Abstract

Multi-faceted problems require diverse, creative responses from the church and Christian leaders. Deeper theological engagement is necessary to facilitate the work of reconciliation. This article explores in depth the concept of shalom and its theological reflections in the work of reconciliation. To analyze and address this issue, the researcher employed an appreciative inquiry approach, emphasizing that theology must be developed appreciatively, highlighting not only redemptive theology but also creation theology. The study was conducted in two stages: first, an exploration of the meaning of shalom from a biblical perspective; and second, the construction of theological reflections. The findings of this study are threefold. First, theological reflection on shalom leads the church to view Jesus as the ultimate source of shalom. Therefore, the church is called to strengthen the vertical relationship of its members with God. Second, the church’s concrete actions in the world must be grounded in the values of shalom rather than merely humanitarian agendas. This foundation is rooted in both redemptive and creation theology, working hand in hand to call the church toward restoring human relationships and the created order. Third, the ultimate goal of a shalom community is the realization of justice, love, reconciliation, and hope for the future.

Abstract

This paper critically examines the use of ‘tolerance’ as one of the four indicators in the Indonesian government’s Religious Moderation policy. Since the familiarisation of this idea in 2019, some Christian scholars have widely echoed it, even trying to integrate it with the Bible and Christian values in the practical work of interfaith relations. For us, tolerance is still passive, and this is contrary to Christian teachings or the Bible, which demands that Christians constantly be proactive, including in terms of living together with 'those who are different'. Through this article, we argue that the concept of ‘hospitality’ is a more active and fitting concept for promoting interreligious relations than the indicator appointed by the Indonesian government, ‘tolerance’. We also strongly emphasise that intentional hospitality can be a paradigm of living together in a more biblical and Christian interfaith relationship. In this work, we use a methodology that includes the following components: literature review, theoretical analysis, and critical reflection. By critically reviewing the work of theologians, Amos Yong and Marianne Moyaert, we constructively propose research findings in the five key characteristics of a hospitable interreligious connection: recognition, imagination, transformation, commitment, and intention. These characters, emphatically, demonstrate active involvement and sincere relationships with others, particularly individuals from other faiths.

Abstract

Indonesia is grappling with the complex challenge of managing its forests in a truly sustainable way. Problems such as land degradation, widening socio-economic gaps, and ongoing environmental damage not only threaten the well-being of local communities but also put at risk the country’s rich biodiversity that is vital to the world. Although social forestry programs in Indonesia hold tremendous promise, their implementation often overlooks the integration of traditional ecological wisdom and theological perspectives—elements that could enrich and strengthen current forest management practices. This study proposes the integration of principles from the Torah, emphasizing stewardship, biodiversity preservation, and justice, along with insights from ecotheology, to inform sustainable social forestry management in Indonesia. Drawing on religious texts, theological insights, and contemporary environmental scholarship, this research explores how the teachings of the Torah and ecotheological perspectives can be applied to enhance social forestry practices. Case studies from Israel, along with initiatives led by Catholic and Protestant churches in Indonesia, demonstrate how religious values can be woven into environmental conservation. By integrating Torah principles and ecotheological perspectives into social forestry, forest management can evolve into a more holistic practice—one that not only protects the environment but also nurtures social cohesion and spiritual well-being. Applying these principles paves the way for sustainable forestry in Indonesia, while at the same time uplifting local communities and safeguarding nature for future generations.

Abstract

This article is designed with the aim of tracing Esther's example in suing for justice in the face of power. Queen Esther's courage in the Book of Esther, especially her action against King Ahasuerus without an invitation, is a representation of courage against potential injustice. Queen Esther's courage was not blind courage but courage with wise strategy. This study looks at how Esther's actions have affected modern leadership and how courage and wisdom can serve as examples for Christian communities and leaders today. This study can inspire modern leadership to dare to declare an injustice lawsuit against the rulers. The research uses the method of religious research to respond to the injustice in the face of power that threatened the Jewish nation under the rule of King Ahasuerus. The results of this study show that fighting injustice must be accompanied by a wise strategy and trust in God's providence for the Jewish nation by returning to moral principles and values. This research contributes in the form of a theological reflection for Christian women to emulate Esther in facing injustice in Indonesia.

Abstract

Yogyakarta, the designated research locus, is recognized as a leading student city, with a substantial academic community consisting of hundreds of universities and hundreds of thousands of students from various geographical locations throughout Indonesia. This condition gives rise to various social dynamics that must be addressed in relation to urgent spiritual issues. The students, who are new adults (18-25 years old) and the subjects of this study, often face a variety of social, emotional, and spiritual challenges associated with this age group's high rate of release in activities and communities of faith. As a result, there is an emerging need to provide related services that prioritize outreach to students, especially in the context of urban settings. This study uses a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach to examine the phenomenon of religious practice in a local church in Yogyakarta that has shown the capacity to develop socialization services for young people.  The findings of this study show the importance of understanding the cognitive, social, and emotional development aspects of students as young adults. The personal perceptions and experiences of the study respondents highlighted the needs addressed during their involvement in the faith communities studied. These findings were then formulated into a mission-church-type model for reaching students in urban contexts. The model is based on the following: the adoption of an inclusive community model, the provision of dynamic discipleship, the delivery of relevant teaching, and the implementation of empowerment services.

Abstract

Mepopoidulu is a significant cultural practice among the Bada people in Poso, Indonesia, reflecting deep social and spiritual values. This study aimed to examine how Mepopoidulu could be theologically contextualised through the approaches of “Faithful Contextualization” and “Global Contextualization.” The research employed a qualitative, descriptive method with contextual hermeneutics to analyse five core components of the tradition. The findings indicated that values such as the sanctity of life, marital holiness, social ethics, gratitude, and restorative justice, embedded in Mepopoidulu, aligned with a Christian worldview. The study contributed to the discourse on indigenous contextual theology by proposing Mepopoidulu as a medium for gospel communication that remains faithful to Scripture while embracing cultural integrity.

Abstract

Jonathan Edwards was a colonial pastoral leader and theologian in the United States. Edwards is considered one of the greatest American theologians, excelling as a preacher; however, his importance as a theological educator has received little attention. This conceptual article examines the significance of his educational legacy for Christian educators in the twenty-first century. Edwards espoused holistic theological education with an emphasis on the heart and affections. At the same time, however, he supported slavery, contradicting his theological anthropology. As Christian educators, we would benefit from receiving his invitations, imitating his faith, and learn from his mistakes.

Abstract

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic continues to increase its spread. The government has made efforts to contain the space by enacting several health protocols by March 2020. However, many Indonesians have not followed through on this appeal, and this situation also occurs in the context of the church. The Covid-19 pandemic is predicted to subside at the end of August or early September 2020, but this has not been realized. The authors observe the phenomenon of failure to recognize this due to a lack of adherence to health protocols. Obedience is an important principle that needs to be understood and implemented by all Indonesian people, especially Christians and church leaders. This research used the descriptive method to identify the phenomenon to get to the main problem, namely the concept of obedience. This research got the theological formulation of obedience to the government, namely priestly service, political service, and submission to government policies that have justice and humanity values.  ABSTRAKPandemi Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) terus meningkat penyebarannya.

Abstract

Of all categorical ministry, men’s ministry are not as actively involved in the church ministry as others do. This article discusses the ways to strengthen men’s ministry role in the Batak Protestant Christian Church (HKBP) in present day through cultural approach. The research used cultural analogy approach. Data were collected by using observation and interviews. In analyzing the data, the researcher employed relevant literature sources such as books and journal articles. The research shows that the elements of Batak principles of Dalihan Na Tolu upholding a Batak person and his/her families of Hula-hula, Dongan Tubu, and Boru were found to be still relevant. The principle’s framework could be used as an approach to strengthen role of male church parishioners in the church by associating it with another three elements: the Church, Bibel (the Bible), and the family. Thus, Dalihan Na Tolu as a cultural principle is applicable to church ministry setting by association of: (1) the organized Church to Hula-hula, (2) the family to Boru, and (3) Bibel as Dongan Tubu

Abstract

The issue of Christianity and the local culture has been a discussion that continues to flourish. The issue of the challenge of preaching the Gospel, which was considered incompatible with the spirituality of the local community, has been contested since the first century. Paul, as an apostle, faced the challenge of preaching the gospel because of the exclusivity of early Christianity. This article is aimed at explaining Paul's teachings in 1 Corinthians 9:1-23 from a missiological point of view. This article is aimed at describing how Paul carried out his missionary work in a society of diverse cultures and spiritualities. The author intends to explain it through an exegesis that emphasizes the passage's historical, grammatical, and contextual aspects. Missionary work is a noble task from God. Cultural diversity requires missionaries to be flexible with cultural conditions without compromising the values of biblical theology. The mission does not have to uproot a person from his or her culture but can provide a new interpretation of that culture according to Christian truth. While giving new meaning to culture, the material of the mission must be Christocentric. Flexibility to local culture can reduce the level of resistance from local communities.
