Abstract

This article examines the concept of saintliness (wali) from the perspectives of scholars and the local community in Dalam Pagar Village, Martapura, South Kalimantan. Within the context of Sufism, the notion of saintliness is an intriguing topic that requires in-depth understanding. This research utilizes a qualitative descriptive method, with a focus on fieldwork conducted in Dalam Pagar, where this phenomenon occurs. The research findings reveal that the views of scholars and the local community align with the general understanding within Sufism. They regard saintliness as a result of devoted practice of Islamic Sharia, unwavering faith, and profound piety. Furthermore, the social behaviors of the people in Pagar support this perspective. The community warmly welcomes the presence of saints or individuals considered to have the potential for saintliness, especially when there is endorsement and recognition from respected scholars or spiritual leaders. This recognition is reflected in various forms of reverence, such as pilgrimages, commemorative gatherings (haul), and the display of images or photographs of saints in their homes. However, it is important to note that the community also exercises caution regarding individuals who lack clear legitimacy as saints. This caution becomes more significant in the absence of official endorsement from recognized religious authorities. In conclusion, the concept of saintliness in Sufism significantly influences the culture of the community in Dalam Pagar Martapura. The perspectives of scholars and the behaviors of the community regarding saintliness reflect a traditional understanding rooted in faith, piety, and the practice of Islamic Sharia. Moreover, the legitimacy provided by religious authorities plays a pivotal role in solidifying someone's status as a saint in the eyes of the community.

Abstract

This research deeply explores the interpretation of fiqh verses in the book 'Sabilal Muhtadin' authored by Sheikh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari and its connection to the Banjar community. The book, an extensive exploration of the Syafii school of thought, intricately weaves together fiqh, hadith, and Qur'anic interpretation. Analyzing over 184 traditions across two volumes, al-Banjari not only references renowned scholars but also introduces independent perspectives on Islamic law. His method of interpreting legal verses, incorporating vocabulary analysis and Prophet Traditions, showcases a comprehensive understanding deeply rooted in scholarly tradition. Moreover, this research highlights the fusion of various interpretative styles within Sabilal Muhtadin, positioning it as an amalgamation of textual evidence and reasoned analysis—a unique contribution to the realm of Islamic jurisprudence. The category of tafsir is characterized by fiqhi and the method is divided into three; tafsir with history, tafsir with ra'yu (linguistic analysis, kias and logical reasoning), and combined tafsir (idzdiwaji).

Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of strengthening radicalism in the campus involving students and lecturers. The findings of several studies confirm an increasing trend of radicalism among students. The purpose of this research is to answer the main issue of the research which is to find out radicalism among public and religious college students. This research is field research, data and information obtained directly in the field, using quantitative methods. Data collection techniques through a closed questionnaire (closed questionnaire) using a Likert Scale. A number of universities in Java and Kalimantan were sampled in this study. This research found that radicalism among public and religious college students fluctuated with narrative responses at the level of soft radicalism. However, the narrative of radicalism is so strong in understanding, but tends to show a downward trend in attitudes and behavior. The idea of applying Islamic law is still the main choice for most respondents, but it is inversely related to the response to the application of the caliphate. Prohibition of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) organization is effective in reducing the attitude and behavior of radicalism among students.

Abstract

South Kalimantan is not only rich in natural resources, but also rich in culture and religious values. This study aims to describe the local cultural traditions and Islam associated with the activity of "diamond" gemstone panning, which is one of the natural resources of South Kalimantan, as well as to examine the cultural changes in the diamond panning tradition. The research method used is a qualitative ethnographic method. Data analysis from observations, interviews and documents from diamond panners was conducted using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results showed that the local and Islamic cultures of the Banjar people were found before panning, during panning and after panning diamonds. Local culture such as visiting thieves, maintaining abstinence and speech (pamandiran) and Islamic culture such as visiting the pious, reading prayers, reading shalawat, faith, patience and tawakkal. Some of these traditions have changed, especially in the local culture, including the tools used for panning. Social change in panning activities is an evolutionary change where the shift in cultural traditions occurs slowly to adapt to internal and external factors so that the balance of the social system is maintained where malim, pious people, bosses/capital owners, panners perform their duties according to to their functions for the sustainability of panning activities. Abstract

The interpretation, understanding, and practice of Islam have always been subject to diversity, with some adherents adopting a rigid, textual, and even "ferocious" stance, leading to their characterization as intolerant, extreme, radical, and even terrorist. In contrast, others adopt a softer, more flexible, and contextual approach. A pivotal factor influencing this distinction is the method of information acquisition. The Generation Z (Gen-Z) cohort, born between 1995 and 2012, is currently entering the prepubertal and pubertal phases of self-identity exploration and ideological turmoil. As the digital generation, they are immersed in an era of abundant information, including that pertaining to Islam. On the one hand, this heightened religious consciousness motivates Gen-Z to strive for piety by studying Islam through various means; on the other hand, the pursuit of piety is rigid and not local, suggesting a religiousness that is also radical. This research was conducted in South Kalimantan among a sample of Gen-Z aged 18-24 who are students. The objective of this study is to ascertain the degree to which Gen-Z in South Kalimantan appreciate and actualize wasathiyah Islam, or, conversely, whether they are religious but radical. This research is of an exploratory nature, employing a field study approach. The data collected through questionnaires addressed the level of religious consciousness, the manner in which values and Islamic teachings are lived, the means of expressing Islam, and the sources of Islamic learning utilized. The data was analyzed through simple statistical calculations and presented descriptively as a measurement of central tendency. The results indicate that, in general, Gen-Z members do not recognize the radical tendencies in their views and attitudes, particularly within a Muslim-majority community.
