Two decades or more, in the global scheme, Islamic studies have been enforced to take broader paradigms from dogmatic-theology to popular-religious. Islamic studies is not merely discussing on sacred corpus only, but everyday life of Islam also. In academic space, this field has increasingly been an intersection -if not a contestation- across disciplines, such as political science, anthropology, sociology, history, economics, media, and cultural studies.

Abstract

Islamic education today often experiences an imbalance between spiritual-moral formation and rational-intellectual development. This indicates a theoretical gap in developing an integrated educational framework in Islamic thought. Although Al-Ghazali and Ibn Rushd represent two main paradigms in this debate, their educational ideas are rarely studied comparatively to address this issue. This study aims to comparatively analyze the educational thoughts of Al-Ghazali and Ibn Rushd and to explore their relevance to contemporary Islamic education. This research uses qualitative library research by examining primary and secondary literature related to these two scholars. This study finds that Al-Ghazali emphasizes education as spiritual purification and moral perfection based on divine guidance, while Ibn Rushd emphasizes intellectual development through reasoning and empirical inquiry. Rather than being contradictory, their perspectives complement each other. Integrating ethical-spiritual and rational-intellectual approaches offers a holistic framework for contemporary Islamic education.

Abstract

Religious polarization and the rise of exclusivist religious attitudes among young people present significant challenges for Islamic higher education institutions in promoting religious moderation. In the Indonesian context, the values of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah (Aswaja) including tawassuth (moderation), tawazun (balance), tasamuh (tolerance), and i‘tidal (justice) are widely recognized as a theological foundation for fostering moderate Islamic perspectives. However, empirical studies examining how the internalization of these values influences students’ religious moderation attitudes remain limited, particularly within Islamic higher education institutions. This study aims to analyze the effect of the internalization of Aswaja values on the religious moderation attitudes of students at the Islamic University of Jember. This research employs a quantitative approach with an explanatory design. A total of 155 students were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire measuring the internalization of Aswaja values and indicators of religious moderation attitudes, including tolerance, inclusivity, rejection of violence, and balanced religious practice. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. The findings indicate that both the level of internalization of Aswaja values and students’ religious moderation attitudes are categorized as high. Regression analysis reveals that the internalization of Aswaja values has a positive and significant effect on students’ religious moderation attitudes (β = 0.63, p < 0.05), with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.40. These results demonstrate that the internalization of Aswaja values contributes substantially to shaping moderate, tolerant, and inclusive religious attitudes among students. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the strategic role of Aswaja-based educational approaches in strengthening religious moderation within Islamic higher education.

Abstract

Recent Indonesian horror movies have shown a tendency to feature Islamic elements, ranging from Islamic-themed diction in titles to the appearance of Qur’anic verses in their narratives, which serve as both a representation and a reception of the sacred text. This study aims to analyze how Qur’anic verses can be functionally received and how they represent certain concepts through Roland Barthes’ semiotic reading, Stuart Hall’s Representation, and Ahmad Rafiq’s Reception frameworks. The results of the study show that, first, the representation of people who seek protection from God in Surah Al-Nās is depicted as always receiving His help when facing Satan’s disturbance. Second, the representation of moral opposition between two characters refers to the concepts of al-fujjār and al-abrār in surah Al-Mut}affifīn. Third, the functional reception of the verses of the Qur’an in the form of performative practices through the ritual of ruqyah, namely Surah Āli ‘Imrān verses 26-27, Al-Naml verse 30, Al-Jinn verses 1-6, Al-Ikhlās} verses 1-4, Al-Falaq verses 1-5, and Al-Nās verses 1-6. These findings indicate that films can be a popular medium that enlivens and constructs religious moral messages based on verses from the Qur’an through cinematic narratives, thus opening up further research on the interaction between sacred texts, media, and religious practices in society.
