Abstract

The researcher conducts a research with the topic An Analysis of English Phrasal Verb in The Novel “Abandon” and its translation. Through this research, the researcher finds out English Phrasal Verb in novel that has been translated into Indonesian.  In this research, the writer focused on what kind of English phrasal verbs that occur in the Abandon novel and the meanings its translation. The purposes of this research are to find out the difficulties encountered by the researcher in the translation of English phrasal verb and to solve the difficulties faced by the researcher in translating English phrasal verb in the Abandon Novel by Meg Cabot. This research employs descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research are some of the phrasal verbs Taken from Cabot’s Abandon, and its translation by Lucia Aryani. From the novel, the researcher only took thirty sentences which contain English phrasal verb randomly from first 65 pages of the novel. The result of the study shown that from 30 data, 21 data belong to level shift that consists of phrasal verb into verb and The researcher find 9 data belong to equivalence translation that consists of formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence. Keywords: Phrasal verb, Translation, Equivalence, Shift

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a complex process that involves the combination of many competencies and abilities. In the context of EFL classrooms, adolescent who struggling with reading comprehension are at risk for developing deeply ingrained negative attitudes towards reading and towards themselves as readers. As a result these students are faced with challenges not only in English classroom but in other content areas where the teachers require the students to read English literatures for content support. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of reciprocal teaching on reading comprehension of adolescent struggling readers.  Findings on all measures provide support for the claim that reciprocal teaching is superior to traditional remedial method in fostering reading comprehension of adolescent struggling readers. Keywords: Reciprocal Teaching, EFL Classroom, Struggling Reader

Abstract

Cerita rakyat merupakan salah satu warisan budaya yang perlu dijaga kelestariannya.  Cerita rakyat atau foklor adalah cerita dari suatu daerah yang dituturkan secara lisan dan turun temurun dari satu generasi ke generasi selanjutnya. Dalam setiap cerita rakyat terkandung nilai adat dan budaya yang merepresentasikan masyarakat suatu daerah. Penelitian ini menggunakan cerita rakyat Riau Mutiara dari Indragiri sebagai objek penelitian dengan kalimat, paragraf, dan kata-kata sebagai data primernya. Fokus utama penelitian ini membahas struktur dan fungsi narasi dari cerita rakyat Riau Mutiara dari Indragiri. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah desktiptif kualitatif, dengan alat analisis menggunakan teori struktur narasi dari Tzvetan Todorov dan teori fungsi narasi Vladimir Propp. Hasil dari analisis menunjukan ada empat tahapan dalam struktur narasi, dan sembilan fungsi pelaku yang terdapat dalam cerita rakyat Mutiara dari Indragiri.

Abstract

This is an annotated translation research. The problems of the research are: (1) What are the difficulties/problems encountered by the researcher when translating the source text? (2) How does the researcher cope/handle with the problems in order to get the solutions? The purposes of this research are: (1) To find out the difficulties/problems encountered by the researcher when translating the source text. (2) To describe the way the researcher copes with the problems in order to get the solutions and to solve the problems encountered by the researcher when translating the source text. The method used in this study is introspective and retrospective methods. Relevant translation strategies and theories are used in solving the problems that are encountered during the translation. Results obtained from this research show that there are 1 phrasal verb, 1 auxiliary, 1 clause, 1 phrase, 2 prepositions, 14 words, 3 pronouns, and 2 idiomatic expressions from 25 data analyzed that pose difficulty to be translated by the researcher/translator. Based on the 25 data which have been analyzed, it was found that there are 11 translation strategies used by the researcher to solve the problems/difficulties in translating the source text into the target text, namely 1 calque, 1 literal translation, 1 interpersonal change, 1 loan, 2 phrase structure changes, 2 paraphrases, 2 distribution changes, 3 explicitness changes, 4 abstraction changes, 2 cohesion changes, and 6 naturalizations.Keywords: annotated translations, problems, solutions.

Abstract

This undergraduate thesis analyzed the Balinese women in Earth Dance by Oka Rusmini. The writer chose this novel because this novel describes the gender inequalities suffered by Balinese women and kinds of Balinese women resistance against gender inequalities by feminist approach, which in this undergraduate thesis the elaboration of the approach employed radical feminist that is radical feminist. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method. Collecting data in this research is done by reading some books, reading some journals, and searching information on the internet. The aims of the research are to describe the kinds of gender inequality against Balinese women and to describe the kinds of Balinese women resistance against gender inequalities in the novel Earth Dance by Oka Rusmini. The results of the research are; first, violence, unfaithful, stereotype, and double burden are the kinds of gender inequality experienced by the Balinese women; and second, celibacy, lesbian, and resist the custom are the kinds of Balinese women resistance against gender inequalities in Earth Dance by Oka Rusmini.Keywords: Feminism, Radical Feminist, inequality, resistance, Balinese women, Earth Dance.

Abstract

Sex is something that is taboo to discuss. It will make the listener and speaker who are the participants of a conversation will feel embarrassed. Euphemisms are used to replace those words considered taboo. As a part of language, euphemisms has its own linguistics forms. Using Warren’s model of linguistic forms of euphemisms, this study tries to find out the forms of sexual euphemistic expression that exist in novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D.H Lawrence. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The result of the study shows that  From 50 euphemistic expressions found in the novel, there 14 data included into implication, 11 data into metaphors, 7 data into particularization, 5 into metonymy, 5 into derivation, 3 into compounding,  4 into French, and 1 into Latin. Keywords: English, Euphemism, Linguistic form, Sex, Warren

Abstract

In sociolinguistics, there is a phenomenon in which a community stops using their parent’s heritage language by making the use of the language in which they are located or stay as a mean of communication, it is called as a language shift. In this research, it aims to find out the factors that affected the students whose parents originated from Sunda not interested to learn their parent’s heritage language. Moreover, it aims to find out the most dominant factor that affected the students not interested to learn their parent’s heritage language. This research used the qualitative method and the data source comes from the students of English literature in Universitas Gunadarma. The result of this research shows the factors that affected the students not interested to learn their parent’s heritage language such as social, economic, and political factor, demographic factor, attitudes and values factors, education factor, migration factor, and bilingual or multilingual factors. Furthermore, education factor is assumed as the most dominant or influential factor to the students not interested to learn their parent’s heritage language, because all of the students choose agree to the education factor.

Abstract

Shift means the small linguistic changes that occur in translating source text into target text. In this research, the writer analyzed shifts in the translation of English participial adjectives into Indonesian in novel “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”. The data, shifts of participial adjectives, were taken from a fiction novel “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” written by Stephenie Meyer and its Indonesian translation “New Moon: Dua Cinta” translated by Monica Dwi Chresnayani. The objectives of this research are: (1) to describe the kinds of English participial adjectives in novel “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”; (2) to elaborate the kinds of shifts in the translation of English participial adjectives in the novel; also, (3) to find out the most dominant shift found in the translation of English participial adjectives in the novel. Through this research which had been completed by qualitative method, the writer drew conclusions as: (1) There are two kinds of participial adjectives found in novel “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”, they are present participial adjectives and past participial adjectives. (2) There are three kinds of shifts which are found in the novel, namely structure shifts, class shifts, and unit shifts. From 100 (100%) data of present participial adjectives, there are 9 (9%) structure shifts, 57 (57%) class shifts, and 34 (34%) unit shifts. Meanwhile, there are 8 (18.18%) structure shifts, 10 (22.72%) class shifts, and 26 (59.09%) unit shifts from 44 (100%) data of past participial adjectives. (3) The most dominant shift found in the translation of English present participial adjectives in the novel is class shift that consists of 57 shifts or 57% of the data. Moreover, the most dominant shift found in the translation of English past participial adjectives in the novel is unit shift that consists of 26 shifts or 59.09% of the data.Keywords: shifts, translation, present participial adjectives, past participial adjectives

Abstract

This research is an annotated translation with the novel Three Little Words by Jessica Thompson as its source of the data. The purposes of this research are to acquire objective information of the difficulties emerged during the process of translation and to present the solutions to the difficulties. The methods used by the researcher are retrospective and introspective methods. The result of the research showed that the 5 chosen data to be analyzed used the following translation strategies: transposition, coherence change, loan, paraphrase, and calque.Keywords: Translation, annotated translation.

Abstract

Film is one of literary work that interesting to discuss. The images on screen told a story and language in film established firmly the connection to literature. In this research, the writer tries to analyze the major character in film by using psychological factors. As the material of the discussion, the aim of the study is to find out psychological factors that influences Pat Solitano in Silver Lining Playbook. The writer used descriptive qualitative as research method. Besides that, the writer also used some books, dictionaries and internet to collect the data about psychological factors.. The result of the study showed that Pat Solitano has influenced by his attitudes, appetites, wants, emotions, feeling and attitudes and also social motives that makes Pat Solitano turns into unstable and a motivated person toward his life. Keywords: Psychology, Character, Attitude And Human Motivation
