Abstract

This article proposes an interdisciplinary framework that bridges Marxist political ecology and Islamic ethics to address ecological injustice in Muslim-majority contexts. Existing scholarship reveals a critical research gap: while political ecology particularly John Bellamy Foster’s theory of the metabolic rift diagnoses capitalism as the systemic driver of ecological degradation, it often overlooks the spiritual and ethical dimensions of human nature relations. Conversely, Islamic environmental thought emphasizes the theological values of stewardship (khalīfah), justice (‘adl), and balance (mīzān), yet tends to lack a rigorous structural critique of capitalist modes of production and consumption. To overcome this epistemic divide, the study synthesizes these two perspectives into a hybrid model of ecological justice that is both structurally critical and spiritually grounded. Theoretically, it advances political ecology by reintroducing religion not merely as moral discourse but as an analytical category capable of shaping socio-ecological critique. Practically, it outlines four domains of implementation: (1) ecological justice policies through environmental zakat and waqf; (2) integration of eco-ethical principles into Islamic education; (3) mosque-centered community empowerment; and (4) the adoption of green technologies aligned with sustainability (istidāmah). This integrated framework enriches global sustainability debates by offering a non-secular paradigm rooted in Islamic ethical thought, while positioning Indonesia as a potential model for environmentally responsible Muslim societies that combine structural reform with moral transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the meaning of multicultural education in the Qur’an through Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic epistemology and to examine its implications for global ethical principles. Using a descriptive-analytical library research design, the study demonstrates that Izutsu’s semantic framework, comprising the identification of key concepts, basic meanings, relational meanings, historical meanings, and the Qur’anic Weltanschauung, is highly relevant for uncovering the Qur’an’s vision of multiculturalism. The analysis shows that key terms such as syuʿūban, qabāʾila, alsinatikum, and alwānikum are interconnected within a complex semantic network. This interconnection reveals a universal semantic transformation in which these terms shift from narrow pre-Qur’anic connotations to an inclusive worldview that regards ethnic, linguistic, and racial diversity as signs of divine greatness and as foundations for strengthening human relationships (li-taʿārafū), rather than as sources of division. The reconstruction of the Qur’an’s internal semantic network ultimately forms a worldview grounded in equality, dignity, and human brotherhood, where moral worth is determined by piety rather than physical or social identity. The findings further highlight that principles such as tolerance, justice, equality, and humanity emerge as inseparable components of the Qur’anic Weltanschauung, offering a strong philosophical basis for multicultural education rooted in sacred text and oriented toward collective well-being

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the Tarekat Qadiriyah Naqsyabandiyah (TQN) Suryalaya in fostering social solidarity among the residents of Gunungmanik Village, Talaga District, Majalengka Regency. The background of this research arises from the phenomenon of weakening social bonds and moral values in rural communities as a consequence of modernization and the erosion of spiritual values. Within this context, TQN Suryalaya emerges as a Sufi movement that not only emphasizes the ritual aspects of dzikr (remembrance of God) but also performs a social function in strengthening community cohesion and the spirit of mutual cooperation (gotong royong) among villagers. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a sociology of religion perspective. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation of the order’s activities. The key informants consisted of TQN teachers, local administrators, community leaders, and ordinary residents. The findings indicate that the practices of daily dzikr, Monday night khotaman, and monthly manaqiban play a vital role in reinforcing social relationships, nurturing empathy, and cultivating the spirit of mutual assistance within the community. Sufi values such as ikhlas (sincerity), tawadhu’ (humility), ta‘awun (mutual help), and ukhuwah (brotherhood) serve as the moral foundation that sustains social solidarity and communal harmony in the village.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the stages of transformation in inheritance distribution practices among the Sasak Muslim community in Rensing Bat Village, East Lombok, and to explain the process of change through William Fielding Ogburn’s theory of social change. Drawing on field research with a qualitative approach supported by in depth interviews, the findings indicate a gradual shift from a patriarchal customary system towards a distribution pattern that aligns more closely with the principles of afraid. This transformation unfolds in four stages, beginning with the dominance of men as the primary heirs, the emergence of a justice based awareness that opens space for women, a transition towards a bilateral system, and the use of hibachi as a culturally accepted mechanism of value adjustment that simultaneously preserves family harmony. Osborn’s analysis shows that this change follows the stages of invention, accumulation, diffusion and adjustment, reflecting a bottom up process of social transformation arising from collective moral consciousness rather than from external structural pressure. The findings affirm that legal reform does not always need to be institutional or imposed from above, but may develop through the gradual internalization of Islamic values within local culture. This study offers a novel contribution by providing an empirical account of how such internalization occurs organically within the customary system, demonstrating that changes in inheritance practices may evolve through value negotiation at the community level.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the practice of paying a dowry (belis) in traditional marriages in the Kedang Bareng community of Lembata Regency and to examine its suitability from an Islamic legal perspective. The belis tradition is a form of respect for the bride's family, but its practice is often viewed as problematic if it places a heavy economic burden on the groom. This study used a qualitative approach with field research methods. Data were collected through interviews with traditional leaders, religious leaders, couples who had previously had a traditional marriage, and village officials as key informants. Data analysis was conducted using an interactive model through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that the belis in Kedang Bareng has symbolic meaning as a symbol of respect, kinship ties, and confirmation of social status. However, in practice, a high amount of belis can cause socio-economic obstacles, especially for families with limited income. From an Islamic legal perspective, the belis tradition is permitted as long as it does not conflict with the principles of justice, willingness (taradhi), and does not burden either party, as is the principle of marriage in Islam. If belis is viewed as a customary dowry that complements the dowry without eliminating its sharia obligations, then it is permissible. The implication of this research is the need for ongoing dialogue between traditional and religious leaders to adapt the practice of belis to align it more closely with the principles of maqasid al-syari'ah (the principle of Islamic law), particularly in maintaining family welfare and avoiding harm. The results of this study can also serve as a reference in formulating village policies that accommodate both customary and Islamic values in marriages in the Kedang Bareng community.

Abstract

This study examines the implications of online gambling practices on family resilience through the ethical-humanistic framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. As a contemporary social phenomenon in the digital era, online gambling not only affects families’ economic stability but also undermines their moral integrity, psychological well-being, and spiritual harmony. Using a qualitative, literature-based approach, this study analyzes classical and contemporary Islamic scholarly works along with secondary data on the social consequences of online gambling, using descriptive and interpretive analysis. The findings indicate that online gambling poses serious challenges to the core objectives of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, specifically the preservation of religion (ḥifẓ al-dīn), reason (ḥifẓ al-‘aql), wealth (ḥifẓ al-māl), and progeny (ḥifẓ al-nasl). Rather than serving as a basis for formal legal decisions, the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah in this study serves as an ethical lens for interpreting the broader social impacts of online gambling, including the erosion of family roles, moral degradation, and increased economic vulnerability within households. This study underscores the importance of strengthening maqāṣid-based values as a foundation for preventive, educational, and social interventions aimed at maintaining family resilience. This study contributes to the development of a more responsive and interdisciplinary Islamic ethical discourse in addressing the social challenges of the digital age.

Abstract

The relationship between Islamic and Western civilization has been subjected to ongoing heated debate among Muslim and non-Muslim scholars alike. This paper aims to examine the views of progressive Muslim thinkers in debunking the binary construction of Islamic and Western civilizations, as well as their underlying epistemologies, that often underpin the contemporary debate on this issue. Combining theoretical investigation and thematic content analysis of the works of leading progressive Muslim thinkers, it seeks to examine how the idea of civilizational and epistemological inclusivism provides a stronger foundation for revitalizing the cosmopolitan spirit within Islamic thought and education today. The paper argues that in the increasingly interconnected and globalized world today, civilizational and epistemological inclusivism as advocated by progressive Muslim thinkers is critical in enhancing the participation and contribution of Muslims in reshaping the world order that is more just, dialogical, and capable of effectively tackling global humanitarian and ecological challenges.
