Abstract

This article aims to analyze the work of the 2016 Indonesian Press Photo Award Photo of the Year entitled "Tinjau Titik Api," using the "Three Visual Layers" theory. Photo of the Year 2016 was chosen because it has the advantage of good visual value and high news value, especially for people in the news. The three visual layers analysis includes optical, cultural, and photographic meaning. The optical aspect is for the non-blind eyes, the cultural aspect includes known visual appearances and unknown visual appearances, and the photographic aspect has a functional appearance, personal appearance, and subjective appearance. The research method is qualitative analysis because its implementation is based on visual analysis to find meaning from photos depicting three figures who are symbols of the strength of the Indonesian state, namely, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, TNI Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo, and Chief of the Indonesian National Police General Badarudin Haiti, who is inspecting the location of forest and land fires, in Geronggong Village, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. Data analysis involves: Scrutinizing relevant and irrelevant information, reducing data, compiling codes against findings data, and verifying codes as a reference for discussion and conclusion. The research results show that the 2016 Photo of the Year contains meaning that shows the Indonesian government's commitment to dealing with forest and land fires in Sumatra. The photo has advantages in terms of visual value which is reflected in the composition, depth of focus, and expression of the president, and in terms of news value, it is superior in terms of character value, as well as another advantage in the closeness of the photographer to the object of the event.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the unconscious motivations and character development portrayed in the film "Marlina, the Murderer in Four Acts" through a psychoanalytic point of view. The objectives include analyzing the visual attributes and emotional states of the character Marlina, categorizing them into complex emotions, and examining the relation between supremacy and subordination along the film storyline. By conducting a detailed visual psychoanalytic approach, integrating psychological theories and visual analysis techniques. Data collection was conducted by observing and interpreting visual attributes such as shot types, camera angles, character actions, and environmental situations in all scenes Marlina portrayed. The findings reveal how Marlina's unconscious emotional states are intricately reciprocal interactions with the male characters. Also about how supremacy and subordination are signified by her resistance against patriarchal oppression in more complex emotional states. The research highlights the method to do psychoanalytic analysis in understanding character emotion and narrative construction in cinematic works, while also focusing on approaches to explore the complexities of human emotion and behavior in film work.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a digital game based on the Tri Hita Karana concept to introduce and instill Balinese cultural values in children. Tri Hita Karana, which includes the harmonious relationship between humans and God (Parahyangan), humans and fellow humans (Pawongan), and humans and nature (Palemahan), is integrated into digital games to teach ethical and moral values. This research uses a qualitative approach with Husserl's phenomenological method, which is designed to explore in-depth information about the feasibility of the Tri Hita Karana concept as a basis for digital game development. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, observation and documentation determined by the purposive sampling method. The research results show that the Tri Hita Karana concept is very relevant and effective as a basis for developing educational digital games. The values contained in Tri Hita Karana can be implemented into game features that encourage players to work together, protect the environment, and develop morality. The game "See Sungai," developed in this research, reflects the three dimensions of Tri Hita Karana, namely Parahyangan, Pawongan, and Palemahan, through various educational and interactive gameplay and narrative elements. It is hoped that the implementation of Tri Hita Karana values in this game can strengthen children's character and increase their awareness of Balinese culture. This research concludes that the development of digital games based on the Tri Hita Karana concept is an innovative solution that can help introduce and preserve Balinese cultural values to the younger generation. These games are not only entertaining but also provide significant educational benefits, making them an effective tool in education and cultural preservation.

Abstract

Female Sekaa Gong is a collective of women in Ubud Village who unite to perform Balinese music, transforming individual ideas into a collective vision. This group fosters social relationships and a sense of togetherness among its members. This article explores the intricacies of the Female Sekaa Gong, highlighting its role in preserving traditional Balinese music (Karawitan) and providing feminine aesthetic nuances. The research, conducted through a qualitative interpretive method within a cultural studies paradigm, examines the positionality of the Female Sekaa Gong in social and touristic contexts. Findings indicate a rise in the number of Female Sekaa Gong in Ubud Village, motivated by five key factors: religious emotion, a sense of humiliation, status improvement, actualization of beauty, and the desire to create tourist performances. The Female Sekaa Gong plays several roles in ritual and social activities, including: (1) serving as a ritual complement; (2) building social solidarity; (3) expanding traditional roles; and (4) preserving cultural values. Its presence marks a shift in the social paradigm regarding gender norms in gamelan performance, reflecting a dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity and adapting to contemporary circumstances.

Abstract

This article proposes a model of interpretation of the Langke Bulawa statue based on a theoretical approach based on the cultural sociology theory of naturalism from the perspective of the place and location where the statue is located, namely in the Bada Valley. Cultural sociology can fill the cultural gap in the sociology of art and can provide a method for identifying the linguistic context that surrounds social institutions. The aim is to discuss classical readings of the object by constructing alternatives that do not attempt to decipher symbolic content or show naturalistic representations in the form of sculptural objects. Instead, in Langke Bulawa Statue, the author proposes a theoretical approach that goes beyond the descriptive approach that ultimately provides only a vague interpretation of the Langke Bulawa statue as stelae by considering the statue as an artistic expression of a people with aesthetic norms, conditioned by traditions, resulting in a kind of object form that must try to be found based on the representation of cultural views in Bada Valley, where the physical boundaries between humans and non-humans disappear, to show figures that have the same essence, but merge in one object form, namely the Langke Bulawa statue as a representation of a figure with the only female form where the implications of a sociocultural perspective in this study will contribute to interpreting the Langke Bulawa statue as a potential contribution of cultural sociology research related to megalithic relics in Central Sulawesi Province.

Abstract

This study addresses the lack of introduction to the Javanese Krama Inggil language among children aged 4-6 years in the environment of RA Hidayatut Thullab located in Trenggalek district, East Java. This decline occurred due to several things, such as the lack of introduction to the Javanese Krama Inggil language from an early age, globalization, and environmental factors that could lead to the extinction of the language. This research was carried out as an implementation of efforts to preserve culture through educational games. This research aims to increase children's interest in the Javanese Krama Inggil language through educational game. The basis for this research uses data regarding the stages of language development and play stages of children aged 4-6 years. Apart from that, anthropometric data is also used as a basis for designing educational game tools that suit the size of the child's hand so that the child can play comfortably. Interview and observation methods were carried out with teachers at RA Hidayatut Thullab. During the study, interviews were conducted to identify the learning media requirements in schools and how language learning is carried out. Additionally, non-participant observation was carried out for four days to identify problems, such as the children's ability to communicate using Javanese Krama Inggil. The research results show that RA Hidayatut Thullab students only use basic Javanese Krama Inggil or not at all in their daily activities. The findings of this research highlight the decreasing number of speakers of Javanese Krama Inggil due to a lack of early introduction to the language. Therefore, schools need to involve local content as an effort to introduce regional languages to children from an early age. To make the learning process more interesting and enjoyable, media is needed that can help children recognize and learn regional languages.

Abstract

Ruwatan is a self-cleansing method in Javanese society for those considered sukerta (spiritually unclean person). To prevent a misfortune in life, the sukerta people must be ritually cleaned. The Murwakala performance is led by a dhalang ruwat in this ruwatan ceremonial procession, therefore a dhalang plays an important role. However, several qualifications must be met before being ordained as a dhalang ruwat and trusted to lead the ruwatan sukerta procession. The objective of the study is to explore the concept of old-aged (sepuh) in becoming a dhalang ruwat. The descriptive qualitative model was used to develop this study, the results of which were descriptions of field notes in the form of interviews with dhalang ruwat, observations, and documentation. The results showed that in order to become a dhalang ruwat, one must be descended from a dhalang ruwat, be a role model, and have married their offspring. The notion of sepuh (old-aged) in becoming a dhalang ruwat includes being psychologically mature in terms of age, as well as being spiritually capable in terms of social position.

Abstract

Utilizing mascots as an extension of the brand to reach the target audience is one strategy in visual branding that has proven its effectiveness. Mascots with solid characters can build consumer trust and are even more impressive than other visual identities. However, currently, very few mascot design methods or steps lead to the creation of a mascot that is both convincing and an agent of the institution it represents. This research highlights the convincing agent design process as the primary basis for designing mascot designs. This research uses the theory of believable agents, which includes seven dimensions: personality, emotions, self-motivation, change, social interaction, consistency of expression, and the illusion of life. These seven theories will be supported by the results of the questionnaires. The questionnaire results found that credible and trustworthy agents should have a friendly personality, which can be seen from their facial expressions, body movements, and the way they present themselves. The research results confirm that the seven dimensions of a trustworthy agent can be applied to mascot design that prioritizes the formation of a unique and distinctive personality. Mascots will be perceived as genuine individuals with specific characteristics that appear in the way they act (behavior), the way they think (think), and the way they feel (emotions). The results of this research provide a bridge for designers to consider ideas up to the mascot design stage.
