. Based on result, Researcher concluded that PQRST can improve the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research was based on the students’ problem in reading comprehension of narrative text, especially in generic structure, purpose, language features and vocabulary. The purpose of this research was to improve reading comprehension in narrative text. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research consisted of five meetings in one cycle. This research conducted on March 2018. Based on the test result, it was found that the average score of cycle was 80, 09. Furthermore, the data about factors that influence the students’ improvement in reading comprehension in narrative text were obtained by interview, observation checklist, and field note. The factors were interested of media, students’ enjoy and fun during learning process and this strategy was easily to comprehend. In conclusion, the use of FLIP strategy can improve students reading comprehension in narrative text.

Abstract

Grammar is like a mother of English Language competence which affects all competences in English language proficiency such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. Even though it has been learnt for 9 years by the first semester students’, grammar still becomes a big problem to be mastered. If so, the lecturer should develop epic instructional media based the students’ need and interest to solve this problem. This research is a part of R & D (research and Development) design which only focuses on students’ need analysis. The participant of this research 1B (first semester students) which numbered 38 students. The students are given a questionnaire to be answered to find out the target needs which consist of students’ lack, students’ necessity and the students’ want. This research reveals that results are 76,3% target needs of students (lacks), 76,3% the target needs of students (necessity) and 78,9 % target needs of students (wants).

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether or not it is significantly effective to teach reading comprehension by using Predict, Locate, Add Note strategy to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau in the academic year of 2016/2017. The researcher used pre experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was all the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau which consisted of 440 students. The sample was taken through cluster random sampling. The sample was 40 students. The data was collected through test consisted of 20 items of multiple choices. The data were analyzed through four techniques: 1) students’ individual score, 2) minimum mastery criteria, 3) normality, and 4) matched t-test calculation. The result of this research: (1) the mean students’ score in the pre-test was 62.3, (2) The mean score of post-test was 77.3, and (3) the result of Matched t-test was 10.86, which was higher than 1.684 value of the t-table of 39 (40-1) with 95% significant level for one tailed-test. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that it was significantly effective to teach reading comprehension by using Predict, Locate, Add Note Strategy to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau in academic year of 2016/2017.

Abstract

This research was conducted at MTs Negeri 2 Pekanbaru based on phenomenon that most of the students were less vocabulary. The purpose of this research was to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery by using ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method as a teaching method and factor that influence it. The research was a Classroom Action Research. The total number of the sample was 30 students at grade VIII.1 of MTs Negeri 2 Pekanbaru. The researcher did the research in one cycle (five meetings including the test). The data was collected by using vocabulary test, observation checklist, and field notes. There was improvement from based score to cycle 1. In the based score, noun was 65.32, verb was 69.32, adjective 65.32, and adverb was 66.64 with average score 66.67. The result of cycle 1, noun 74.64, and verb was 81.32, adjective was 76.64, and adverb was 82.This research, showed that there were some factors influencing their improvement. The students were engaged in activities, having fun, and active in learning process. The teacher’s approach in explaining material was clear enough and classroom condition as well as method supported the learning achievement. After conducting this research by using ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method improved in cycle 1. Referring to the result, researcher concluded that ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Reading is one of four basic skills which should be mastered by English majoring students. They are demanded to be able to gain information all kinds of texts well since their learning material and references were taken from English written book. In fact students had problem with motivation, limited vocabulary, and background knowledge. This research is a descriptive research. The purpose of the research was to find out the students’ competence in using reference in reading technical text. The subject of the research was thirteen students of fourth semester of 2017/2018 ABA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The instrument used to collect the data was reading test in the form of multiple choice tests. The result were analyzed to find out the level of students’ competence in using reference in technical text. From the finding, it was found that: (1) The students’ competence in using personal reference in thechnical text was in good category. They had problems with motivation and lack of background knowledge in mastering personal reference (2) the students’ competence in using demonstratives reference in narrative texts was in good category. The problems occurred because they had limited vocabulary and lack of motivation. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ competence in using reference in technical text still needed to be improved because they still had limited vocabulary and lack of motivation.

Abstract

Bilingualism and multilingualism are common phenomena in language use. Those who are bilinguals or multilingual normally get the language competence because they are living in multilingual area, or in a country which has variety of languages and cultures. Indonesia is one of countries which have this wide diversity in cultures, languages, and religions. Furthermore, Indonesian Ministry of Education created a program called Darmasiswa program which enabled students from abroad to study Bahasa Indonesia and Indonesian cultures. By following this program, those students are learning new language and culture in multilingual situation. One of evidences occurred with a student from America, named Angela who also has multilingual family background. She was exposed to a lot of languages since she was born, and she also studied new languages in Indonesia, as a result she has capability to speak more than two languages. In this kind of situation, the researcher was interested to find out the language loss she might experience during her study. This study aimed to find factors influenced on language loss by her. The approach of this study was qualitative. The researcher applied mixed techniques to obtain data; recording the conversations in natural setting and interview. The analysis was interpretive. The findings of this study found that there were two factors that influenced language loss; internal factors and external factors, which dominated by cultural factor. Also, it happened because of the fact that Bahasa Indonesia is more dominant than her mother tongues.

Abstract

Based on the result of observation that students got some difficulties to understand the content of reading comprehension, particularly main ideas, detail information, vocabulary, identify information, word reference and generic structure. The purpose of this research was to find whether the students who received in class experiment of repeated reading strategy had different skill in reading comprehension than students who did not receive treatment of the strategy at the second grade of SMPN 36 Pekanbaru. The design of this research was Experimental Research. This research was conducted on Jan 2018. The population of this research was the second grade of SMPN 36 Pekanbaru. The sample of this research were 2 classes as control and experiment class. Based on the test result, it was found that the average score of post-test was 85.33 and pre test was 71. It means that the result of post test was getting higher than pretest. In conclusion, the use of repeated reading strategy could increase students reading comprehension in narrative text. There was different ability between experment and control class.

Abstract

This research aimed at describing the factors influence the students’ learning outcome in Translation Subject by using Android. This research conducted at the fourth semester of English Department of Education and Teachers Training Faculty of Universitas Lancang Kuning. The sample of this research is 30 % of the total number of the population, they are about 7 students. The method of this research is descriptive analysis. Before getting the data by interviewing the students and observation during teaching and learning process of Translation Subject by using android, they had got a test of translating an English text into bahasa Indonesia. Finally, it is found that there are three factors influence the students learning outcome in translation subject by using android. They are motivated media, learning atmosphere, and easy access.
