Abstract

Translation strategy is one of the aspects that a translator should master in order to produce an acceptable and a natural translation. This research discusses the translation strategies in translating terms in English version of Twitter into its Indonesian version. The aims of the research are to find out kinds of translation strategy that the translator uses and to find out the most dominant type of translation strategy. This research is analyzed by using theory of translation strategy by Chesterman and any other relevant theories. The result showed that the translation strategies found in terms in English version of Twitter and its translation are literal, calque, loan, paraphrase, naturalization, and unit shift. The most dominant strategy is literal translation with 33 data and its precentage are 44 percent. Keywords: Translation, Strategy, Terms

Abstract

The central unit of the language is the nominative meaning of the word, which has been thoroughly studied by the present time of the development of the linguistic science and had fundamental research in this area. However, the study of the nominative meaning of syntactic structures in recent years has also begun to be included in the research agenda, and today it has become a special syntactic problem. It is noteworthy that syntactic structures, in particular, the nominative character of the word, show that there is a significant difference between the nominative features of the word and a sentence. Firstly, a word is literally a nominative unit, and therefore maintains its status in the speech and in the vocabulary of the language. The sentence is temporal in this aspect. It can only express a real nominative meaning when used in speech. Secondly, the fact that the word is a nominative unity is also clearly seen in the context of the denotation, which is reflected in the form of a specific narrative expressed through it. In other words, the expression of the word (signifier) is a pure sign, and the expression of the statement is a sign that also comes in the status of a denotation. Thirdly, the word is often polysemantic, and the sentence is monosemantic. Fourthly, if the word is a nominative unit, then this is the case once in a lifetime.

Abstract

This study is an analysis of positive politeness strategies in Midnight in Paris movie by Woody Allen. The writer takes positive politeness strategies in a movie because the writer believes that people can learn pragmatics deeper through a movie and wants to see how the positive politeness strategies are employed in a movie through dialogues, since the writer also believes that understanding politeness is important. The aims of this study are to mention and describe the kinds of positive politeness strategies that are employed by the characters in Midnight in Paris movie and to explain the reasons that influence the characters to employ those strategies. This study uses qualitative method. The source of the data is taken from a Hollywood movie entitled Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen. The data is in the form of sentences which deal with utterances related to the positive politeness strategies. The data are utterances employed by the characters from the movie which indicate positive politeness strategies. The data are analyzed into kinds of positive politeness strategies. The writer finds that there are 13 positive politeness strategies in this movie from 50 data. Exaggerate (interest, approval, sympathy with H) strategy is the most dominant kind of positive politeness strategies employed by the characters in Midnight in Paris movie with 15 data, while both assert or presuppose knowledge of and concern for the hearer’s wants strategy and give gifts to H (goods, sympathy, understanding, cooperation) strategy are the lowest with only 1 datum of each strategy.

Abstract

Novel is one type of literary works. Novel as a fiction offers an imaginative world that is not much different with the reality. In process of writing, the authors use figurative language to convey the ideas. The use of appropriate figurative language will give the effect of aesthetic, so the readers will be more interested to know and imagine what the actual meaning from that figurative language which is conveyed. This research focuses on investigating the four kinds of figurative language, they are simile (clear and unclear similarity), hyperbole, personification and metaphor in the novel entitled If I Stay by Gayle Forman. The aims of this research are to find out the characteristics of simile (clear and unclear similarity), hyperbole, personification, and metaphor and to find out the most frequently figure of speech category used in If I Stay’s novel. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the figures of speech in the If I Stay’s novel. As the conclusion, clear similarity has characteristics like there are vehicle, tenor, connector (like, as such, etc), and contain the details of the similarity, while unclear similarity has characteristics which there are vehicle, tenor, connector (like, as such, etc), and do not contain the details of the similarity. Hyperbole has the characteristic that is overstatement or say something much bigger than the real. Personification has the characteristic that is human being or gives human attributes to nonhuman. The characteristics of metaphor which there are vehicle and tenor but there isn’t connector (like, as such, etc). From the four kinds of figures of speech are taken to be analysis, there are 169 times of figurative language occurrence, 74 times (44%) of simile, 72 times (43%) of hyperbole, 12 times ( 7%) of personification and  11 times ( 6%) of metaphor. The most dominant figurative language category used in this novel is simile.Keywords: Figurative Speech, Simile, Hyperbole, Personification, Metaphor.

Abstract

This is an annotated translation. The purposes of this research are to attain factual information concerning the problems faced by the researcher in the course of translating the source text and to find the solutions of the problems based on the relevant principles, strategies and theories of translation. The method used by the researcher to conduct this research are introspetive and retrospecive methods. The result of the research showed that the 4 chosen data to be analyzed used the following translation strategies: loan, calque, unit shift, and interpersonal change. The analysis of the data are based on the principles of translation and translation strategies. Abstract

Figurative language exists to depict a beauty of words and give a vivid description of implicit messages. It is used in many literary works since a long time ago, including in children literature. The aims of the research are to describe about kinds of figurative language often used in Cinderella, Rumpeltstiltskin, The Fisherman and His Wife and The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods By Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm and also give a description the conceptual meaning of figurative language used in Cinderella, Rumpeltstiltskin, The Fisherman and His Wife and The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods By Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. Abstract

This is a translation study related to translation shifts occurrence in the Indonesian translation of Novel Little Women written by Louisa May Alcott. The purposes of this study are to find out what types of category shifts found in the Indonesian translation of Little Women and to find out the dominant category shift found in the translation. The method which is used by the researcher is the combination of descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. The result of the research shows that all types of category shifts which are structure shift, class shift, unit shift and-system shifts, found in the translation. It also shows that the dominant category shift found in the translation is structure shift. Keywords: Translation, Translation shifts, Category shifts.

Abstract

The aims of the research are: (1) to find out types of modulation technique applied in the translation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, (2) to find out modulation techniques are most frequently used in the translation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The writer used descriptive analytical method in order to reach the aims of the research. The source of data is taken from a novel written by Jane Austen entitles Pride and Prejudice and its Indonesian translation by Berliani Mantili Nugrahani. The writer employs himself to collect data; by reading the novel and its translation, identifying the data, underlining and noting down, classifying, analyzing them based on theories of type of modulation translation technique. The findings of this research show that: from 92 data, the writer found 5 types of modulation technique, they are 72 negated contrary (78%), 14 abstract for concrete (15%), 3 interval to boundaries (4%), 2 term reversal (2%), 1 active to passive (1%). And the most frequently used of type of modulation technique is negated contary as many as 72 frequencies. Keywords: Translation, Translation Technique, Modulation

Abstract

This research is conducted to find out the conjunction usage within the students’ writing assignments of vocational state school. The aims of this research are to find out the common errors on the use of conjunction in their writing, investigate types of errors that occur most frequently in students’ writing proposed by Ong in Taxonomy Cohesion, and categorizing the causes of errors using the theory proposed by Richard. The research discussed about error analysis on the use of adversative (but), additive (and), and causal (because, so) in students’ writing. This research used the qualitative method and the data source comes from the tenth-grade students’ assignments. The result of this research shows that the common errors in the use of conjunction in students’ writing were a conjunction and, followed by but, so, and because. Furthermore, frequent types of error occurred in the text error of misuse is the most types of errors occur within the students’ writing assignments and then followed by the error of redundant repetition, omission, and unnecessary addition. There are three causes of errors, which are; incomplete application of rules, ignorance of rules restriction, and over-generalization. The errors of misuse and omission found out in the data, is most likely caused by the incomplete application of rules. The error of unnecessary addition and redundant repetition were caused by the ignorance of rules restriction and over-generalization.

Abstract

This is an annotated translation research. The problems of this research are (1) What are the problems encountered by the translator/ researcher during the process of translation; (2) What are the plausible solutions to the problems encountered by the translator/ researcher during the process of translation. The purposes of this research are (1) To attain factual information concerning the problems encountered by the translator/ researcher during the process of translating the source text into the target text, namely from English into Indonesian; (2) To present plausible solutions to the problem encountered by the translator/ researcher during the process of translation. The methods of this research are the introspective and retrospective method. The result of the analysis revealed that not all items of the principles of translation and not all of those strategies of translation were used for analysis. From the six items in the principle of translation, there are five principles of translation namely Meaning (5 data), Source Language Influence (2 data), Style and Clarity (5 data) Idiom (5 data) and register (3 data).  Of  each  strategies, namely syntactic strategies there are cohesion change (1 data), unit shift (2 data), loan (3 data), calque (2 data), and phrase structure change (1 data), of semantic strategies namely paraphrase (4 data), and of pragmatic strategies namely cultural filtering (2 data), Synonomy (1 data), and interpersonal change (4 data). The finding in this research revealed that an idiom in the target text is not used to translate an idiom in the source text. The idioms in this study are translated as non idiom in this research. Other finding is that there is no active target text which derived from passive source text what exist in the other way round. Another findings shows that the word I is translated into aku. I refers to the author in line with the conversation with herself in the context and when the author in line with the conversation with the reader in the context, the word I is translated into saya.The implications of this research are 1) The researcher/ translator should master the English language as well as the Indonesian language; 2) The researcher/ translator should master the theories of translation including the principle of translation and translation strategies as well as the theories of both languages; 3) The researcher/ translator should be competence in using application program, especially Microsoft Office; 4) Translator has no friends except dictionaries.  Key Words: Annotated, Translation, introspective, retrospective
