Abstract

Listening is one of the important activities in learning that can obtain information. Based on the phenomenon that students have difficulty in learning English, especially in listening skills because many students have difficulty in listening comprehension clearly. Moreover, they feel bored because of the teaching and learning process without using interactive media. The purpose of this research found out the implementation of the listening comprehension learning process in intensive English class of the Language Center by using the Spotify media as an interactive learning media and students' responses in using of the Spotify media.   The researchers used three instruments in this research that were observation, questionnaire, and interview. Qualitative method was used by researchers to analyze descriptive data. The results showed that the students were interested when the lecturer used the Spotify media as part of the teaching and learning process. Furthermore, the students responded positively to the use of the Spotify media. The results of the analysis showed that the using of Spotify media by the lecturer in the learning process of listening to understanding is very pleasant and students are easier to understand English in listening skill. Since they can use the Spotify anywhere and anytime that was as the new experience in learning English for their daily activities

Abstract

This research aims to find syntactic errors and factors of errors made in the essay narrative in semester V. The method used in this study is qualitative, and the approach used in this research is descriptive research. Data was obtained through documentation and analyzed using Surface Strategy Taxonomy. This research took data based on the category of grades B and C. The results showed that there were four types of errors made by students in descriptive writing. The total errors were 41 errors which were divided into 42% error misinformation, error addition of 35%, error addition 19%%, and misconception misordering as much as 4%. Based on data analysis, a standard error made by students is misformation. In the results of the error factor, the researcher found the most errors in the intralingual error factor.Students are still influenced by their habits in making sentences using their mother tongue (Indonesian). Students make errors in writing, especially in the use of tenses. Most of the students wrote incomplete and ungrammatical sentences. The teacher should find the best method based on the condition of the students to teach English, especially in teaching tenses. Since tenses and grammar are essential for language learning, they should be taught cohesively.

Abstract

This study analyzes Alice Munro’s feminism thoughts in her selected short stories; Alice Munro, whose family has undergone oppression especially her mother and her herself since she was in her childhood, expresses the right of ‘speaking’ through the female characters about equal rights of women she saw as well as she experienced since her childhood, the women who are oppressed by man as well as the cultural gaps. Using Feminism as the method and sociology of literature as the theory, I find that Alice Munro’s feminism’s thoughts are reflected through the female characters who are against men and culture domination in the selected short stories.

Abstract

As the learning activities were switched to online because of the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in the way of learning also affects the facilities used both in the learning and the test activities. This situation requires language test developers to think more creatively to make the test online and to provide safe environment for the test without compromising the validity of the test. This paper aims to describe the steps of choosing the appropriate application used for the online language test, trials of the test, and the user manual made for the test. So, it requires new guidelines and new way of proctoring the online language tests. There are 4 steps that accommodate the needs, 1) Technology Selections, 2) User Manual Making, 3) Trials, and 4) Question Making. The process of designing a language assessment following the steps sends a platform suitable for the needs. Because of the restrictions from the COVID-19 , the platform can provide a valid and safe environment for the language testing because it was conducted based on web monitoring. Then, the platform can provide webcam monitoring and variations of questions in language assessment, such as audio for listening tests. User Manuals help the test taker in understanding on how to access the platform, and the trials made it more comprehensive. From the questionnaiers, it can be concluded that the platform help to solve the problems and the test can be conducted without problematic issues.

Abstract

This study is about feminism in Jung Chang’ Wild Swans. The feminism is identified by the character of a woman who has been triggered by the social injustice at that time such as corruption, people humiliation, cultural abolishment, discrimination, private life interference and victims all of which are done by the previous and late government. Using close reading method and feminism as the approach, the researcher can identify the words and actions of the main character that belong to feminism. Finally the researcher finds that the main character, the woman, belongs to the feminism in her speeches and actions identified by the way the woman’s donation to economies and societies, elimination of sexual aspiration from the female presence to get a more serious, earnest equivalence with men, and women acquisition of equal rights; the first refers to struggling for the elimination of those who belong to other party, existences as follows: teachers, private life, children, husband, and her own existence. The second refers to woman’s right to choose her husband and the last refers to the wife’s right to have her husband’s care.

Abstract

The outbreak of the coronavirus, especially in Indonesia, has caused the teaching and learning process to change completely. The face-to-face teaching and learning process turns into an online teaching and learning process. Teachers and students are required to be ready for implementation. Teachers must change their instructions online so that teaching and learning can continue. This creates new challenges and workloads, especially for teachers who are just starting the online teaching process. The purpose of this study was to determine whether online learning increases the workload on teachers physically, mentally, and financially. The method used was a quantitative method and the instrument used was a questionnaire that is distributed online. The samples of this research were teachers who teach at private senior vocational schools in West Jakarta. Based on the data obtained, it can be seen that the application of online learning increases the workload on teachers physically, mentally, and financially.  Keywords: Online, Learning, Teachers, Workloads

Abstract

This article aimed to examine performative utterances in the interactions between teacher and students in EFL classroom. It adopted a sociolinguistic and content analysis approach, focusing on the field of performative utterances as the subject of study. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data source was an audio recording capturing the interactions between teacher and students at SMP Islam Cendekia Harapan Jombang. The researcher used J.L. Austin's theory  in the Wardhaugh book (2010:286) for data analysis. Based on the theory there are five types of performative utterance: verdictives, exercitive, commisives, behabitives, and expositives. The findings are the teacher's utterances consisted of 21 utterances, with 33% (7 utterances) categorized as exercitives, 24% (5 utterances) as expositives, 19% (4 utterances) as verdictives, 14% (3 utterances) as commissives, and 10% (2 utterances) as behabitives. On the other hand, the students' utterances amounted to 14 utterances, with 46% (5 utterances) classified as expositives, 27% (3 utterances) as verdictives, 18% (2 utterances) as behabitives, and 9% (1 utterance) as exercitives. There were no utterances of commissive use in students utterances.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the factors that cause anxiety in reading based on the FLRAS by Saito, Garza, and Horwitz (1999) and the students’ ways to overcome anxiety. The subjects of this study were 33 ninth-grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Sungai Raya. This study used a descriptive study and data collected from the provision of questionnaires, namely a close-ended questionnaire and an open-ended questionnaire. The results explained the factors of anxiety in reading and how to overcome the anxiety in reading. The factors included worrying about reading effects, afraid of making errors, unfamiliar culture, unfamiliar topics, and unknown vocabulary. The efforts that the students used to overcome their anxiety in reading were preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer-seeking, and resignation.

Abstract

The discursive construction of G20 in Indonesia in this current digital communication era is no longer dominated by the elite’s discourse. Social media allows the common people to also express their conception of G20 in Indonesia. This article aims to explain how Indonesia is being portrayed as a unified nation that consists of various cultural and social groups. Additionally, the purpose of this article is to provide insights whether social media, particularly Instagram, have a meaningful role in maintaining, countering, or even altering the elite’s conception of Indonesia national identity. The data for this article consists of the visual and textual data collected from Bank Indonesia’s G20 flyer. By implementing multimodal discourse analysis, this study investigates the visual and textual narration of Bank Indonesia’s G20 flyer. Utilizing multimodal discourse analysis in this study became crucial because through investigating the rich multimodal data. The writers using descriptive qualitative research to engage the multimodal discourse analysis in G20 flyer by Bank Indonesia for welcoming and enliven the summit. The writers used multimodal discourse analysis in order to interpret the meaning from elements in the G20 flyer by Bank Indonesia. The data that containing in this analysis are categorized as verbal and non-verbal texts. The verbal text data were words, phrases, and clauses. The non-verbal data were logo, pictures, symbol/emblem, and color. Referring to Social Identity Theory, the study found that the digital flyer is built upon the construction of positive self-representation of the in-group members which revolved around the G20 summit. The discourse is dominated by the social groups related by G20 summit in the public discourse. However, one significant pattern can be identified in this data is that the populist discourse in Indonesia, was initiated by the people that able to change the political leader’s discourse to adjust with the people’s expectation. These findings indicate the importance of utilizing to analyse the holistic and nuance conception of identity representation. In addition, this study also highlights the important role of social media as the people’s communication platform to counter balance the elite’s political discourse.Keyword: Digital Flyer; G20 Indonesia Flyer; Multimodal Discourse Analysis

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a crucial skill that students must master to understand texts effectively. Choosing the proper techniques for teaching reading and making lessons attractive and effective are essential factors determining the success of the learning process in education. This study aims to know whether the student reading narrative text with the gist strategy achieves better than students reading the narrative text without using the gist strategy. A total of 60 students consisting of two classes (a control class and an experimental class) at SMK PGRI 1 Jombang participated in this study. The design of quasi-experimental was used in this study. This research used test instruments (pre-test and post-test) with multiple-choice questions using Google Forms. This study revealed a significant difference (p-value 0,011) in student learning outcomes scores in the experimental and control classes. Pertaining to this, schools can improvise the curriculum by applying GIST in certain learning subjects to improve student understanding.
