Abstract

Over the last few decades, scholars concerned with language and education have studied the relationship between adolescents’ attitudes and foreign language learning. This topic has been an important area of study in the field of applied linguistics predominantly from a psychological perspective. This research used secondary data from the Young Life and Times (YLT) and employed a descriptive qualitative research with a cross-sectional design. The Chi-Square test was used in order to test the five hypotheses proposed in this study. This present study found that gender and residential locations were significant factors relating to the 16-year old adolescents’ attitudes toward learning a foreign language. Conversely, this study found that there was no statistically significant evidence of differences among the other three variables (the family affluence, school types attended and religions) in relation to the young people’s attitudes to the foreign language. This finding may be useful as a reflection of how the current modern language learning policy is implemented and how teenagers, especially in the context of Northern Ireland, respond to the policy.Keywords: Adolescents’ Attitudes, Learning, foreign language learning

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the English needs of Tour and Travel Department at Vocational High School Negeri 1 and Vocational High School Negeri 7 in Bengkulu City. The research used mixed method and convergent parallel design. The sample of this research consisted of three groups of respondents. First group was students, consisted of 28 active students and 4 alumni. Second group was English teachers, consisted of 2 English teachers. The third group was stakeholders, consisted of two heads of the Tour and Travel Department, two assistances of curriculum, hotel, and tour staffs. The data of this research were gathered by using adapted questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively and interview was analyzed qualitatively. The data were combined by using convergent parallel design. Results of this research indicated that listening and speaking are the two prioritized skills needed by the tour and travel department. Topics of speaking which has the greatest importance are flight reservation, prices and payment, tourist destination, tourist attraction, direction, and booking hotels. Topics of listening which has the greatest importance are flight reservation, booking hotels, direction, job interview, complaints, and cultural tourism.  Topics of reading which has the greatest importance are memos, letters, cultural tourism, handling a complaint, and tourism terms. Topics of writing which has the greatest importance are rules and regulation, instruction.

Abstract

This research explained about language styles which used in stand-up comedy script brought by Chris Rock. Chris Rock owns famous joke material that is affected by the black comedy pioneers like Richard Pryor and Redd. He attacked the subject of much avoided by comics such as politics, race and celebrity. Openness and honesty witch extremely bold that what makes Chris Rock as one of the most successful and a famous comic in modern comedy. Chris Rock is known for his insulting comedian, he is also known for using satire and surreal in his joke. Language style has several functions in its uses. Stand up comedy brought by Chris Rock is usually shows about the different in human right between black and white skin.Based on the description above, the researcher decided to research language style in stand-up comedy brought by Chris Rock. In this research the researcher uses Keraf (2007) to analyze the language styles. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. This research source of data is stand-up comedy script with tittle “kill the messenger” brought by Chris Rock. Based on research, there are 2 language styles used in “kill the messenger”, there are 10 rhetorical language styles and 17 figurative language styles. Based on the data, hyperbole rhetorical language style is dominantly used in “kill the messenger”. And Epithet figurative language is dominantly used too.The reason is because Chris Rock is still try to persuade the white skin American to be humble to black skin American and must respect to each other. Keywords: Language Styles, Humor, Stand-Up Comedy

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the effect of using listening logs through WhatsApp on listening comprehension of EFL students in the Department of English Education of Palangka Raya University. The listening comprehension of students is categorized low which hampers their proficiency in English. Then an experiment is done to improve students’ comprehension in listening skill by using listening logs through WhatsApp application on smartphones. The experiment treated in this study was to make a learning group of WhatsApp by inviting the students joining the group. The experiment was held for three weeks which practiced four aspects of listening comprehension: (1) identifying main ideas or main gists, (2) identifying supporting details, (3) identifying moods of message, and (4) developing new vocabularies. There were 40 students (24 females and 16 males) fulfilling the sample of the study taken from the second year EFL students of English study program at Palangka Raya University. The method used in this study was pre-experimental design by choosing the type of one group pretest-posttest design. The pretest and posttest evaluation results were analyzed using non-parametric test of Wilcoxon Signed-ranks by two-related samples statistical analysis to find out the significance of the experiment given. The study concludes that the practice of listening through listening logs in WhatsApp gives significant improvement in listening comprehension to EFL learners.Keywords: listening logs, WhatsApp, EFL students

Abstract

The objective of this research is to explain how the Master and Mastery cards game improves students’ vocabulary acquisition and participation learning process of applying Master and Mastery cards game in teaching vocabulary for tenth-grade students of a vocational school. This research was carried out with a classroom action research design. Field notes were the instruments to collect the qualitative data. While the vocabulary test and gained the quantitative data that strengthen the quantitative data. The increasing of the test 1 and test 2 was 22.83 point. Responding to that result the teacher-researcher decided to stop the cycle at cycle two. According to the researcher and co-observer’s observation students participated actively while playing Master and Mastery vocabulary cards game. This research significantly increased students’ vocabulary acquisition as well as participation.Keywords: Master and Mastery Cards Game, Vocabulary Acquisition, Participation

Abstract

This research was analyze and discuss the pattern in conversation. Applied pattern of conversation is unpredictable, it is drawn the section and topics which used by participants. The objectives are drawn pattern of topic change, find out clues and describe aspect that influenced pattern of topic change in conversation. The method of this research was qualitative research, the data collected by recording and transcribing. The participants are Singaporean and Indonesian, the data are conversation both director and secretary. Data analyzed through ethnography methodology in communication and conversation analysis. Weather, this condition was quite different to the theory. First is pattern of topic change in formal conversation quite different to the previous study and theory. There found important section in each topic. This conclusion where has not explained before. Second is aspect influencing pattern of topic change are dominant participants, context, relation and time. The emphasis findings are there found several differences of pattern in topic change at the formal context. The important aspect is dominant participants. It was controlling of the conversation also take role in topic change. These results may affect by the background knowledge of the participants and the context of the conversation.Keywords:Topic changes, pattern in conversation and aspect influencing topic change

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the types of grammatical cohesion, as well as to describe the realizations of grammatical cohesion used in international newspapers. The data of this research were clauses, phrases, and words. This study departed from the theory of grammatical cohesion from Halliday & Hasan (1976) and the theory of conjunctive system by Halliday & Matthiesen (2014). The sources of data were Thai Cave Rescue news in British Broadcasting Corporation, Russia Today, France 24, Voice of America and China Central Television newspapers. The method used in this research was qualitative. It provided the types that reference (43%) was predominant with personal and comparative reference, was realized by anaphoric and cataphoric. Conjunction (42%) with the additive, temporal, adversative, matter, clarifying, conditional, varying and cause conjunction, was realized by the conjunctive system. Substitution (10%) with nominal and verbal substitution was realized by replacing one item by another. Ellipsis (5%) with clausal and nominal ellipsis, was realized by eluding a noun, verb or clause and recovering it by referring to an element in the preceding text. The finding revealed that the news texts seldom use other types of the grammatical cohesion especially the use of ellipsis and substitution which were possible to be used in writing because most researchers stated that both ellipsis and substitution were commonly found in speaking.Keywords:grammatical cohesion, Thai cave rescue news, international newspaper

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to find out whether the illustrated flashcards have positive effect on the motivation to increase English vocabulary among elementary school fourth grade students. The problem of this study is why students of elementary school fourth-grade still find difficulties in understanding and comprehending the English material and especially that for vocabulary. The result of the analysis shows that there is a significance difference between the motivation to learn English vocabulary among the elementary school fourth-grade students before the implementation of flashcards and that after the implementation (76,6%), and there is a significant difference between English vocabulary mastery of elementary school fourth-grade students taught by using flashcards and that of those taught without using flashcards(t=7,74).

Abstract

Nowdays, there are many translation problems although software application to assist translation are available. The objectives of this research were to identify types of error in translation, students’ difficulties in translating text, and factors which influence students’ error in translating in English department of State Institute for Islamic Studies Bengkulu. This research  used descriptive quantitative method. The results of this research showed that students’ difficulties in translating English text, were elliptical errors (67.29%), idioms (87.5%), and textual meaning (73.54).  The difficulties of students in translating were  lack of vocabulary (87,50%), difficult translating Islamic texts (75,00%), literary works (66,66%), and grammatical issues (62,50%). Then, the factors affected students’ error in translation were ignorance of ellipsis; unable to identify ellipsis, idiom, and lexical meaning; lack of strategy in translating ellipsis,  idiom, and lexical meaning; translating words per word; most students lack a strong background on the content of the text. It was concluded that the students got three types of error in transalation, four points difficulties in translation, and six factors which influence the students’ error in translation.Keywords: Translation, difficulties, and English text

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of the study "The study of the use of popular novels to improve reading interest and English proficiency" is to find out how teachers, parents and students views on popular novels especially KKPK and Teen Lit novels. KKPK and Teen-Lit novels are easily available anywhere and favored by children and adolescents are interesting topic to study The research method is descriptive qualitative. The results show that the novels have many positive impacts. In terms of language, help to develop language and vocabulary. In terms of emotions, help to develop emotional intelligence. In terms of English, help students to learn the structure of sentences and apply them in social media. To increase reading interest, any subject of reading will be better for students while performed it regularly with parents or teachers, without any disruption such as gadgets or television.    Keywords: KKPK, teen-lit,novels, reading interest, English proficiency
