Two decades or more, in the global scheme, Islamic studies have been enforced to take broader paradigms from dogmatic-theology to popular-religious. Islamic studies is not merely discussing on sacred corpus only, but everyday life of Islam also. In academic space, this field has increasingly been an intersection -if not a contestation- across disciplines, such as political science, anthropology, sociology, history, economics, media, and cultural studies.

Abstract

The role of mosques in enhancing community religiosity faces challenges due to the dominance of ritual activities and the growing influence of social media in shaping religious preferences. Previous studies have largely evaluated programmes based on pre-defined objectives and have therefore not fully revealed the actual impacts, including unintended consequences, on religiosity. This study aims to analyse the religiosity of the community in Kediri City, the actual contribution of mosque programmes, and strategies for strengthening them. The research employs a mixed-methods approach with a convergent design based on Goal-Free Evaluation (GFE), which was selected to identify actual outcomes without being constrained by pre-defined programme objectives. Quantitative data were obtained from 399 respondents using Mujani’s dimensions of religiosity, whilst qualitative data were obtained through interviews, observation and documentation. The results show that 71.43 per cent of the community exhibit high religiosity, with mosques contributing 40.60 per cent to faith, 62.41 per cent to worship, 61.65 per cent to social capital, and 60.40 per cent to Islamism. Qualitatively, the strengthening of the mosque’s role is achieved through programme diversification, the development of institutional units, and adaptation to community needs. This study contributes to the development of outcome-based evaluation in mosque management and the study of religiosity.

Abstract

Rujak Simpang Jodoh is a traditional culinary dish that is widely known in Medan, especially in the Pasar VII Tembung area, Bandar Klipah Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency. Although previous studies have discussed the existence and economic aspects of traditional culinary vendors, studies that integrate trading strategies, Islamic business ethics, and business blessings are still limited. This study aims to examine the trading strategies and ethics of rujak Simpang Jodoh vendors from an Islamic perspective, as well as how these trading practices contribute to business blessings. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with 4 informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model through data condensation, data presentation, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The results show that rujak Simpang Jodoh vendors implement trading strategies that include selecting a strategic location, consistent taste, affordable prices, and warm social interactions with consumers. Furthermore, traders practice Islamic trade ethics, such as honesty (shiddiq), responsibility (amanah), keeping promises, being generous, and maintaining a balance between economic activities and religious obligations. These findings indicate that integrated trade strategies and the application of Islamic business ethics support consumer trust, business sustainability, and blessings. Theoretically, this research enriches the study of Islamic business ethics in the context of traditional culinary arts, while practically, it provides input for MSMEs and the government in empowering sharia-based businesses. Further research could test these findings quantitatively or comparatively in other culinary centers.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the limited number of studies on the economic empowerment of the community in historic mosques that integrate aspects of worship, religious tourism, and economic empowerment of the community. This study aims to examine the role of the Al-Mashun Mosque in Medan as a historical heritage and a religious tourism object that has the potential to encourage economic empowerment of the community in the surrounding area. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. Data collection was carried out through several techniques, namely observation, interviews with various informants including mosque administrators, local residents, and visitors, and supported by relevant documentation, then tested for validity through source triangulation. All data obtained were then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana which includes data condensation, data presentation, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the Al-Mashun Mosque plays a role as an initial driver of community economic activity through increased visits to religious tourism that opens business opportunities such as culinary, small trade, and supporting services. However, economic empowerment is still dominated by the utilization of tourism opportunities (indirect economic empowerment) and has not been fully supported by a structured business development program. This research contributes to the development of a mosque-based economic empowerment model that integrates the roles of the BKM (Bandung Community Empowerment Agency) as a manager, religious tourism as a source of economic potential, and the community as business actors. Strengthening MSME development, business mentoring, area planning, and collaboration among stakeholders are needed to enable the Al-Mashun Mosque to develop as a center for sustainable religious tourism-based economic empowerment.
