The purpose of the study was to elaborate the value of liberal feminism conducted by the four women: Hallie, Mary, Emily, and Hannah. The main factor why they did such liberal feminism was that they wanted to do things like what man could do even though they had criticism from the same gender as theirs. Using liberal feminism theory, the researcher found that all the mentioned women namely Hallie, Mary, Emily, and Hannah are in struggle to be in equality as man in any kind of life contribution; Hallie without dependence to her husband and her fight for the famine, Mary with the life freedom and education, Emily with the chance to be educated at school for a study like a man, and Hannah with being unmarried woman in the area of married women.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of cataphoric references on coherence and creativity in non-native English speakers attending university-level creative writing courses. This research aims to address the question of whether students’ creativity is reflected through the use of cataphora in their writing. Using qualitative descriptive analysis, the author focuses on creative writing works from a Creative Writing Course at Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, employing purposive sampling from two students’ compilation books for diverse representation. Data collection involved systematically reading the compilation books, and noting instances of cataphoric and anaphoric references. The collected data were organized into tables, categorizing passages based on Longacre's text types. Analysis centers on cataphoric and anaphoric references, guided by Halliday and Matthiessen's theoretical framework (2014). This theoretical lens guided the exploration of the roles of cataphora in different text types and the subsequent understanding of its impact on students' creativity. The findings reveal that cataphora can function as both cohesive and creative tools, enhancing the creative dimension of a text by instilling suspense or a sense of anticipation. Interestingly, texts that abstain from using cataphora and solely utilize anaphora may enhance creativity through diction diversification. However, it is acknowledged that determining whether students’ creativity is reflected through the use of cataphora in their writing presents challenges. The study's limitations stem from the analysis of purposive samples, thus restricting the generalizability of the results. Despite limitations, this study significantly contributes to understanding the creative dimensions of cataphoric references in non-native English-speaking students' writing.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of slang words and the translation strategies used to translate the slang words in Venom: Let There Be Carnage movie. Data collected by referring to the official movie transcripts in English and their translations in Indonesian, especially those that have been classified as slang words. To classify the slang, the researcher used the theory of types of slang by Allan and Burridge (2006), while the analysis process used the theory of translation strategies proposed by Baker (1992). The study found four out of five types of slang words, and the type “fresh and creative” mostly appeared with 17 data. It is followed by flippant which occurred 15 times, imitative 9 times, and clipping 4 times. Furthermore, the study also found seven out of eight translation strategies to translate the slang, and the most frequently used strategy is translation by a more general word which constitutes 46.6% of the total data. Meanwhile, the translation by illustration is not used. And the least strategy used to translate the slang words is translation using loan word or loan word with explanation with a total of 2.2%. Based on the findings, fresh and creative slang appears most frequently due to the casual atmosphere of the scenes, while acronyms are absent as they are more suitable for written text. The general word strategy is common due to the abundance of general terms, whereas the illustration strategy is rarely used due to spatial constraints in presenting additional visuals in scenes. Hopefully, this study can provide practical insights for translating similar movies.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify the subtitling strategies used in the Moon Knight TV series episode 6 and to find out the most commonly used subtitling strategy in the Moon Knight TV series episode 6. This researcher used the qualitative-descriptive method. Based on the data findings, the researcher found 10 out of 10 strategies, namely transfer, imitation, transcription, expansion, paraphrase, dislocation, condensation, deletion, decimation, and resignation. There are 139 data of transfer strategy, 72 data of imitation strategy, condensation strategy with the total 41 data, dislocation strategy with the total 33 data, paraphrase strategy with the total 29 data, expansion strategy with the total 12 data, transcription strategy with the total 9 data, decimation strategy with the total 5 data, deletion strategy with the total 3 data, and the last resignation strategy with the total of 1 data. The most used strategy in the Moon Knight TV series episode 6 found by the researcher is the transfer strategy, with a total of 139. The least used strategy is the resignation strategy, with a total of the data 1. In short, utterance from the source language is can be translated accurately. In another occasion, translator used resignation strategy because translator doesn’t have any solution to the translation process which causes a loss of meaning, beside that in audio-visual there are no part can provide an explanation of the meaning of the source language. And translating the subtitle or text just makes an ambiguous or incorrect translation in the TV series.

Abstract

This study explores Indonesian ditransitive verbs from a cognitive semantics perspective, focusing on how language reflects conceptual structures and cognitive processes in social interactions, communication, and knowledge transfer. Indonesian ditransitive constructions embody conceptual metaphors and image schemas derived from sensory-motor experiences, such as the Source-Path-Goal schema, which illustrates the transfer of entities or information from a source to a goal through a path. These constructions assign semantic roles to participants, reflecting their roles in the conceptual event represented by the verb and grounded in primitive cognitive concepts called proto-roles. Embodied cognition emphasizes the role of bodily experiences in shaping linguistic expressions, evident in how ditransitive constructions embody social interactions like giving, telling, or teaching. By analyzing cognitive models of communication and learning, Indonesian ditransitive verbs illuminate the dynamics of expertise, social hierarchies, and power dynamics. Prototype theory suggests that ditransitive verbs form categories around prototypical instances, representing fundamental social actions involving the transfer of entities or information. Overall, this study showcases how cognitive semantics provides a comprehensive framework for understanding Indonesian ditransitive verbs and their role in shaping cognitive processes and social interactions.
